Um. So...Falcons fire Jim Mora as coach. Article

Not really sure about this idea since now Vick gets to learn yet another offensive scheme under a different coach.

Kansas City was a huge surprise for me. I REALLY thought it would be Denver (as I'm sure everyone else did), but it didn't happen. Three from the NFC East this year, though I really didn't think the Giants would make it after their freefall in these last couple weeks (or the Eagles for that matter after they lost McNabb. Go Garcia).

*sits back to watch the carnage*

Ravens destroy Steelers and Bills in back-to-back weeks, then get a week off to watch the first round of the playoffs. Love it.

I'd say the Ravens-Colts potential pairing I predicted has become much less likely...The Chiefs can run a lot and that should spell their doom this weekend. Worse comes to worse, they won't stop Jamal Lewis if we have to play them. Hopefully the Chargers will lose before they get to us, but we've beaten them once and we can do it again.

Giants vs Eagles is going to cause a stir in my work place, with all of the New Yorkers that commute during the week and all of the people from the DE/PA area. Huge congrats to the Eagles after being dead in the water.

Super Bowl prediction: Ravens vs Saints. Ravens win.

Now that my computer is finally fixed, I can re-join the discussion.

I think the Chiefs, with Larry Johnson and company, will take out Peyton and the Colts this weekend. Unless Indianapolis' run defense actually, oh I don't know, holds LJ to a significantly low margin (say, less than 100), I'll give the Colts the edge.

As per the Jets/Pats game. I think we're in for a really good game with two rivals clashing. I like the Pats in this one, but it'll take a last second field goal to hold down the Jets.

I also like the Eagles to stave off the G-men and the the Seahawks to take care of the Cowboys. Whoever called a Ravens/Saint Superbowl, I couldn't agree with you more.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

So draft order has been released.

Raiders get the #1 pick, Lions #2, Bucs and Browns will fight for #3 and #4 (via a coinflip). Lions are keeping Millen, which means they may go for ANOTHER WR in the first round for the fourth straight year.

Well, I'm a Patriots fan by nature, so of course I'd like to see them in the big one, but personal druthers aside, I'm actually hoping for a Chargers-Saints bowl, or as it would probably be called, the Drew Brees Grudge Match.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Jesus christ. I wasn't expecting Millen to leave after this year, because Lions ownership is too dumb to let him go. But is it ever painful to be a Lions fan these days. And now I realize, the team will probably draft another bust in the first round this year. At least they won't be wasting the top pick on it.

I think the Pats, Eagles Chiefs and Seahawks will all move on. The Giants have no right to be in the playoffs with the way they played the second half of their season, and I see no reason that Eli will suddenly learn how to throw a football. I also think that LJ will run for 600 yards againts the Colts last ranked run defense and the Chiefs will eliminate Peyton and th Colts

Pennington wins comeback player of the year.

Spoiler:
Pennington wins Comeback Player of the Year

NFL.com wire reports

NEW YORK (Jan. 4, 2007) -- One rotator cuff injury often is enough to ruin a premier athlete's career. Chad Pennington overcame two in two years to win The Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.

The New York Jets had become too accustomed to seeing Pennington leave the field with a damaged right shoulder. After the 2004 season and again midway through 2005, he underwent surgery to repair his right rotator cuff.

There's was so much doubt about Pennington returning to form that the Jets had four quarterbacks in training camp last summer, including a second-round draft pick.

So all the seven-year veteran did was lead the Jets to a surprising 10-6 record and a wild-card berth one season after they went 4-12 -- most of it with him sidelined -- and changed coaches. Pennington's precise execution of a short passing game made Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery into 1,000-yard receivers and offset a mediocre running game.

Not surprisingly, Pennington didn't see winning the award as an individual honor.

"The organization has been great in providing me with all kinds of special resources to get back healthy and play at a high level," he said. "My teammates have been behind me since Day 1. For us to be able to put it together out on the field would mean a lot ... it's been such a team effort."

Pennington's efforts earned him 27 votes in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the NFL. He finished far ahead of two other quarterbacks, Drew Brees of New Orleans (8 1/2) and Carson Palmer of Cincinnati (5 1/2).

"He never reinvented himself," Coles said of Pennington, who passed for a career-best 3,352 yards and finished second in the AFC with a 95.7 passer rating. "You all (in the media) were the ones who left him for dead. I'm pretty sure he didn't leave himself for dead or he wouldn't be in this situation. And I definitely didn't. He never went anywhere."

Well, actually Pennington went under the knife twice, and because he's never had a particularly strong arm, his return to prominence was highly questioned. But through rehab and meetings, he clearly had mastered the offense of new coach Eric Mangini and coordinator Brian Schottenheimer by early August.

And there never was any doubt he would beat out the other three QBs in camp once Pennington began throwing as accurately as ever.

When Pennington was hit hard or sacked, he bounced up and went right back to work. Most notably against Houston, he took a huge hit and stayed down because he had the breath knocked out of him. Well aware of the hushed crowd, Pennington pumped his fist as he walked off the field, assuring the fans he and his right arm were fine.

"Chad is a tough guy," veteran guard Pete Kendall said. "I think anybody who stands back there is a tough guy, it's just that some guys unfortunately have been injured more than others. But that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with toughness.

"When you talk about toughness, you have to talk about mental toughness as much as, or moreso than physical toughness. Chad is way up there; he's a mentally tough guy. To be quarterback in this market, with the ups and downs that comes along with playing quarterback, and to go through what he has gone through, then come back and still play well, you have to be a tough guy to do that."

Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow received five votes, followed by two Eagles: QB Jeff Garcia with two, RB Correll Buckhalter with one.

Denver receiver Javon Walker, New Orleans RB Deuce McAllister and Tennessee RB Travis Henry each got one vote.

Pennington is the fifth quarterback to win the award in its nine years; Brees won it in 2004. He is the first Jet to win.

Last year's recipients were New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi and Carolina receiver Steve Smith.

And it looks like Bill Cowher will announce is retirement today at 1pm.

That must have been the same guy to design the Canucks "V" jerseys from the 80s.

Additional Spam:
I stayed up late into the night working on this bracket (which I say is pretty fancy but others may disagree). Props go to Sassafrass for helping with the helmets, also late into the night. Her work may not be obvious, but let me tell you that it was a pain in the ass for her to sit through hours of me trying to explain exactly what the fuck I wanted her to do (and, given the small size of the helmets, she'll probably be pissed I put her through all that only to convert the original 500+x200+ pixel helmets down to less than 50x35 pixel helmets. But I'm happy and pleased with the result nonetheless, and I intend to update this through each round of the playoffs.

Chiefs go three-and-out on their first drive.

GAME OVER

(Edit: Kansas City, like I suggested, was done after they were forced to punt during their first drive.)

The Colts defense was playing great. Held Larry Johnson to 32 yards rushing, and Trent Green to 107 yards passing. The also forced 2 INTs and a fumbled (which they recovered).

They gotta keep playing like that if they want to go to the Superbowl.

Peyton played poorly, but not horribly though. 3 INTs sure, but he was 30 for 38 for 268 yards and a TD. Pretty much his flaws today were those 3 INTs (2 to Ty Law).

I would hate to be Romo right now. Jeez, that can't be a good feeling when you botch setting the ball for a chip shot field goal (which probably would have won the game).

Not exactly the ending I envisioned for that game.

Y'know, as much as I hate Dallas (and oh I do), I can't help but feel bad for HRomo right now. Especially since he might have had the first down if he hadn't fumbled the ball - it would have been the only redeeming act to make up for such a monumental mistake. Oh, well.

Seattle may not be my city, but being up here in the northwest, Portland adopts all the pro sports teams they have that we don't. I'm not deeply invested, but I'm sure as hell rooting for them through the playoffs.

However, while I may loosely be a Seattle fan, I hate the Cowboys with a passion the fires of hell don't burn with. The Hawks can lose 56 to 0 next game, I'll shrug, but seeing Dallas lose the way they did fills me with great joy. There was a lot of yelling and high fives going on at my place over all those pyscho last half plays.

I would of rather TO botched the game, but anyone in a Cowboy uniform failing in such a grand manner is okay by me.
