SLOW Shut/Rebooting

Heya,

My computer's been acting weird... it's taking AGES to shut down or reboot

Anywayz, I used Spybot with updates and Add-Aware nothing.... the only thing as far as I can tell that I installed is Trend Micro virus scan (trial).... according to that no viruses either

I have win xp and am using a HP Media Center m700 Desktop PC series - could provide more info if needed

Level 1: Disk Cleanup and Defragment

1. Clear cache files in Internet Explorer/Firefox and Windows/Temp files.
2. Run Disk Defrag (Start -> Run -> dfrg.msc) on your hard drives.

Level 2: UPHClean

1. Download and install Microsoft's User Profile Hive Cleaner (validation required). It's supposed to expedite shutdowns and reboots, barring any problems turned up in the previous steps.

Level 3: Deeper Diagnostics

1. Run Event Viewer (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc)
   • Post screenshots.
   • I'm interested only in Application and System logs that are marked as Warnings (Yellow) or Errors (Red).
2. Run System Configuration Utility (Start -> Run -> msconfig)
   • Post screenshots of Services and Startup tabs.
   • You may choose to Hide all Microsoft Services.
3. Run Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL)
   • Post screenshot of processes tab.

Level 4: Pending Event Log Diagnostics

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Seems like your hard-drive set itself to PIO mode.

He's talking about your Disk access mode. Start Device Manager, expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, and look at the advanced settings on your Primary and Secondary IDE Channels. If any of them are set to "PIO" mode, delete the channels and reboot.

I'm curious about utorrent_1.5.exe on your Processes list. Normally the file would just be "utorrent.exe". Is this legit?

Services:
Nothing untoward as far as I can see.

Application Logs:
You have a boatload of 453 and 454 errors. Microsoft Technet says it's related to your antivirus scanner. Curious, since it seems you had this problem before installing those progs.

Try this solution first and see if it helps. If not, try uninstalling Trend Antivirus and install another program. I use Symantec Corporate Edition, but I understand Gamingforce people love NOD32.

If this doesn't help, I would like a more detailed look at your event logs. Save the log as an .EVT file instead of .TXT, and attach it here.

Hard Disk Modes:
Please recheck the primary and secondary channels. Be sure that even if the selectable option says "Auto" or "DMA if available", the current (and non-changeable Transfer Mode does not say PIO only.

Other Troubleshooting:
This will take some time. On command prompt, run "chkdsk c: /f /r". On your next reboot, let chkdsk run to completion and take note of bad sectors or errors, if any.

Honestly, no idea - that's what I originally thought... but it's been like that before the problem started so I doubt it may have to do directly with the problem (though I'm not sure why it does show up like that)

Actually I had the problem after I installed Trend Micro - was the only program I installed after the problem started... I'm gonna reinstall it now (but it needs reboot - can't do that now 'cause I'm downloading stuff from mirc.... so I'll see if that makes a difference later) - anywayz I will attach a .evt log

K re-checked again and made sure none of the Transfer Modes say "PIO only"

1. You have recurring Event 453 and 454 errors. Try deleting the entire C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore directory, and see if it helps. (To be safe, rename it to something like DataStore-old instead of deleting.)

System Logs:

1. You have recurring Event 10010 DCOM problems - are you up-to-date on all Windows Update patches?
2. You have a few Event 1003 problems which may be indicative of faulty hardware (esp. RAM).

it's probably the new virus scanner you installed. The virus scanner will be fine on the majority of PC's but you're probably just one of the unlucky ones. I have PCTools Spyware Doctor installed and when I allow it to run actively like a virus scanner my computer starts up really really slow and shuts down really really slow. Maybe it's trying to perform a task at startup that interferes with the initiation of other programs or Windows. I had the same issue with Zonealarm for a while during the 6 series.

Sry for the late responses - I'm going through Finals week now - so I just usually pop on the computer for a few minutes and run off

Anyways...

-Uninstalled the virus scans
-Renamed the folder
-Updated to the latest update from Microsoft

Now it is FASTER - but still not as it was before I had the virus scan.... so I suppose this is much better and thanks ^^
