Pasting in my comments from STC; until Gamingforce's future is secure, I will be posting my comments there and mirroring them here. Also, I hereby dub this Week of the Silly Names.

Albert Odyssey Gaiden ~ Legend of Eldean - Main Theme 1 We've had Albert Odyssey tracks in SoTW before, and I remember being impressed by a track some time ago. I don't really like the oriental trappings in this track (esp. the violin), though the melody would probably be nice played on another instrument, and the lounge-ish background doesn't mesh with the main sound for me.

Fuujin Ryouiki Eretzvaju Original Soundtrack - A vision [Al] This piece had a vaguely familiar sound to it (Wild Arms, maybe?). It was decent all around, is flightly vanilla in all departments (Ministry of Melody, Bureaucracy of Beat, etc.).

Ganbare Goemon Mononoke Sugoroku (N64 Game Rip) - Deepsea Shrine We've had our share of Goemon tracks here at SoTW, that's for sure. This is pretty good for having N64 synth, though it does butcher one of the main instruments so badly it winds up sounding like a kazoo. The melody's okay, but the oriental touches again don't sit too well with me.

Gore Screaming Show Complete Sound Archives - SADISTIC SEXART 2006 I'm guessing this is a hentai title, though I can't imagine what would give me such a notion. Reminds me very much of the Perfect Cherry Blossom school of hyperactive composition, which is to say a lot of sound and fury with comparatively little content, melodic or otherwise.

Icewind Dale II Soundtrack - Heart of Winter Theme The first Soule we've had in SoTW for a while. I'm a well-known Soule Slut, of course, so I'm immidiately predisposed to like the tracks. I enjoy its interpolation of the original theme into a slower, more sweeping form, along with a nice performance of the main HoW theme (which, for my money, gets its best performance as a battle theme). It pales a bit in comparison to the superlative original Icewind theme, but is solid and enjoyable nonetheless.

Immortal 3 - Ork Color me surprised to hear the piano at the beginning, but the track shows its true colors soon enough, moving abruptly to a hard loop-based techno piece. It has too much melody to be properly trance, though I think it could have used more in that area for sure.

THE ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK ALBUM OF GIANT EGG ~ MUSIC POPPED OUT OF THE EGG - BANG! BANG! BIG HORNES EXPLOSION End the contest, close the polls. This is, bar none, the silliest track name ever to come up during SoTW's storied history. So silly, in fact, that it set up an unreasonable expectation in my mind for the track to come. It's really just a mundane big-band style piece with nothing but an energetic performance to distinguish it (though I will admit that the big band genre is somewhat overlooked here at SoTW).

Total Annihilation (Red Book Audio) - Brutal Battle This week's second helping of Soule. I'm far more familiar with this piece than the other this week, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't one of my all-time favorites. Energetic performance, terrific melody, piano interludes. I would never have nominated this (I'd have thought it was too popular), but since it's here I guess I'm wrong.

Not a bad week, though there are certainly some apples-to-oranges comparisons and rough spots.

How ya doing, buddy?

How does everyone feel about Uncharted Waters II tracks being eligible? As far as I know, only one song has ever been featured on GFF - that being Southern Twilight ~ Dance on a Cape of Good Hope. Now, that song won the Song of the Year contest, but still, only one song from UW II has ever appeared in SotW. Even with the SotY win, I wouldn't call UW II a very well-known/discussed album.

And don't say no just because you fear having a nom go up against a UW II song.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

I'm cool with Uncharted Waters stuff. It certainly fits the obscurity bill and it's not like much of it is poor.

Eh, this week didn't wholly impress me. Many tracks felt very generic. And I was once again reminded of why I can't stand Jeremy Soule's work.

I'm not feeling the comments this week. I'll let the point spread speak for itself.

3 Points: Immortal 3 - Ork
1 Point: THE ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK ALBUM OF GIANT EGG ~ MUSIC POPPED OUT OF THE EGG - BANG! BANG! BIG HORNES EXPLOSION
1 Point: Gore Screaming Show Complete Sound Archives - SADISTIC SEXART 2006
1 Point: Albert Odyssey Gaiden ~ Legend of Eldean - Main Theme 1

Actually being technical, ST ~ Dancing on a Cape of Good Hope was from the Unchart Waters 1 CD (tracks from that arranged disc were included on the UW2 Special Edition, which came out later on). Olive Wind or Wind Ahead has always crossed my mind as a potential nomination, but I figure that would make winning a gold TOO easy...

I was thinking of nominating something from Akira Yamaoka's iFuturelist, but then I noticed a lot of the tracks on that CD did a "fade-out one song while fading-in the next song" thing. It works nice when listening to the CD as a whole, but when listening to the track by itself, you end up with some weirdness at the start or end of the track that feels very out of place. If a song like that was put in SOTW, would it be possible to remove that out of place bit, assuming it cut off correctly? Or would the whole track have to go as is?

I listened through the tracks this week. Definitely a weird week for names. I'd say it was an okay week overall - not being a Soule fan kind of hurts my opinion of this week.

Heh, Wind Ahead is going to be one of my BSC noms.

I hear you on the "winning a gold would be TOO easy" part. It really is hard to choose from among the UW II songs, as they're all SO good! Much better quality stuff than 99% of vgm, I'd say.

If there aren't significant objections then, here's my next nom:

Album: Uncharted Waters II Special Edition
Artist: Yoko Kanno
Track Title: The Chase
Track #: 14
Catalog #: KECH-1061
Source: GMR
File Location: My hard drive
Comments: I also considered Catalina, but The Chase was always my first pick.

You know Uncharted Waters II Special Edition is arranged, right?

I mean, yeah, that album is ten kinds of awesome, but unless you've got a game rip, Wind Ahead would be ineligible.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Is there a not-arranged album of UW II music? I imagine it wouldn't have the same awesome sound quality as the arranged album. Unless the music really did sound that good in the game...

As far as I know, there's no OST of Uncharted Waters II. There are two OSTs for the first one, Koei Original BGM Collection Volume 4 ~ Uncharted Waters + Grade Up Version (I think this is the MSX version) and KOEI Original BGM Collection Vol.6 - Super Uncharted Waters / Pacific Theater of Operations (SNES version, and no one has this), which the sources of Southern Twilight ~ Dance on a Cape of Good Hope come from.

There are SPC and VGM sets for UWII, though. According to Wikipedia, there are PC, Saturn, and PS versions of the game as well, but I've never seen rips for those.

Oh, wow, I didn't realize they were such old games. If UW II has PC and PS1 versions, though, the music quality could still be solid.

My new goal is now to find a way to get the original music from UW II...

As for this week's tunes, they're nothing great, but nothing bad either. My votes will come in a few days, hopefully.

Legend of Eldean--The musical equivalent of getting drunk in China. It's not quite full of melody, and what is there isn't all that interesting. It's a cool mood setter, though, but I don't vote for those.

A vision--Even nifty guitars can't save a boring RPG battle song. I am so sick of those. They're such empty songs.

Deepsea Shrine--Flash player not working...click...and I recognize the themes. I played the game but never got to that spot in the game. Another Asian flavor song. At least the melody is good.

Sadistic Sexart--Best name, but is the song good? Sorta. Keyboard player from hell hashes that thing to death in a frenzy, yeah, that's cool. I guess.

Heart of Winter Theme--This is Soule when I hate his guts and I want to tell him to stay the fuck away from my Elder Scrolls. He just can't do RPG music. His remix on Overloaded even made Final Fantasy VI boring.

Ork--Okay, what's everybody voting for this week? Oh. Of course. Soulless techno. If TA loses to this song I will hurt somebody.

Bang Bang--What the hell?

Brutal Battle--And this is when I love Soule's work, because he can do RTS games! Honestly, it was his first work, and it all went downhill from there; this song is a great symphonic band piece and really has a lot of depth. Listen again...wheee!!! I love symphonic band music (and it's a live recording, too!).

Scores:
Brutal Battle: 3 points
Bang Bang: 1 point
Deepsea Shrine: 2 points

Albert Odyssey MT1 - Pretty, but boring.

A Vision - One of the tamer Eretzvaju tracks and not one I would have chosen, but the melody is still expressive and the background guitar/drums make up for the weak synth leads.

Sadistic Sexart - Mmm, I like this. Killer melody (for the most part), blazing harmonies, weak synth, but oh well. First track so far to make me take notice.

Deepsea Shrine - Take out the backbeat and this sounds like a Uematsu dungeon theme. At least until :52 anyway. Nothing too special here, really.

Ork - I stopped noticing this until about 1:40 in, at which point, I lost interst again about 10 seconds later. Why have such a great hook in the middle of the second instead of at the start, where this piece desperately needs it most?

Bang! Bang! - Thank you...You may have saved this week from being one of the blandest in recent memory. Sugar-based hyperactivity, but the great basslines and hummable jazzin' is downright refreshing. The length is more than justified.

Heart of Winter - Go to hell and melt.

Brutal Battle - One of the more expressive Soule pieces I've heard and one of the few that isn't his dreaded ambient theme. Nice brass lines here mostly and an occasional nice harmony, even if the whole is pretty random. I wouldn't vote for this over anything I really liked, but a surprising standout among this field.

3 pts - Bang! Bang!
1 pts - A Vision
1 pts - Brutal Battle
1 pts - Sexart

Here's another bland, wasted nomination from me! And it has "ithinkitsfunnyethnicjapanesesinging" vocals!!

* Album Title: Myst IV: Revelation (PC Game Rip)
* Artist: Jack Wall
* Track Title: Welcome
* Source: http://www.mobygames.com/game/window...lation/credits
* Disc Number: 1 (of 1)
* Track Number: 17
* Catalogue Number: NA
* Year: 2005

I'm sure it will receive a cold welcome! I'd be disappointed if it didn't. I might have gone with "Curtains" by Peter Gabriel from the game rip until I found out it was a highly obscure commercial single.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Voting early this week (for me, I mean), as I'll be away for a couple days and don't want to risk forgetting to vote Sunday evening.

Legend of Eldean
- See, this sounds nice, but I don't find it interesting at all. Certainly nothing I would remember.

A Vision - OK, this one sounded to me like something that should be playing during the initial castle sections of a 2D Castlevania game. It's solid, but nothing remarkable (note: I'm not connecting the "decent, but not remarkable" part to Castlevania.

Deepsea Shrine - This is actually a likable song. I came close to giving it a point.

SADISTIC - Can you say frantic? This track's crazy. Thankfully, it does a good job of communicating that sense of frantic craziness.

Heart of Winter - I like 0:43 and on.

Ork - Probably the highlight of the week. I like the nice piano intro. Then the synth comes in, and you know this is going to be a cool tune. Brings me back to the MOD era (if I had listened to video game music during the MOD era).

Bang! Bang! - This one's enjoyable, though not as much as it should have been. Could've done with more variety.

Brutal Battle - Orchestral pieces like this aren't my cup of tea, at least initially. If I listened to this like 15 times, I might end up enjoying it. I've probably listened to it 4 or 5 times, and I certainly can get into it a little bit more than I could at first.

It's funny, I didn't even like The Dalmasca Easterlands at first; it sounded like a bunch of random stuff to me. After repeated listens, though, I came around to it and ended up enjoying it.

The point spread was kind of tough this week. I felt like I wasn't accurately determining how much I liked each song. I think I ended up doing it based on how interesting/unique the songs were. There weren't really any bad songs this week, just that some stuck out more than others.

3 pts. - Ork
2 pts. - Sadistic
1 pt. - Bang! Bang!
Aww - Deepsea Shrine

Got the OST track, doesn't play twice through, Actually, I'll use the OST one because it sounds a bit crisper without hurting the song.
