ANY possible way to modify the file to get rid of the ads? More than likely, hackers will have this "patch" within a couple of weeks. Here's hoping. =/

Man, I heard about that last night...that's just crazy. People already thought $50 was a ripoff for the mod...now it's a mod with spyware/adware as well? This is almost worse than EA selling cheat codes.

With any luck, the in-game ad software will use a different port than the game, in which case you can simply configure your firewall to block that port and it won't work at all.

Oh, but here's a writeup and response from the people that run the advertising software: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/new...hp?story=11300. Here's a few more interesting parts of it, and my personal reflection:

Quote:
The time that each ad impression takes place is also recorded by IGA, alongside what type of ad content it was (billboard, megaboard, or video stream), the duration (how long was the ad seen for), the size of the ad relative to the player, and the angle of deflection (what angle the ad is viewed at).
Man, they go that in-depth in ad-viewing detection, and yet they can't make a decent single-player AI?

Quote:
Regarding today's online controversy, Townsend noted that "you are always going have that hardcore vocal minority" who don't want in-game ads. But he suggested that if those same people "knew the kind of painful transition that most publishers are going through right now", they might approve of in-game ads as an important financial support function for next-gen titles.
Yes, because we all know EA is just hurting for cash and would totally go bankrupt if they didn't start bundling adware with their $50 mods.

Quote:
Townsend explained that the company is "actually getting brands to do specific creative for games" to enable those brands to blend in better in the game.

Now I'm starting to wonder if that pic was photoshopped. It looks kind of odd. Not that I think real in-game adds would be any better. I remember playing the Verdun map in beta, and it had big bilboards everywhere with some generic logo on them. I'm sure they'd all be adds in the retail version.

Edit: Here's a bunch of screenshots of the placeholder textures for what will be adds

Plain ridiculous... I hate in-game ads since they were introduced in Planetside and oh boy they didn't blend in at all.

Last thing I wanna hear is Lil wayne latest album coming through my headphones before a major battle EVEN THOUGH I turned off all sounds.

Fuck you EA, fuck you. Fuck to all those in-game ads. Not gonna shelve 50$ for a half-finished mod.

Hey, since Jinn doesn't seem to come here anymore, I will take over the thread from here on. Aren't you guys lucky?

As your new boss, I have some words to say to all of you. Now listen up, wot!

--

I've finally been able to register at GFFWiki. I was unable to register at home, but was able to do so at work. Don't ask me why or how that is. Anyway, I've taken the liberty of updating the Members list in our little BF2 section (thanks to me), since all that information is sorely outdated. I want you all to go check it out and see if the stuff I added in there are accurate and up-to-date. If your name is not on the list, it's most likely because you're new and I don't know you well enough yet. If that is the case, PM me with the info and I will add you sooner or later. Likewise, if you don't play anymore for whatever reason, then let me know and I shall remove you from the list.

P.S. 2142 only players do not count. This list only applies to BF2.

--

Now for other news. I was thinking of changing our sessions a little bit from here on. There's basically the core game, one expansion pack, and two booster packs. I was thinking that maybe we should rotate between them each week, so we can at least play other maps besides the core game now and then. I'm not sure how to implement this nicely though, since not everyone has the add-ons. How about this? If you can make a session for whatever reason, then let me know. If several people can't make the session, then I say the rest of us go play with the add-ons instead. With less people playing, I doubt anyone's really going to complain about that.

--

More news, wot!

We haven't had a session for two weeks. The first time it happened, we didn't get many players, so we played another game instead. The second time it happened, I was sick and couldn't play. Taco didn't want to play, and since we're the two ringleaders, the session didn't get off the ground. However, I am much better than I was a week ago, so I will definitely be able to play this week. I was going to propose that we try out BF2142, but due to the recent outrage over the in-game ads and spyware and crap, I doubt anyone really wants to play it anymore. What do you guys think? From what little I played of it, I didn't like it much, but what do I know? Maybe it'd be better if I was with more people.

--

Thanks for reading this incredibly long-winded post.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Just another idea. How about mods in addition to the expansion packs?

They'd actually be easier to do, because all you need to run a mod is the base BF2; the mods are free.

Glad you took charge, Freelance Wolf.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

um... I have the demo of 2142, I refuse to buy the game because I just don't enjoy it, and its half-assed. I would play the demo with you guys this friday but I really would rather play BF2 or better yet, the MORE finished than 2142 mod, POE2.

PS: as far as expansions go, I have Special Forces and Euro Forces, I may buy Armored Fury soon.

I love Euro Force for Great Wall, but Armored Fury rocks for Operation Harvest and Operation Road Rage. We need more American-based maps.

What say we guys play SF this Friday? It seems most of our members, save 1 or 2, has it, and at least two people may not make it for this session. I've only played SF maps with two members here so far.

Any hope in everyone possibly downloading POE2? I promise the game is really good. The mechanics are a little more realistic i.e. the tanks get hit hardest in the back and treads, The guns have recoil but actually have predictable fire, The AA is awsome, the tanks have anti infantry and anti tank rounds. There are special kits you can pick up placed around the map. The commander has no arty, instead it is player controlled and player spotted, it requires more teamwork and more skill.

If you guys can please DL POE2 and maybe we can have a session next week. Not to mention it has multiple gameplay modes such as frontlines, destroy the nuke, and stock conquest.

It is awsome and you probably wont be dissapointed, the gfx actually look better than regular BF2.

SF sopunds good for tomorrow though.

If it's too realistic, I probably won't like it though. Well, I will see.

Okay, it seems two people are itching for some SF action. We'll go ahead with that unless I get lots of complaints. I want to play Iron Gator and Warlord. I heart those two maps.

no its not too realistic, it still has an arcadish feel but it takes away all the inconsistencies of BF2 like shity hit boxes and guns all of a sudden becoming inaccurate when you prone.

Get it, you wont be dissapointed.

Dont forget that there is a 1.5 patch for it.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Since I rarely ever play SF, I got all of my SF Basic Specialist medals, but that's about it. It was pretty fun tonight, though I think I honestly prefer vanilla BF2 to SF.

I got veteran grappling hook and zipline just for starting a round of SF. I guess they changed the requirements somewhere along the way.

I was struck with the no rank bug repeatedly and an interesting bug where the kit menu disappeared but still managed to have fun.
I didn't really care for the no vehicles option much.

I got no medals and I didnt get to play Iron Gator much, but it was still fun. Iron Gator and Warlord are the only two maps in SF that I care about. Ghost Town is okay. Still, it's fun to play other maps for a change, instead of the same maps over and over in the basic BF2.

I think some maps are good for the no vehicle option, but terrible in others.

I agree, for instance, friggin 64 player maps without vehicles, eughhh, it takes forever to do anything, especially big open maps like Zatar Wetlands, Gulf of Oman, Wake Island 2007, FuShe Pass, well, pretty much all of the Chinese Maps, and all the maps with big water.

It works great for city maps such as Strike at Karkand or most 16 player maps where vehicles are just irritating.

As for SF, I love SF just for the fact that I can unlock two weapons at a time now, and use some SF and Euro Force guns in normal BF2, it's great! The L96A1 is the most incredible sniper ever! Also, being in the same weapon class as the AWP from counter-strike it brings back memories...(it's the L115A1, the AWP is the L96A1, difference is the amunition .338 magnum compared to 7.62mm NATO rounds)

Also, grappling hooks and ziplines are very handy, as are the aerial drops in some maps...

Haha, yeah, I can't even imagine someone starting a 64 player Wake Island no vehicles server.

So I've been playing that Battleracer mod that Animechanic recommended a while back. I can't seem to find any servers, so I've just been goofing around by myself. Man, the turbo on the buggy is INSANE. Once, with a bit of luck, I made a jump in Dragon Valley from a mountain onto the roof of the temple, marked on this map:

If someone around here is capable of running a small server for us, I think we could have a lot of fun with this.

Oh, yeah. The server finder for that is kinda buggy. You have to shut off most of the server filters, and then on the drop-down game type menu, choose circuit or sprint.

There are 2 servers that are pretty much always up. The Sir Community's is one, I forget the name of the other.

I believe that there are still RIBs on any of the maps where the USMC starts on a carrier.
