Bleh I won Planescape : Torment at a UT tournament, played it for a few hours and got bored of the whole "you're a living dead" shit... but maybe that's because I was the age that I was...too young

My favorite RPGs have been Diablo I/II, KOTOR, and Fable. Those 3 are the 3 best RPGs I have ever played on any system, and I wish more games would be made like them (if only Diablo III would get announced I would be a very happy man!).

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Lands of Lore : The Throne of Chaos is one of the best RPG's ever made. I'm also a fan of the german-made RPG's Gothic 1 and 2 they are more recent though.

Hard to define THE best RPG of all time - i think it doesn't exist because there are too many good games out there that have to be praised and loved

Just to listen up a few:
- Gothic I & II
- Final Fantasy (VII)
- Lands of Lore II
- Fallout I & II
- Might & Magic Series (especially IV-VI)

And many many more like Fable, KotOR, Baldur's Gate......

How ya doing, buddy?

You think so? Well thanks a lot dude, i see you like LOL as well!
I just finished the Throne of Chaos a few weeks ago, after all these years i've played Lands of Lore II (Luther and Belial just own!) i thought it would be time to get my hands on the the first part, it's really a cool game!

Now i have started playing III but it isn't THAT fascinating...but it's so nice and cool to come back to old places!
Too bad Lands of Lore isn't very mainstream-like, EA really abandoned the license

I'm also glad you like GOTHIC, because since it's a german game i thought it isn't so popular in the USA for example. Hopefully Gothic³ will rock like hell as well

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Try out these franchises and see how they play (I heard they were really good)
Ultima 1-7 (the later ones suck)
Might and Magic 1-7 (ditto)
Wizardry

Computer Gamig World calls them the "holy trinity" of PC RPGs.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I haven't tried out the Ultima Series except for IX Ascension. I can't remember why i haven't finished it - i guess the world was just too empty for me (Gothic for example has a very lively world!) - and i played Ultima Online for over a year on a freeshard...man, the good old times
---
Might & Magic:
I & II: Haven't played them yet and i guess i'll never do, the graphics are just too bad, you can only save the game at the inn and there's no automap!

III: I got the Might & Magic Trilogy (III-V) @ Ebay so i can finally finish The Islands of Terra, it's really damn hard!

IV-V: Besides VI my most favourite games of the M&M series, you can play months with these games!

VI: How should i describe it? OMG I JUST LOVE IT! Okay, the graphics are bad, the (german) voice acting is horrible, but the world is really big and it's so fun and it's fantastic to discover the world!
Oh well, i think i just typed too much

VII: I bought the game when it was released but didn't play it for too long, because on most CDs there was no music pressed - and i think M&M is living from it's music. I was too lazy to ask 3DO for a replacement...well guess i'm a bit too late for that now, since 3DO doesn't exist any longer I wish someone could arrange the Soundtrack for me (i've ripped the OST for M&M VI - The Mandate of Heaven already, hopefully it will spread all over GFF) or else i'll have to buy a budget version of VII.
---
And Wizardy? Maybe i'll give it a change sooner or later

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I also find the Heroes of Might and Magic series a great complement to the Might and Magic series. Try that out too if you're into strategy RPGs.

Yes of course i love the Heroes of Might & Magic series, i just didn't mention it because i don't really count the HoMM Games as RPGs. II & III i think were definately the best and i just hope the new HoMM V will bring back good old times!

They heavily integrate RPG elements in a turn based strategy game. Unlike most games that claim to use RPG elements, the HoMM series is a true RPG-Strategy hybrid.

I 100% agree. There's also a reason that none of them bring up the further Fallout "sequels."

I'd see a "PC" RPG as one that was disigned for the platform, not a port, so I can't in good conscience consider KOTOR as a PC RPG. In addition to the obvious Fallout, Planescape, and Diablo I&II, my personal list would include all the Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate I&II--especially II, and Icewind Dale I and II--which no one has mentioned), and, of course, Deus Ex, which I'm surprised no one has mentioned.

Deus Ex was a rare first-person 3D RPG, and the only good thing that ever came out of Ion Storm (ironically, from the branch that didn't have the giant office). I found its levelling system to be particularly innovative.

The Icewind series was the Infinity answer to Diablo, but with much more emphasis on story. Even though it was mindless hack n' slash gameplay-wise, I liked the way you were able to develop your character if you so chose by writing a biography and choosing a voice. I still remember one of the character taunts: "Step right up, I've got plenty of death for everybody!"

Diablo 2 was just awesome at the time, and lived up to the hype in every aspect except perhaps graphics.

NoX was Westwood's attack on Diablo, and it was really good in my opinion. It's multiplayer PvP was even better than Diablo 2's.

Baldur's Gate 2 was epic at the time.

Freedom Force is fun for those who enjoy superheroes RPGs. Especially putting in well-known heroes and giving them overpowered moves.

Planescape is so inferior in every way.
Personally, I feel Baldur's Gate is inferior to Planescape, and that Planescape is the best PC RPG. With such a great story, characters, writing, setting, and graphics. Yes, imho the graphics still stand up because of their unique artistic style. Even with the resolution issue, PS:T is far, far more interesting/artistic visually than BG.

I played BG partway through, and Planescape partway through, before my old HD died. I reinstalled BG and found it completely boring to play through again, so I Ebay'd it. On the other hand, I still have PS:T and plan to install it again in the coming months and finish it.

Now, if we were to go with best series ever, then Might & Magic, hands-down... Although VI as a stand-alone title is definitely up there.

How ya doing, buddy?

Best RPG on the PC is the gold box series of AD&D games that game out way back in the late 80s/ early 90s. There were several set in both the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance worlds.

These were the 4 set in the Forgotten Realms world. The cool thing if you really wanted to do it, was that you could basically grow your characters from game to game, as they would transfer over. The final one Pool of Darkness was an intense game from start to finish.

Pool of Radiance
Curse of the Azure Bonds
Secret of the Silver Blades
Pool of Darkness

Then there were the Dragonlance games.
Champions of Krynn
Death Knights of Krynn
Dark Queen of Krynn

These were loosely based on the novels of Weis and Hickman. It was awesome to be able to explore the world that they had described in the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy.

Graphically they can't hold a candle to the games of today, however storywise, and immersion, as well as the worlds they explored have yet to be matched on the PC to this day.

Post SSI gold box games that were good as well are Fallout, Planescape Torment, and Fallout 2.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Yes, yes and thrice yes. Especially with the Serpent Isle add-on. Ultima VII remains one of the greatest games ever made for PC, let alone rpgs. Compared to Ultima VII, Diablo was dull and repetitive and Fable runs on rails. Seriously, I've yet to play an rpg as truly free roaming as Ultima VII.

My favorite PC RPG is by far KOTOR 1, not only PC RPG but one of my favorite games of all time.
But I have to say another one I loved which was [b]Baldur's Gate 2[b/]. I can't even imagine how much time I spent playing this game.

I don't have much patience for MMORPGs because after a month or two I think it becames repetitive, and I don't have fun with those hack and slash RPGs since Diablo 1.

I think we pretty much covered all the bases with Fallout, Planescape, and KOTOR, but I also think the Black & White series, while it has a lot of different gameplay aspects, also plays like an RPG, it's jsut that the "character building" in the traditional sense has been turned into a more fluid, more interactive way of doing things.

I'd say HoMM III, but as far as "pure" RPGs, I'd have to go with M&M VII, absolute pure gaming magic :P

Last year I finally got around to playing Planescape: Torment after I heard it had a story that rivaled Xenogears'. But oh my...the interface was SOO frustrating and eventually I couldn't stand it anymore. I quit playing at a segment that seemed to be endless fetch quest after endless fetch quest. Not for me, I guess.

First post, oh well.

As far as offline PC RPGs go, I would have to say that Fable is indeed the shit. It has incredible replay value, and the actual gameplay system is damn good.

As far as MMORPGs, I personally play Final Fantasy XI Online, and I honestly like it. As far as I've heard, World of Warcraft is a good play too. But if we talk free MMORPGs, Guild Wars by far. It seems to give a slight feeling of the Diablo II system.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

What can change the nature of a man?

I consider Planescape: Torment the best RPG... not that I have played many games. Torment had, however, many problems that made it crash every two minutes... were it not for the fans that made several fixes to it...

So much dialogue! I know precisely *that* is what chased away many potential players... but what are you going to do?

Fallout 1 was great too... what a character The Master was!

There's nowhere I can't reach.
