Okami

Hi guys, apologies if this has been discussed already - its been a while since I was here (last post was for Shadow of the Colossus) - have you guys heard the soundtrack to Okami?

Its absolutely mammoth at like 5CDs, I had it for a while before i got the game and like most people I suspect, found it very difficult to get on with - mainly because you dont really know where to start, but also because it contains tons of short incidental pieces as well as full songs.

Having finished the game now, I can look back and pin point some amazing pieces of music that really stood out while I was playing the game - in fact I'd go as far as to say some of the tunes are amongst the best I've ever heard in a game.

What do you guys think?

While this is by no means a definitive list, I thought I'd quickly list some of my favourites, so anyone with the soundtrack but not the game can quickly jump in and hear some of the games finer moments

Disc 1 47+48 Shinshuu Field
Disc 2 37 The Eight Dog Warriors Theme
Disc 3 20+21 Ryoshima Plains
Disc 3 47 Water Palace
Disc 4 3 Okikurmi's Theme
Disc 4 4+5 Northen Country Kamui
Disc 4 13 Okikurmi the hero
Disc 4 16 Promise

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I also had the soundtrack for quite a while and I went through every track. I don't like doing that unless I've played the game first; like you said, you pin point songs when you play the game as it stands out more. I have the game but haven't played it yet, still going through midterms now.

Anyway, I've went through the entire thing but haven't found a single track I liked, except for 1 track which I don't see why it's not on your list.
Disc 4 -28- The Sun Rises
I love it, it's an empowering victory track.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

yeah its a pretty good track.. there are many I've not listed (mainly on disc 4)

Either way its truly a fantastic soundtrack, as I'm sure anyone who has played the game will agree.

Watching the sun set over a river while "The Eight Dog Warriors Theme" plays is just an amazing game experience.

I can't wait to play this game - I also think it will aid my liking of the music. My favourite tracks are the 'Extermination tracks' (possible boss themes) as well as Kusinada's Determination (think that's right) on disc 3.

I love the music, it is very atmospheric, though I need to be in a particular mood or liking to listen to it; possibly patient, especially with the first disc (I wish they had put all the jingles on Disc 5!)

I love the Okami soundtrack completely. I've never played the game, by the way.

Though I do hate the useless tracks that only go "boing" or some other pathetic noise. But other than that, the soundtrack is rich, powerful, and unique. This is one of those rare soundtracks that I actually consider purchasing (and will, once I get enough cash).

And my number one favorite track isn't on your list: 341 Shachimaru's Theme. <3<3<3<3

Strangely enough, there are several KOEI games that remind me of Okami's soundtrack -- Nobunaga's Ambition Haouden, which I'm listening to right now, especially. It's no surprise, since these are Japanese historical games.

I should mention some tracks that I enjoyed:

235 Kusa Village I
236 Kusa Village II

These comprise the Kusa village music. Though they are often overlooked, I think they contain some of the most remarkable music in the game (especially II).

417 Time of Parting

(this track will be meaningful to you once you've met Tobi)

215 Waka Appears
224 A Great Spirit Lies in Wait
347 Dragon Palace
403 Oki's Theme

Just a few others I liked. I'll be ordering the soundtrack sometime soon.

Oh yeah, once I'm finished with the game (I'm just past Yoshpet), I'll put together an English place-name translation for the soundtrack...

5 CD's for the soundtrack you say? SEE Square Enix? That's how many CD's Drakengard 1 needs! Every single piece of music, not just the level and the ending tunes!

Oh and I'm going to get this game. I'd gone off Capcom recently because of their Resi 4 on PS2 stunt. But this along with Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble has made me smile again. BTW is the animated series any good?

There's an animated series for Okami? O RLY? If so, that's news to me. I'll have to look into it, since the game looks very nice, but I probably won't get around to playing it for a while yet.

I enjoy Okami's soundtrack, in any case. I haven't listened to it closely enough to discern a batch of favorite tracks, but there's undoubtedly some great stuff on there. The only track that comes to mind right now as being excellent is "The Sun Rises", as jouhou already mentioned.

I do plan on playing the game in the future, and I'm sure my liking of the soundtrack as a whole will increase when I do so.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I haven't played the game yet, but I've heard the soundtrack at least once or twice all the way through a few months ago. Off the top of my head I remember loving the Shinshuu Plains tracks, and the Cursed Shinshuu Plains tracks as well. The album has a lot of filler, but that's to be expected at five discs in length...and it's pretty nice sounding filler, TBQH.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I swear that the last track on disc 5 has Gameboy Advance/ DS sound quality chords right at the end...suggesting a second game. But haven't clover studios been disbanded?

Yeah, that track was also called "Look Forward to the Next One", which definitely hints at a sequel game (on a handheld?). However, you're right, the people working in Clover Studio were dissolved back into the Capcom fold. It's probably still possible for a sequel to show up, but Capcom as a whole would be the producers of the game, instead of Clover Studio.

Dunno if anybody's seen this, but Seanne's posted what looks to be a rip of the OKAMI Retro Version game thats available on the Okami official website in his journal. I already loved the Okami music to begin with, but taking them and making them sound like they originated on the NES? GOLD. There's something to be said for quality chiptune work and I love it.

I wonder if there are other chiptune or doujin arrangements that have given similar chiptune arrangement treatments to more modern games.
