I had a rockin' track planned for my next nom, but the Best Chiptune Contest's had me in a bleepity-bloop mood lately.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows - Unknown 14 Mmm, this sort of choral music melts me like butter every single time. Nothing like a moody piano solo or melancholy child soprano, and combining them makes an intoxicating brew. The bell part that appears halfway in is enchanting too.
Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter My nom. I'm a big Ryuji Sasai fan, and I feel that the criminally underappriciated Rudra OST shows him at his best--a superior melodist who's adept at producing high-energy rock tracks that don't give themselves over to mindless repetition or noodling. Every character in Rudra gets a theme, and an uptempo rock version of their theme accompanies the toughest boss battles. In this case, Sion's grand, martial theme gets the treatment, and the result is one of my personal Sasai favorites. The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (PC Game Rip) - Winter 1 There's a certain period in PC gaming when MIDI ruled the roost, and songs from that era tend to sound much cheaper and tinnier than their console counterparts. I was surprised to find that Winter was so full as a result; it's got a good melody and good "seasonal" development. It ends like a locomotive hitting a brick wall, though--would a looped version have been too much to ask? Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? DH unveils his 9th SoTW winner. I enjoy the saxaphone that gets a prominent part in the song, and it has a pleasing big band sound all around. Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman I've been nothing if not harsh to every Phoenix Wright track that's popped up in SoTW or the BSC, mostly because they were by and large vaulted onto the stage on the back of the incredibly popular game. This track, however, has more substance and variation than the others. It is jam-packed with the orientalisms and iffy orchestration that infest so much Japanese orchestrated VGM, but that's to be expected. Ape Escape 3 (Game Rip) - Wintersville Definitely has the "winter" sound down with the airy instrument set and twinkling chimes. It's too bad the sound design is so poor, putting the dull techno loops front and center while almost burying the attractive woodwind melody. Space Invaders '91 (Game Rip) - Rounds 2, 11, 14 Chiptunage. So, did anybody know about the Best Chiptune Contest, despite the prominently-displayed pimpage at the top of the last few threads? Anybody? Anyway, this track does quite a bit with its limited soundset--I shudder to think what it would have been like if Iwadare had been able to cheese it up like he wanted to. Still, pleasing and satisfying, and probably would have done well in the BCC. Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 And now we've got the intentionally synthy as a counterpoint. Reminds me a bit of Phantasy Star, particularly in the woodwind-ish samples, though not nearly as strong as the best tracks of those ilk. The melodies are pretty good, though, and the track has lots of spunk. This will be a very interesting round--since the shuffle, a bunch of SoTW's most frequent posters and participants have been thrown together. Will everyone pimp their nomination, with first place being a function of who comes in second the most? Either way, I don't think I'll be looking at another SoTW gold medal until the next shuffle ![]() The Point Spread Rudra - 3 pts. Seven Sorrows - 1 pt. Daggerfall - 1 pt. Mushihimshihihihimshihimshimimishiesama - 1 pt. Just missed: Spaced Invaders This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
Happy New Year, everyone. Great way to start 2007 with a selection of great songs this week. Since I can find the time now, think I better start getting those votes in. But this is admittedly a really tough week...
(2 points) The Elder Scrolls - Daggerfall (PC Game Rip) - Winter 1 I was kind of hyped about this RPG when it came out, after being wowed by an hour or two of the first game in the series, Arena. But Daggerfall's labyrinthine, multi-level, trap-filled dungeons were such a turn-off I sort of gave up on the game. :P However, one thing I did enjoy was the in-game music. "Winter1" is an arrangement of the main theme you hear in Arena (easily one of my favourite pieces of game music). It has a great melody with a strong quality of adventure. This particualr arrangement manages to incorporate the usual winter trappings in an admirably coherent and effective way. The second half with the strong string lines especially bring to mind strong, bitterly cold winds beating on a lone adventurer trudging through the streets of a grimey walled town. Fantastic. (1 point) Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 Arranged And when I just thought this week couldn't get any tougher along comes Mushihimesama... This particular arrangement is somewhat less synthy than the original but retains the same infectious quality, thanks to an incredibly catchy, uplifting melody. Very, very nice. (1 point) Gauntlet - Seven Sorrows (Game Rip) - Unknown 14 I always thought the music (at least a number of selections) was one of the saving graces of this particularly disappointing Gauntlet instalment and this track is certainly one of the better ones. It's a very beautiful and haunting choral piece that sends the occasional shiver down the spine. The music box bits are suitably eerie and full of disqueitude. Great pity this track didn't appear to be used in the game. (1 point) Ape Escape 3 (Game Rip) - Wintersville Oh, another winter song. Very neat. I like the nice mix of instruments used in this piece. The lovely flute/wind melody worked very well with the pleasant guitar strums, and the techno-ish beats add some interesting variety to the song. (1 point) Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished This is one prettty nifty song. The trumpets, saxophone and piano solos are a real treat and, further more, work surprisingly well together. Much credit to the really groovy percussion. And the rest... Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter I really quite like the upbeat quality of this track, thanks to some great percussion. I imagine this to be a battle theme? The melody is appropriately purposeful and urgent. Very close to getting a point. Space Invaders '91 (Game Rip) - Rounds 2, 11, 14 Interesting chip-tune. It has some really cool sections though I always hoped that it could go a step further like developing the bit from 0:52 to 0:57. Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman To be honest, this is a pretty good song. It has a nice Japanese 80s quality to it and develops very nicely. But I must admit it's not quite as infectious and dramatic as I'd hoped given the strong competition this week. Still, it's definitely a song I'd likely give points to in other weeks. Feeling a bit nostalgic so I'm going with another old PC RPG nomination (I really should get down to playing Ultima IV, V and VI someday ![]() * Album Title: Ultima VI: The False Prophet (Game Rip) * Artist: Kenneth W. My week is going to be busy from tomorrow on, and I've just taken a sedative, so my time is limited. I'm just going to administer points.
2 Points: Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman 2 Points: Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? 2 Points: Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 No track was poor but these three caught my ear best. I like my stuff layered and upbeat. I was speaking idiomatically. ![]() |
Just a note: The Gauntlet and Ape Escape tracks' tags were messed up (Artist and Album wouldn't display), at least for me. They should now be fine.
And not a big deal, but the week #s in the first post should be corrected. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Gauntlet: (1 point) A very atmospheric track, but kind of too slow paced. It doesn't really do anything, and it unsuited to non-game listening. A very good game track, though. Very creepy and delightful.
Rudra: Every week has to have another generic RPG battle song, and I think this one is it. It's nothing new and brings nothing to the front, much less quality of the track. Daggerfall: (1 point) A nice Winter track, though the Elder Scroll series went on to do much better. It's too...uh...maybe, boring. I don't know, there's something about it. Baseball Team: (2 points) A very nice jazz song that I wasn't expecting from such an odd title. It is a bit redundant in some parts but succeeds overall. It overstays its welcome, though. Gyakuten: (2 points) Very nice orchestrated piece, and if the music is like that AT ALL in the game I will be very pleased. It's on my "to buy" list. Ape Escape: Another environmental song. This one is very slow, but very nice and lifting, and although I am not giving it any points, I'm downloading this one. Space Invaders: Uhhh...sometimes I like chiptunes. Not this time. Mushihimesama: If only it was as interesting as its title. It feels synth but not in a cool way, more of a preppy way. That doesn't rub me the right way. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
It turns out that today is opposite day, so all of what you have said is true, so you should probably just go.

Whoa, hold on now, don't everybody vote at once. Is it possible 3/4 of the voting group is still hung over from New Year's?
Now, onto the voting quickly. No clear winner this year, but decent quality all-around. Have to say, I'm a bit shocked we haven't seen more activity on the week seeing as how it's across the board great. I'm going to have to think about my point spread here, placeholder post until then.
Ape Escape 3 (Game Rip) - Wintersville Not melodically strong, a certain aspect of it remind me of some recent past nominations of mine, namely the constant repetition always on the forefront. It should come as no surprise that I find it wonderful. Builds up nicely, though simply. An ear catching start to the week. Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows - Unknown 14 I can appreciate the elegance, but the problem is I find myself appreciating the piece slightly more than genuinely liking it. I'm glad Unknown 14 is as sparse as it is, I think the mood would of been broken if a they couldn't restrain themselves from a full orchestra bursting in in attempts to ramp things up for some sort of epic ending. Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman Every single piece of music I've heard from this game, arranged or not, tells me that you really had to have played it to be fond of the score. This is generic oriental style done well, but nothing more. Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? Given the nomination's association with baseball, it would be appropriate for me to say that DH's jazzy noms are hit and miss for me. Forty Year Plan's an opposite field down the line triple that drives in two runs. There's strong competitors on the week, however, so we'll see what happens. Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 This has a cotton candy fluff factor making it a lot of fun to listen to, and that's in addition to a quality melody. Shinju probably could of stood for a bit more fleshing out, but as it is, still an attractive track. Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter Lufia-esque. I'm not the best about remembering composer names, but I'd bet :10bux: it's the same guy. Strange Encounter's a little toe tapping but only reaches the level of sightly past serviceable. Space Invaders '91 (Game Rip) - Rounds 2, 11, 14 Sweet little chiptune mainly due to the nice rhythm. Hard to tell whether or not how easy it is to like will nudge its way into points. One of those entries that has that effect while listening to it, fades pretty quickly soon after ending. The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (PC Game Rip) - Winter 1 What's there is neither bad or enough. Ends while it's still getting started. Point Spread: 2 points - Ape Escape 3 (Game Rip) - Wintersville 2 points - Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? 1 point - Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 1 point - Space Invaders '91 (Game Rip) - Rounds 2, 11, 14 Just missed - Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows - Unknown 14 How ya doing, buddy? ![]() so they may learn the glorious craft of acting from the dear leader

The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (PC Game Rip) - Winter 1 : I like the song, reminds me of an FFVII town theme (maybe because of the instruments?) The ending is kind of abrupt, I guess it's meant to loop forever, until the player zoned. I guess it is a game rip, so you can't change much about that (if it was an OST of some sort I would be puzzled). Mediocre song. Won't get points from me this week though.
Space Invaders '91 (Game Rip) - Rounds 2, 11, 14 :Wait, a Space Invaders game with music?! and from 1991! Anyways, cool song. I haven't listened to this kind of music for a while, it's refreshing actually. But, sad to say, it just doesn't 'stand out' (I don't like that phrase I think...) as much as the other songs. Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter : Is it just me or is this extremely similar to the Dark World Theme from the Zelda on the SNES. Hmmm, maybe not, can't remember exactly. The music style is always fun to listen to. Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 : I've been hearing a lot of songs/music from Shinji Hosoe recently it seems, while before a few weeks ago I had no idea who he was. 'Simple' techno is refreshing a lot of times. Hosoe's melodies are pretty good, and overall synth/composition is pretty good to. Great song. Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? : I don't know why, but Jazz is usually a Hit or a Miss for me. This one was leaning to the 'miss' side of the scale, the first time or two I listened to it. But during this last listen it actually isn't so bad. Decent, no points this time. Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman : I had a feeling The Steel Samurai would sneak onto the Song of the Week stage sooner or later. This song is pretty awesome, although I think I like the OST (DS version) better. But the koto (right instrument?) is pretty awesome in this version. Great song, some points to Phoenix Wright this time 'round. Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows - Unknown 14 : Great song. The song has a very interesting mood. Kind of has a mystical flow to it, along with an epic tone. The ending to the song is very well done. Even though it is slow, melody-wise and development-wise, it kept my interest throughout. Ape Escape 3 (Game Rip) - Wintersville : Sadly takes last place this week, decent, but I say that more as a filler than anything else. Awesome week, high quality nominations. I actually listened to this weeks batch plenty of times this week. It was so hard to divide the points up I kind of had to. ~~~POINTS~~~ Unknown 14 2 pts. Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman 2 pts. Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 1 pt. Strange Encounter 1 pt. Rounds 2, 11, 14 Forty Year Plan, are you finished? Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows - Unknown 14 - Haunting opera-ish vocals, with a soft minor piano; I really like this kind of thing. The strings which appear later in the track add a layer of complexity which gives the finishing touch.
Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter - Very interesting melody, the kind you can set on repeat and listen to until your battery dies. It's got all the marks of a boss battle, but I don't think that's a bad thing at all. I'll have to look up this game some time. From what Orion_mk3 said, the music sounds like something I should experience. Too bad I've got so many other old RPG's I also want to try... this one might get buried in the pile for some time. The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (PC Game Rip) - Winter 1 - I'm not a fan of MIDI's, so it would have been difficult for this song to squeeze a point from me, anyway. The melody of this song is too boring to spare the thing from my prejudices. And the abrupt ending = lose. Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? - I've become addicted to saxophone, and this song was like the first cigarette a week after going cold turkey. It's good stuff across the board, from the percussion to the melody, I think I'll keep it. Might be difficult to explain such an awkward name to someone browsing through my iPod, heh. Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman - Like Elijah, I prefer the original version in all it's GBA glory. I really liked the Gyakuten Orchestra Album, but thought this was one of the weaker tracks. Some cool stuff with the koto, but everything else seems too subdued for the Steel Samurai. No objections here, but not something that makes me jump up and yell take that! Ape Escape 3 (Game Rip) - Wintersville - "I'm not in the mood for this," I said the first time I tried to listen to the song. After a few more tries, with the same results, I've decided I just don't like it. The constant chimes don't help, but I can't find an instrument in the song that does something really neat. Fits a "winter" kind of location pretty well, I guess, but not worth listening to outside of the game. Space Invaders '91 (Game Rip) - Rounds 2, 11, 14 Meh, it's kind of lackluster compared to the other songs of this week. Once in a while, it breaks into around 4 seconds of what sounds like is going to transform into some awesome upbeat rock, but it just goes back to the boring melody initially introduced. Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 Interesting sounding techno stuff. The shelf life on this thing was pretty short, though. After the first listen, I couldn't make it through the whole track without getting bored and skipping. *~Point Distribution~* 2 points - Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? 2 points - Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows - Unknown 14 1 point - Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter 1 point - Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman How ya doing, buddy? ![]()

I feel bad not giving points to all those other songs. I really enjoyed this week. And my nom's been stuck in my head constantly for a couple weeks now, and I'm still not tired of it, so it's earned the three points. 2 points: Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows (Game Rip) - Unknown 14 1 point: Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? 1 point: Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 1 point: Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter 1 point: Space Invaders '91 (Game Rip) - Rounds 2, 11, 14 ![]() |
Pretty good week.
Unknown 14 - 2 pts. - My nom. A beautifully haunting piece done by Alexander Brandon. I'm not used to this style from him (I know him from Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and Tyrian mainly), but then again, I haven't heard most of his recent work. I still have to check out Unreal and Deus Ex, believe it or not. ![]() Forty Year Plan - 2 pts. - How does DH do it? Yet another first-rate jazzin' song from the winningest participant in SotW history. Winter 1 - 1 pt. - This was nice enough until the strings at 0:54. That's what produced a feeling in me that made me give it a point. Wintersville - 1 pt. - It's nothing amazing, but it's a charming little wintery piece that suits me right now. Looks like I liked the two best-liked and two least-liked tracks most. ![]() I have to say that as someone who loves the PW games (and their music), it was tough for me to accurately judge Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman compared to the others. This isn't one of my favorite PW themes, though, so I think me not giving it any points is accurate. *shrugs* What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
