Star Wars the TV series?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4808746.stm

Interesting... Says it would cover Luke Skywalker's life growing up. This will either be a smash hit or utter tripe.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Bah, I'd rather watch how Han and Chewie met. That would be awesome.

Call me a fanboy, but I'll look forward to this. If it ends up half as good a Smallville did in regards to Superman, I'll be sure to watch it every week...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

How could this be exciting? Luke grew up in the middle of the desert on Tatooine, fairly isolated from anything else. When he met Obi Wan, he acted like he hadn't even been to Mos Eisley before, so how can he have much interaction with anything?

In order for a series to be even halfway interesting, they'd have to spice it up and further screw with the series' already shattered continuity. If I never see another Star Wars film or TV spinoff, it'll be too soon.

This comic pretty much sums up my feelings: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/04/27

"but im pregnant with his imperial child!"

I will seriously kill myself if i hear a line similar to that in the tv show. The comic is hilarious though.

If it's as good as the Clone Wars cartoons were, I'd be up for watching it. Though I do admit that I have a bit of trouble imagining that kind of action out in the middle of nowhere on Tatooine, too. Guess I'll just have to wait and see how Lucas is gonna milk this one.

I don't know how they're going to pull it off. I for one will be disappointed if the production values are any less than the films'. I see a lot of half-assedly choreographed lightsaber fights and poorly CGed space battles unless they want to invest a lot of money in every episode.

How strange - thats not at all what was stated.

Of all the ideas around which to base a Star Wars TV series, Lucas sure picked the worst one possible. In order for a series to be able to carry itself, interesting and exciting things have to happen, and it's quite clear that Luke's formitive years were anything but. He spends his days on a barren desert planet farming water. I rather doubt he'd be all eager to run off and join the Rebellion, fly spaceships, and become a Jedi if things were actually interesting back home.

The betting pool is officially open. How many episodes in do you think they'll go before Chewbacca makes a guest appearance?

I'd be willing to bet its more likely to be what McCallum stated, not about Luke Skywalker growing up. Of course there will always be skeptics...(on the internet everyone looks foward to something...then when it comes out..they bash the hell out it).

Id bet anything once this comes out and features new characters and has pretty nothing to do with any of the original characters...people will complain "wheres darth vader...wheres obi wan?...this show sucks! im going to watch my One Tree Hill DVDs"!

So what we'll probably end up with is some good ideas with some poor execution. Only this is related to Star Wars so people will actually care. For a little while.

Well, the Cartoon Series was fairly well done. I rather though this be about Skywalker AFTER Episode VI...as there is more interest in that...

What McCallum stated has been the description of the series since it was originally announced. This statement from the BCC is the black sheep, not the other way around.

I think it would be better if a TV series about Star Wars was based around the Old Republic or the time after the original movies. If there's going to be no more movies then that leaves a whole area after 4 5 and 6 to be used.

Well - keep in mind that anything Expanded Universe is *not* offical. Is it canonized? Yes - but only so far as that writers and comic book companies won't be sued by Lucasfilm and it's subsidaries. EU is tolerated only in the sense that it won't conflict with the movies, their novelizations or the radio dramas.

Well yeah.. I just dont see how watching Luke grow up could be interesting at all as a TV show. Unless they're going to concentrate on other portions of the Star Wars universe. Like the Empire growing.. which would be interesting to watch.

While I realize it isn't official.. the content on the Old Republic is pretty enjoyable. Alot more enjoyable than luke growing up in a desert. There's alot of it too. Plenty to be used in a TV show. Maybe using the Old republic wouldn't really work.. I just think it would be better to watch. Ah well.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I agree on that point - but so far only this BBC article has mentioned that idea. Various mentions by producer Rick McCallum have told us that the show will involve new characters somehow involved with, chased by or are in actuality bounty hunters.

Well, be careful what you wish for. There is a LOT of EU that is exceedingly horrible enough to make you bleed puss from your eyes.

God forbid Lucas do what he wants to with the worlds and characters that he created.
