I just got through a stoner metal kick and was listening to a bunch of
St vitus, Neurosis, Trouble, Bongzilla, Sleep, ufomammut, Acid King, High on Fire, and Boris.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Boris are seriously fucking cool. Great thing about them is that they release like three new albums every year - They have at least two out already this year, Vein and Altar. Vein is seriously weird, and Altar is relaxing. Kinda.

Well, I just poped in my copy of Thornography by Cradle of Filth. Even spent the extra cash to get this sucker from Britain for the sake of a limited edition "First Day Cover" copy. Though it's just a slip cover with the album's emblem with a green and black gradient behind it and the copy number on it (1628).

Thus far I can say it opens better with "Dirge Inferno" when compared to Nymphetamine's "Gilded Cunt". I rather like this direction they're taking, whether they're sell outs or not. It's still no Midian or Dusk and Her Embrace, but still good if you're a Cradle fan.

How ya doing, buddy?

I thought Pink Floyd was progressive rock. People just think it's psychadelic or stoner music--whatever the hell psychadelic rock would mean.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Progressive Rock is the genre that NEEDS something else tacked on for it to make sense. It's too broad to just say that one band is "progressive rock"

Not really. Rush are about the most plain straight-up prog rock band there is, so it wouldn't any sense to further classify them.

Floyd, on the other hand, could easily be called psy-prog.

As Krelian pointed out earlier, doom metal is a metal subgenre as typified by an often drug related sludgy, crushing sound. In other words, trying to sound like Master of Reality, hence Black Sabbath. Though I agree with you they shouldn't be categorized with the genre they inspired. Not that it matters at all.

I might argue with you on that point. A band like Rush could just as easily be classified as Early Progressive Metal. One also has to consider what you'd classify Yes as. If you just call them Progressive rock, that'd be contradicting Rush being called Straight up Progressive rock.

Geronimo Black can be called Prog rock, but i don't hear any similarties to Rush or Yes for that matter.

Mind you, i said i might argue with you. This is just me justifying my above statement.

I think that saying "Prog Rock" is like saying "Metal". Their both very broad terms, but it tells you what ballpark you're in.

And I agree, you can't compare Geronimo Black (hurrah for overly obscure references) to Yes, because they're much more influenced by the blues than the Silver Apples. Too many people think progressive music starts and ends with adding keyboards.

I didn't miss that.

What does everyone think of the band Sentenced? I know that many diehard metalheads tend to shun their newer material and embrace the older. I don't have any albums, however the songs I downloaded from their website, I certainly love, especially the song Blood and Tears. I really enjoy their 'suicide rock' style.

So, sometime over the summer Vemp sent me Tarot's 2006 single, "You". Seems their album was long-delayed, but it's available now and it's called Crows Fly Black. None of the songs really sound like the single (parallels with Blind Guardian here), but it's so damn good it's scary. Anyone who's into power metal that isn't totally gay will LOVE this.

As for Sentenced, they're one of those bands whose name I hear all the time, yet I have no idea what they sound like and I've never listened to them. Time to look for torrents.

Also, I'll recommend Raunchy to everyong - Danish ultra-melodic industrial metalcore. Think Fear Factory, Lamb of God and In Flames all rolled into one angry bundle.

Can you people probably give me a hint what other bands to look for...?
I'm in the mood of exploring around a bit in the broader genre...
So, what band should a big fan of Fear Factory, In Flames (admitadbly I actually like Soundtrack to your Escape and Reroute to remain which I have the feeling are somewhat shunned by "real" In Flames fans...), Killswitch Engage, Children of Bodom, Unearth and, well someone who actually likes it when bands evolve their style and don't cry "omg they changed their style! I HATE THEM NOW!" turn to when he's in the mood of experimenting around a bit?
So, what other bands would be worth a try? Hellacoptas? Entombed? I tried Amon Amarth and Iced Earth but I'm not really made for that... "true" stuff.

If you like evolution of styles then you should go Dream Theater and Helloween. I know i always pitch those two, but from what you're describing, it sounds like you should at least give them a shot. If you want more info, just ask me.

If you really into bands that aren't afraid to evolve, you really should try Rush, but many people will say their not metal, and judging by the bands you've listed above, i'm thinking that they're not the band for you. Regardless, they're terrific musicians and never fail to amaze me.

I'm by far not a "metal only" person.
On the contrary, I tend to listen to all kinds of music, metalish stuff is just among my favorites...
For example, I love Coheed and Cambria to pieces... And... Alexisonfire...
I just like good guitar-, and drumwork.

So I'll try to give Dream Theater a listen...

I also really enjoy Coheed and Cambria. Dream Theater sounds like it really work for you, as they have a rather wide range of styles they touch on, and have touched on in the past.

If you're not into Metal, then maybe stay away from Helloween, but i'd recomend at least giving Keeper of the Seven Keys Parts I and II a shot.

If you listen to all kinds of music, then you NEED to check out Rush. They've established so many different sounds for themselves over the last thirty years you're bound to at least find one album you like.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I only recently started listening to Rush, and WOW, I was missing out. Rush is now one of my favourite bands ever. Best part, their albums are like 7.99 each at HMV, it's kick ass!

There are SO many covers of Rush songs that have been done too, EVERYONE has covered Tom Sawyer at some point.(MSI, Deadsy, Beastie Boys(just a remix), etc...)

So yeah, definitely check out Rush!

I know where you're coming from musically too, I love TONS of different styles of music, Alexisonfire IS awesome, but I get dissed from metal and hardcore friends for listening to them. Also, I listen to lots of Indie stuff, which also gets dissed lots, but stuff like Death From Above 1979 and Metric (even though both of those bands broke up), and pretty much anything off of Last Gang Records is wicked. I also listen to TONS of Neil Young, I own like 16 Neil Young albums!(If you're looking for good guitar work, check out some Neil Young stuff from the 70's, some is wicked, especially albums such as Zuma(1975) and if you're into Blues Rock, check out RE-AC-TOR(1982). I know it's not metal and I shouldn't be pushing it in the Metal thread, but it might work for you...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
