Sorry for careening into another topic but....

Quote:
2. We know that the sensor bar goes all wonky when halogen lights are in the room. But did you know that natural sunlight messes it up too? That's right, if you have the sun beaming right onto the sensor bar, it doesn't work. For about an hour or so, the sun shone right into the store, the two MP3:C kiosks had to have curtains above them, and the Wii Sports Tennis and Shooting Game kiosks were unplayable since they were "shrouded" in sunlight. Later the sun went behind a building, and everything was in working order again. So when you get your Wii, don't play it in the sunlight. Or keep the sensor bar and TV away from the windows.
This is from the NSider forums, BTW, Link Here

Is that true?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Did we ever get a date on when we can pre-order the Wii in stores? I heard a rumor that it was Oct. 10th (tomorrow) but I called two of my closest Gamestops and they said that it was just a rumor. The system is only a month away from release, what the hell is keeping them from taking pre-orders?

Do you think they'll get pre-orders in THAT early? I think the stores can pre-order too, but won't get them for a while.

Gamestop needs to know how many systems they're actually going to be allocated, then they can start taking pre-orders on both PS3 and Wii. Until then, they're in the dark just as much as we are.

Double Post:
Update: I just confirmed the PS3 rumor with my mangaer at Gamestop - it starts tommorow (10/10), with a $100 deposit. Nothing on Wii yet, though...

You post that newegg crap like those prices mean a damn thing to us guys north of the boarder. Even $800 dollars is an ambitious price for a CPU/RAM/VIDEO upgrade. The stuff I posted was the closest I could find for price comparison. Of course I linked to a 7900 because I'm not so sure what you're suppose to do with a 7600 except maybe run Quake III. None of this means anything because we still need a new MOBO for all of this to work and the fact that speaking for myself would prefer to purchase actual decent PC components (ie. not the stuff above) which would easily drive the price well over $1,000. So $1,600 is a pretty realistic figure for a PC ugrade when you're speaking in Canadian dollars.

But by the way, why bother pre-ordering a Wii? It's not like there's going to be shortages right. Nintendo is shipping 8 trillion units for Christmas are they not? Or is there some sort of incentive for pre-ordering? It's just I would be pretty darn surprised when I showed up to EB on launch day and be turned away because they have no stock.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I'm glad I don't live in Canada then. By the way, a 7600GT and a Dual Core Processer can do much more than you think.

You second point, I agree with though. There's really no point in pre-ordering a Wii unless you simply MUST get your hands on one the first day. Nintendo is going to ship so many units that it really won't matter. whether you get one at launch or get one a week later.

My last question was never confirmed, by the way.....Will the Sensor Bar fuck up if you put it in direct sunlight?

I see no reason to doubt the words of a man who supposedly was there testing the thing out. Of course, this sort of situation is rather unlikely. Since when do you use your display with the sun beating onto it?
Of course, this problem makes sense, since the sensor bar detects IR radiation, and the sun is a huge heat source.
From the same reporter, it sounds as if Nintendo is working on a potential fix, or at least something to lessen that issue.
Answer this question: would this really be a problem for you?

How ya doing, buddy?

It wouldn't be a problem, but you never know when the situation would arise and that problem would be present.

As long as you don't play in a Green house or outside, you should be fine.

Btw, IR radiation you say? So if I directed the WiiMote to someone for a long period of time... I could give them skin cancer!? =O

IR radiation is not cancer inducing. IR is the acronym for InfraRed light, which is, in all practicality, heat. IR emitting LEDs are used in a great number of remote control applications, like your TV remote.

You are thinking of UV radiation, which may be carcinogenic depending upon the intensity, duration of exposure, and frequency.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Man, if you had the power to kill somebody with a Wiimote unobtrusively....that would be interesting. But yes, Infrared is harmless to humans. Radio and Infrared are completely harmless, up to visible light. After that, it becomes harmful with UV, Microwaves, X-Rays, and Gamma Rays.

But back to the Wii.

Any news on DS/Wii Connectivity in games? I like to speculate and the idea of DS saves unlocking special content for certain games on the Wii sounds promising to me.

I hope DS Wii connectivity is done right, and in ways that i'll care this time. I actually have a DS now, where as i didn't have a GBA during all of Gamecube's lifespan.

I'm not exactly sure what DS-Wii would mean though, can somebody fill me in on announcements/theories?

I think one of the most probable ones would be Pokemon, with the trading or uploading, like it was done in Stadium and Colessium (sp?) in the past.

Otherwise, they could make Zelda: Four Swords.... on 3 screens! Yeah, pretty unlikely. But something that uses another screen for multiplayer could be done.

Of course, publishers can always use it for really useless stuff, like unlocking things, or showing maps on the DS.

Oh, I forgot, mabye you can use the mic in the DS for voice communication for WiFi Wii games.

So I just watched these Mii videos. I don't know if this is old or whether it's been posted here before or whatever, but I'm guessing it has. My hand is fucking tired already and I haven't even touched a controller.

Yeah, the video is already on the front page of this thread except in Japanese language form. Anyway, I'm excited about the customizability of the Wii. I like the idea of creating a custom avatar to play in multiplayer games (at least I think that could be one possible use for avatars).

I've never really gotten far into the Dragonball Z series, but That looks like a lot of fun to play. Good thing it doesn't take huge moves and throwing your hands around too much to play it. Graphics aren't all that bad either, I suppose more or lless gamecube level graphics. But hell, I'm not complaining.

That's the thing with art style, which is probably what Nintendo will be using a LOT of on the Wii because it looks good and it doesn't require as near as much power to do as it does to create realistic looking things like the other systems. Heck some of my favouriate games are Okami and Wind Waker so I'm all for more styleistic games.

Another DS-Wii connectivity that I can think of is that you can download DS demos from home instead of walking into Best Buy or Toys R Us.

What I, and I'm sure everyone else, would love would be some kind of DS/Virtual Console emulation thing. Being able to not only to be able to play them again, but take them on road with you would be awesome. But I don't see that happening ever.

Dude, you're a genious. Download Vitual Console games onto the Wii. Transfer them onto DS, and play Virtual Console games on your DS. That really would be awesome. Does the DS have internal memory to store the games? If so, how much memory does the DS have internally?

Perhaps a DS firmware update is in order.

I know, wishful thinking. I don't care, it's still a kickass idea.

Not much, the only way it would work is if they loaded the entire game into RAM, and then as soon as you turn off the system it would wipe it and you'd have to redownload them. Unless Nintendo releases an official flash/memory card for it ala the PSP. Also the DS wouldn't really be able to emulate any system past the SNES, although since the controls wouldn't really work for something like N64 games that's not much of an issue anyway.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

There's a possiblity of them selling a gba pack to store snes and nes games you dl from the virtual console but they probably wouldn't do it b/c it'd be sure to be exploited. So they may offer it for NES games for RAM play but don't expect anything big. I don't.
