That Supernova attack did look pretty impressive but when it eventually hit, it didn't really do much damage at all. I even had him throw two of them at me one time, and he still didn't manage to kill me with them.
supernova can't kill you it's just reduce your hp and do some status effect, I think it act like a demi spell...

Obviously NeoBelhelmel and I are the only ones who remember in FFVIII:
Spoiler:

Ultimecia's Grand Cross attack.

She chains two planets to her hands with lightning and then frigging slams them on you. Those planets should have decimated her, her castle, and everything in it. However, you're merely left with a couple of status effects or something equally unimpressive as a result of that galactic attack.

FFX's Magus Sisters unleash a giant burst of energy with their Delta attack for 99999. All those theatrics are unnecessary when you see that Sandy's Razzia will eventually just do 99999 also. Heck, Cindy's Passado fires needles from her ass and they add up to more 99999! Luckily non of these decimate the surrounding area.

Of course, Ark and Eden get honourable mentions again. Fancy red laser outer space giant mecha show from Ark that amounts to a simple sword swipe from Steiner...honestly! You summon the "garden of Eden" and it breathes on the enemy for massive dmg. Limit breaking with a Lionheart does exponentially more than summoning this legendary guardian force.

I also like Bahamut Zero's Tera Flare. Looks like everything involving cosmic attacks is hilariously overdone. The names are even cool, and then you laugh at the untouched surroundings after the dragon creates a meterorific crater that instantly heals itself over afterwards.

Just reminded me of this popularly cited cliche list. Forgot which rule number it was:

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

You know, how much did Squall's Lionheart dish out? I've only been able to activate it twice when I was playing. Once on Bahamut and then again on the Ultima weapon. I'm guessing it was at least 20 some odd strikes for 9999 damage - so that's shy of 200,000 damage - not that bad.

You're right. I was a bit off on my guess earlier in the thread -- it does 15/16 of your current HP (a little short of 94%). So it can never actually kill you, although the status effects can wipe you out shortly after it if you're not prepared for some reason.

What about FFVIII's "Brothers" summon? That was pointless. They can rip apart the earth, throw it all around, land on the enemy--which doesn't feel a damn thing--yet....the planet is perfectly normal....

Since we're rabidly making fun of FF7, I'll throw in the summon for Alexander. Earth splits apart, huge mega giant robot comes out and rests itself on its laurels and KA-BLAM!

500 HP damage.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I think this thread needs some non-FF examples.

Planescape: Torment always comes to mind when thinking of things like this. There was a spell called "Mechanus' Cannon" which incolved a cutscene where an enormous cannon at the heart of a mechanical world and manned by a crew of a half-dozen robots unfolded and fired directly into an open portal. Net result? A tiny splash on each on-screen enemy and enough damage to maybe *maybe* break into triple digits.

There was another one which you could use only once, a meteor strike that may or may not have been influenced by FFVII. There was a lengthy CGI of a rock being pulled out of space, which then cut to another brief splash and less than 100 damage. That meteor spell was particularly useless in that it was a well-hidden item that had only one use yet took up a ton of disc space thanks to the overblown animation.

Rogue Galaxy. The Supernova tag team attack has all three zooshing through the sky, they touch weapons and a glyph forms. Then it fires straight through the planet, reducing it to little more than pretty light and pebbles.

...then you get back, the enemies croak and you gain the weapon experience you fiend for.

It actually does a shitload of damage, especially after your characters get their damage boost revelations, but I'd expect the planet to be history.

Yeah, true. I only know that because my friend that's a huge FFVIII fan decided to point that out to be comparing it to the "inferiority" of Cloud's Omnislash which only hits 15 times.

Squall is better than Cloud because he doesn't have to spend 70 minutes each morning making his hair spikey again. Instead he just reads emo monologues to himself and expects people to understand his thought bubbles.

I suppose it's all just an extension of the usual video game mechanic of you being far tougher to kill than you look. Snake, for example, can survive being shot a dozen times and bisected with Metal Gear's laser. Leon Kennedy can tread on a mine and recuperate almost instantly with the suspicious herbs that Capcom love so much. And I know Dante's a demon, but he has a incredible healing rate that being hit with a fireball just knocks him back a little bit.

Ok, so with SuperNova, I took it that the whole "Death of the universe" thing was a complete mindfuck (litterly, Sephiroth was screwing around with thier minds) as apposed to litterly him METEROing the hell out of your party.

Cause, frankly, if he could of done that in the first place, it would of been a hell of a short Game, Final Fantasy VII.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

The Aeons in Final Fantasy X and four of my characters managed to deal 99,999 damage at one point. After seeing that one attack from a character was enough to do that, I stopped using Aeons entirely. Most of the Aeons' special attacks in the beginning of the game seemed too long and flashy so it seemed pointless when I no longer needed them.

Indeed, what are Sister Ray and all the Ruby, Omega, Ultima, and Emerald Weapons again when they're floating out in space debris. Where would Sephiroth live then.

:: Damn, I now I miss cloud, and I miss solid ground. I guess I should be more careful with supernova. ::
