Wii love to hack our console

Looking at some WiiBrew modifications, it seems that Action Replay is just the beginning for the Wii. Listed here is a plethora of useful things you can do with your Wii remote, the console, or other things related to the system and modifying it. Please note that any changes to your system or hardware may or may not be safe and that some of these methods have not be thoughroughly tested.

Although many of these are just novelties, trying some of them out may be useful! If you have any other modifications, hacks, or utilities, feel free to discuss and/or post them here and I'll try to maintain the list! Props to those at http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=Main_Page for their work.

Updated 2-7-07:

Fine Tune
Located at: www.finetune.com/wii
Purpose: Live music streamer

Very simple and designed for the Wii console. Worst best for listening simply to a single genre.

Running homebrew on the Wii

Note: This only gets the Wii running in Gamecube mode and, pending further hacking, Wii functionality cannot be used. This will only work on non-european consoles.

I don't get the point of listening to music on the Wii, when you computer has to be the server. Might as well plug in some speakers into the computer and listen it that way.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

hmm, i dunno, maybe people would like to stream their music into their entertainment room, rather than play everything in their office? get a clue, grawl -_-;

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Like I said, most of us will see it as a novelty, but some people have a better sound system in their TV and might see this as a nice way to play music.

yah. In my brother's flat his pcs are under his desk in his bedroom/office, and the tv/sound system is in a room halfway down the hall. until he moved, he had an xbox hooked up with xbmc running there streaming msuic and video from his room. much nicer than having unnecessary hdd/media server/etc shit cluttering an elegant TV setup.

but yeah. I'll be checking this when i pick up my wii next week. Very cool.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Nice, though it seems that all of the media streaming solutions are browser based. I wonder when the homebrew scene will be mature enough to allow a full fledged media center application to be running on the Wii, like Xbox Media Center. Probably not for a long while.

How ya doing, buddy?

There are some complications as addressed by the gentleman in this video, but considering how much has been done in the 1 1/2 months the console has been out, I doubt it will take long.

For the amount of time the Wii has been out this is fucking amazing progress. Nintendo are terrible at security.

It's funny though because the Action Replay and Freeloader seem to be widely sold and Nintendo has no issues with this.

They're not going to be assholes like Sony was with Lik-Sang.

Go to the youtube page and try to follow the tracks there.

Lik-Sang were selling official Sony products, not third party ones. There's a difference here.

Honestly I don't know why the PAL Wii doesn't work with the 1.06b Freeloader and the US one does. Whatever.

I'm not quite understanding that video. Not from a technical standpoint, but is this some sort of hacker's conference or what?

I take it that it is. Where is it held? Is it at regular intervals or what? I'm more interested in the gathering of the people than I am in the content of the video.

The video was taken during the 23rd C3 (Chaos Communication Congress) in Berlin, Germany.

http://events.ccc.de/congress/2006/Home

The point of this particular presentation was not to show the homebrew capabilities of the Wii but to point out the flaws of current encryption and protection methods.

Their main objective is to prove that all attempts at securing a system are futile because they will be hacked, anyways.

I was speaking idiomatically.
