After throwing all Square-Enix games out of the window, I've come to think it would be cool to hear the main theme from Kitakama Hakase no Yuuutsu at one of the concerts. Of course, no gamer identifies with that game and I'm not even sure if I got the game's title correct. Yet, it would sound awesome if it wasn't a midi because Project-μ who made this game went bankrupt and can't afford an orchestra anymore.

As for Stuttgart as a location. Well, as long as it's not too far in the east..
All 'gamers' (I'm not a gamer and I love these game music concerts) around Hamburg or Bremen will be angry at you now, Hamu-Sumo -- but Stuttgart..that's two hours by train, no obstacle.

Does Stuttgart have a Köln Arena?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Some music I would love to be played:

- Soul Calibur II
- Zelda ALTTP: Dark Overworld
- Donkey Kong Country: Coral Capers (water music)
- Black: Main Theme
- Skies of Arcadia: anything
- Shadow of the Colossus: Revived Power ~ Battle with the Colossus
- Headhunter: Jack's Theme

Anyway, Belgium has a higher percentage of gamers than Germany and that's an impressive thing considering that most of Germany's gamers are MMO-players (who wouldn't come to VGL I guess).

Thanks for the list.

We have Headhunter: Jack's Theme and are working on others on your list. It's tough when you can only do about 20 segments per night... we already have over 30 so something is always going to be left out. A good problem to have I guess! I enjoyed the score to Black as well and Chris Tilton and Michael Giancchino are good friends of mine.

Additional Spam:
All you guys making "I'd like to hear XXX game" posts - you might as well throw out any Square Enix games out the window as the rights to those are locked up tight (except KH).

But as for other games to add to the lineup, the lack of Metroid/Super Metroid is the most noticeable of all, considering it's part of Nintendo's holy triforce of franchises (especially since the other two, Mario and Zelda, are represented).

Actually, that isn't true at all. All of the current concerts including Video Games Live perform Final Fantasy music. I think you may be getting the "video" rights mixed up with the music rights. We can all play it... we just can't show any video.

Here is "One Winged Angel" the way we performed it last week in San Francisco. That's me on guitar with VertexGuy who does a KILLER version of Contra with us now. This was the first time we performed OWA with guitars... it's closer to the Advent Children/Voices version (without the rock drums and bass).

One Winged Angel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uopqwVYy0W8
Contra Jungle Jam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dsu4Tzgahoo

We do get asked for Metroid a lot but still haven't found a really good way to incorporate it into the show as of yet. Still trying though.

To all of the German folks out there...

It looks like we'll be doing multiple locations in Germany this year so hopefully everyone will be close to a show.

My mistake - thanks for clearing that up. I guess the rationale behind that is Square-Enix wants an edge with it's own concerts, while still allowing other venues to perform the actual music?

I find it ridiculous of Square withholding video rights like the concerts will spoil to the fans or something, HELLO! We're fans, we all seen the footage from Advent Children. Not to mention is advertising, not everyone at the concerts has seen everything on FF. There may be people still unaware of Advent Childre and may go get the DVD after the concert.

What have they got to lose by letting concerts use the videos? NOTHING! They get more out of it.

How ya doing, buddy?

Contra eh? (the old school part of me squeals with delight.) So uh...any thoughts about hitting up the midwest anytime soon?

More than great news! Thank you, Tommy!

Sad that Square Enix shows a defiant behaviour. What would I do for "Into the Thick of it", "What the Forest Taught Me" or "A Wish..." orchestrated...
Nevertheless there are (luckily) some other very good pieces of music:

- Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun - Lone Trooper (ok, nothing for orchestra but with choir on stage very nice)
- Golden Sun - The Elemental Stars (name based on "The Golden Sun Anthology" rip; that's a track perfectly made for orchestra. Probably very amazing be far from the GBA soundchip )
- Genso Suikoden II - Heart-Softening Theme
- Metroid Prime - Phendrana Drifts
- Tales of Symphonia - Far from our world
- TimeSplitters 2 - Siberia (my insider tip!)

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Hey, Tommy!

It was great meeting you at the GDC and VGL (and before the IGDA awards, haha! *stay away from the bathrooms*).

The GANG awards were great again, as usual - I recommend seeing this to anyone who is going to the Game Developers Conference. Have you put any thought into making recordings of some of the performances available to those who couldn't make it or would want to hear them again? The Guitar Heroes performance last year was nothing short of amazing!

Video Games Live in LA was also MUCH better than last year's performance at San Jose. I don't know if it was that the orchestra seemed happier to be performing the music or if it had to do with the smaller theater and better seating than I had last year. Of course, having a lot of important guests helps, but I think it would still have been fantastic even without Mr. Kondo there. I also enjoyed the better and different layout of songs this year, like Succession of Witches and especially the One Winged Angel - great performance to you, Kevin Kline, the orchestra, and choir! Definitely makes going to the concert again worth it. Of course, it's also great to hear Warcraft and Call of Duty again (not to mention Rygar in full orchestra! Nobody must recognize this game, but it's got such an amazing score, particularly from 1986!). I'll throw in another request for some Metroid music to the growing pile, while I'm at it (I know you'll think of some way to get it in there soon!). I'm very tempted to go again next year.

Oh, one question on the videogame footage from the history of game music piece. A lot of the footage shows the player losing the game. What was the design decision behind this selection of footage? Did it have something to do with the fact that we lost these games more often than we won them and so this is what we remember most, or that it deals with closure to the video clip?

Actually, I still have to upload the pictures I took at GANG and VGL, though I have already sent a few to Chris Kline (let's hope he can make it to more VGL's in the future!).

Also glad to see the Earthworm Jim Anthology soundtrack available on the Video Games Live website - I didn't have any cash on me, else I would have bought one! Looking forward to picking one up soon.

All the best,

Yo Everyone,

I'm super slammed right now preparing for our show this coming week in New Haven, CT at Yale. I'll try to get to everyone's comments and questions in a few days right before I leave.

Just wanted to quickly post this story/e-mail blast we just finished about the San Fran show that I thought some of you may be interested in because it has a lot of media, pics, videos, interviews, reviews, etc.

Thanks.

VIDEO GAMES LIVE TRIUMPHS IN SAN FRANCISCO!

KOJI KONDO DELIGHTS FANS AS NINTENDO GAME LEGEND SHIGERU MIYAMOTO AND OTHER GAMING LEGENDS ATTEND SPECTACULAR SOLD OUT PERFORMANCE

READ THE INCREDIBLE REVIEWS, SEE THE EXCLUSIVE PICTURES AND EXPERIENCE THE SPECIAL VIDEO CONTENT

Some audience members described it as “The greatest show I’ve ever seen!” others said “It was one of the best nights of my entire life!” Music4Games.net mentioned in their review that “VGL truly shined as the premier game music concert production on the circuit and demonstrated why, as host and co-creator Tommy Tallarico put it, video games have become the entertainment of choice in the 21st century.”

With all of the excitement and energy surrounding each performance it’s understandable why Video Games Live continues to astound sold out audiences around the world. Friday, March 9th, 2007 marked the return of Video Games Live as the closing ceremony of the Game Developers Conference held in San Francisco. The greatest video game names and legends of all-time were present to support what the industry is calling “the absolute best example of pushing video games forward as an artistic and culturally significant art-form.”

On hand was legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto - the most famous and biggest name in the world for gaming. Mr. Miyamoto is the creator of the most popular franchises and characters in video games including Mario, Zelda and many more. Other special guests included a rare public appearance by Alexey Pajitnov (creator of Tetris) who also took part in the post-show meet and greet with fans. In fact over 30 big name designers, composers and talent were present for the post-show activities. The complete list of special guests can be found here: http://videogameslive.com/index.php?s=sanfransisco

But the biggest entertainment of the evening was the presence and performance of celebrated video game composer Koji Kondo. Mr. Kondo performed a world premiere personal solo piano rendition of his music for Super Mario Bros. “It was utterly stunning”, said one reviewer “I was totally blown away and will probably never get another opportunity in my life to experience that. Thank-you VGL!” Mr. Kondo was also on hand to present the symphonic versions of his music from Mario and Zelda.

With so many special guests, performances, surprises and media coverage that were present we thought we would gather up as much information as we can and make it available to everyone.

Special thanks go out to our incredible sponsors at Intel, Dream Authentics, Ex’pressions College, ASCAP, Advanced Media Network, the Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA), Sega, the NARAS/Grammy’s P&E Wing, Music4Games.net & 1UP.com.

Final Fantasy & Metal Gear Rehearsals
http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/10187

We’re all big fans of YouTube and love it when fans help to spread the word by posting videos for everyone else to view. Because the concept of our show is so unique, we find that our biggest challenge is raising awareness for what a show experience is like. Through the spreading of personal videos on the internet we find that more people start to get a better idea of some of the unique elements we use. We had a lot of very special performances for the San Francisco show that others may never get a chance to see and we always try to make each and every show a little unique. Although the quality isn’t always the best we still enjoy some of the fan made videos that get posted. Here are some of our favorites from the San Francisco show.

QUOTES

“This night VGL truly shined as the premier game music concert production on the circuit and demonstrated why, as host and co-creator Tommy Tallarico put it, video games have become the entertainment of choice in the 21st century.”
Greg O’Connor-Read, Music4Games.net

“If you haven’t seen VGL, it is a phenomenal experience. The arrangements are superb, every video is literally spot on with the music, and the audience interaction creates a fun and exciting environment that is completely unlike any concert you’ve ever seen before.”

“That was the most fun I've had at a concert in my life.”

“Video Games Live concert on Friday night was utterly stunning. I had no idea what to expect and I was totally blown away. They really have something awesome going there, and I’ve been raving about it ever since it ended.”

“Words can’t describe it. I saw something truly fantastic.”

“The crowd’s ecstatic reception was reminiscent of Nobuo Uematsu’s triumphant entrance during the Dear Friends concert at Walt Disney concert hall nearly 3 years ago but VGL even managed to beat that since Mr. Kondo performed a brilliant rendition of his Mario Bros. theme on solo piano that showcased exactly why so many fans champion memorable game music over generic Hollywood-type scores.”

“And the cherry on the cake was the attendance of Shigeru Miyamoto in the audience to celebrate Mr. Kondo’s musical works.”

“For those who witnessed the occasion in all its majesty, it was one of those rock n’ roll tribute moments that for game music fans could be comparable to that of Queen’s standout performance at Live Aid.”

“Last night I saw the best symphony show I've ever seen.”

“This VGL show was simply astounding, incredible, and so impactful...I was sitting there the whole time thinking about how amazing VGL is... it is doing so much to bring the industry to the masses, and was so uniting and exhilarating...it was like a big "family" out there in the audience, and when everyone pulled out their DS's and cellphones...wow! What a superb job, and I can't think of anyone who could pull this off the way Jack & Tommy have done with so much integrity, fun, and sense of dedication. Bravo! (man, we all got goosebumps when Koji played his own music on the piano...I felt like I was apart of a historic event).”

“I realized we were witnessing something special. The way the lights flickered and the chorus hummed before the beginning of each song, it was awe-inspiring.”

“When it all ended, my palms hurt from all the clapping. My feet were tired from the many standing ovations that were given (and rightfully so) by the end of the night. I appreciated it all and can’t wait for another opportunity to view it and listen to it again. Thanks, Tommy and everyone who put together Video Games Live. Not only did it remind me how vividly I remember the music from the games I grew up with, but it reminded me just how beautiful the artform of gaming truly is.”

“It was absolutely amazing! The best concert I've ever been to!”

“Video Games Live! The best show ever!”

“Simply Amazing! What a great performance! Only at VGL can an orchestra be described as kicking ass.”

“Video Games Live rocked my socks off.”

“The concert was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.”

VIDEO GAMES LIVE PERFORMING AT YALE UNIVERSITY WITH SPECIAL GAME INDUSTRY GUESTS, PANELS, PERFORMANCES AND PRE-SHOW FESTIVAL

Esteemed Ivy League University to Host Historic First Collegiate Concert and Open-Public Educational Industry Panel

Special Performances to Include Video Game Pianist Martin Leung Performing an Exclusive Castlevania Arrangement on 104 Year Old Yale Pipe Organ

New Haven, Conn. — Following sold-out shows around the world, Video Games Live will perform in Yale University’s Woolsey Hall, corner of College and Grove streets, on March 31st at 8 p.m. Video Games Live is a multi-media event celebrating the music of video games. Music will be performed by the Yale Symphony Orchestra and a full choir, synchronized with video footage, lighting, solo performers, electronic percussion, live action and interactive segments that create an explosive entertainment experience. This groundbreaking historic performance will be the first time symphonic video game music has ever been presented with a university.

Special events surrounding the show include a video game industry educational panel to take place on the Yale Campus the day before the concert – Friday, March 30th. This special panel event is open-to-the-public and there is no charge. The panel entitled “Video Games – Past, Present & Future” will consist of industry veterans Seamus Blackley (XBOX creator, game designer, CAA), Lorne Lanning (OddWorld Inhabitants), Hal Halprin (IEMA, ECA) as well as Video Games Live creators and industry composers Tommy Tallarico (Earthworm Jim, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Metroid Prime) and Jack Wall (Myst III, Myst IV, Jade Empire, Mass Effect). The event will take place in Sudler Hall on the Yale University Campus from 3:00PM to 5:00PM.

On Saturday, March 31st there will be a special pre-show festival taking place in the 7,000 sq ft. Commons Dining Hall on the Yale Campus. The pre-show festival will consist of the ever popular Costume Contest as well as playable games, interactive music demos by Cakewalk, Intel computers, Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) info booth and a variety of game competitions including Guitar Hero II and Halo 2 being hosted by Connecticon. The pre-show festival will take place between 6:00PM – 8:00PM.

In keeping with the tradition of making each and every show unique, Video Games Live has put together a special Castlevania arrangement which will be performed by the Video Game Pianist - Martin Leung on a 104 year old 3-story Newberry pipe organ. The organ has been in Woolsey Hall since 1903 with the hall itself being built in 1901 (image of pipe organ). Other special performers include original Civilization IV solo vocalist Ron Ragin of the Talisman African Choir who will be reprising his amazing vocals for the exclusive Civilization IV segment. Aside from the extraordinary line-up of game industry luminaries and performers, also on hand for the post-show meet and greet will be video game composer Tom Salta whose soundtracks for games such as Red Steel, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 & 2 and Need for Speed Underground have gained him critical acclaim.

“It’s a dream come true to be performing with the Yale Symphony,” said leading game composer and Video Games Live co-creator Tommy Tallarico. “What an amazing privilege and honor for the video game industry to be a part of such a historical and prestigious establishment.”

Brian Robinson, Yale Symphony managing director says, “The excitement level among the student musicians has been overwhelming. There is a real connection to this music that is helping to introduce a whole new generation of people to a symphonic performance.” He added, “When you walk in, you will not recognize Woolsey Hall. You'll see lighting trusses, giant screens, an extended stage, etc. As far as special effects, it will be something Woolsey has not had in a long time."

Ticket prices range from $15 to $35. Tickets are available online at: Shubert Theater - CAPA Ticketing

Daaamn. Friday? I wish I'd known about this a few weeks back, I could have arranged my plans so that I'd be there on Friday. Too late now. What is this going to be about? I might have to change my plans anyways.

Will Seamus Blackley be around on Saturday as well? He's someone who I would love to meet.

I met Martin Leung last E3. Cool guy. He played the Dark Overworld theme from Lttp for me.

After Asteroids is Missle Command.
After Joust is Satan's Hollow which is where that classical music that we play (Ride of the Valkyries) was originally part of.

As much as I hate to sound lame, I've gotta say it.

You're a fantastic promoter of this event, Tommy. I'm a Classically Trained Violist, and it's interesting to me that occasionally there are debates and discussions around the school of music here about current repertoire, concert etiquette in this day and age, etc. Not to mention the apocalyptical comments that Symphony Orchestras are dying and will become a thing of the past within 30 years because of the "Orchestra audience" dying off. I think what you're doing is fantastic for not only Video Games, but it's fantastic for those who are looking to go into music and Music Education/Performance/Composition (me) that there is something going on right now that can invigorate a love for going to hear some of the world's greatest orchestras, greatest instruments, greatest stages over many of the other possible things -- and not only that, but it's doing it for kids ages 8-18 moreso than those over 50. Countless people will admit to wanting to play the piano because of such tunes as Aerith's Theme or To Zanarkand, and through the Piano lessons or perhaps simply online forums (The Concert Hall, for example), learn to have a love of music and beauty. This is what music is all about, and I thank you for continuing with this project to its fullest extent.

I have a doubt about the God of War medley of Video Games Live. The suite of the show, called "Revenge and Redemption", include the tracks "The Great Sword Bridge of Athena" and "The Vengeful Spartan". So, the arrangement of "Revenge and Redemption" is exactly the same of "God of War II - Main Titles" of God of War II OST, isn't it?

I find it ridiculous of Square withholding video rights like the concerts will spoil to the fans or something, HELLO! We're fans, we all seen the footage from Advent Children. Not to mention is advertising, not everyone at the concerts has seen everything on FF. There may be people still unaware of Advent Childre and may go get the DVD after the concert.

What have they got to lose by letting concerts use the videos? NOTHING! They get more out of it.
I feel the same way but it is not usually SE that is fussy about rights. It is the artists themselves like NomuTetsu who go complaining that their work is used without permission. Fair enough.

We all have our reasons and sure, SE is not doing us any fan service and I too is very disappointed but hey, when you go to VGM concerts, it's about the music, never the visuals. Close your eyes and listen. You'll see memorable images from the games you love.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Well, I see that the listing for "NYC" has been moved up
from the bottom of the "TBA" list to the top of "TBA." I'm
now confident I won't qualify for AARP membership before
the show comes here. My compliments.
