Itadaki Street DS: Mario and Dragon Quest

It's starting to look like Square wants to keep the DQ series associated with Nintendo, while leaving FF mostly part of Sony. The DQ characters are a better fit with Mario and company, anyway.

I'll tell you this, though, I love that they're using Mario's oldschool look. After all the extreme makeovers he's been having, it's nice that they haven't forgotten about the basic, pudgy plumber look.

How ya doing, buddy?

Err, you sure that Itadaki street?

Edit: Ah, there ya go. Man, we haven't seen this Mario in a long while. BTW, that's the first Jessica artwork that doesn't have her utters pouring out of her top. I hear this is like Monopoly, but with leveling.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

The text is part of the image and the two squires aren't exactly even.

EDIT: That should do it.

Also diggin' that art. So nice to see the early 90's style Mario again. Back when he didn't have a weird angry constipated look on his face all the time.

It's awesome seeing old school Mario for once, but Luigi is cooler. Why lie?

Any chance of this coming to NA? I presume not :(

The DS is region free of course, so you can always import this. You'll probably have to figure out how to play the game itself, but that doesn't stop most people as long as you can figure out the basic mechanisms of the game.

I doubt that. Approx. 1 million Dragon Quest-related games are released on the ps2 per year.

I've never played the Itadaki Street games, but the PSP version looked pretty cool. Wish I could same the same about this one.

Since when? Aside from one or two obscure games pre-snes, every single game with Mario's face in it has been released to NA, as far as I know.

Mario Mahjong DS (stuffed if I know the actual name of it, but it has Mario with his constipated look on the cover) and Mario's Picross 2 (SNES and GB) never got American releases, but that's because.. it makes sense, I guess.

Well I don't know, because see, it has Dragon Quest in it. And not all Dragon Quest titles have been released outside of japan because, well, I assume it has more of an audience inside japan, I guess. Whatever, I enjoy Dragon Quest titles so I'm immediately interested in this.

Is Akira Toriyama (or whatever) still doing the art for the Dragon Quest characters in this? The chibi in the picture doesn't look like the other chibi characters he's drawn in the DQVIII spin-off "Yangus' Fushigi no Dungeon" which is currently only available in japan.

I was speaking idiomatically.

The artwork for the Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest release didn't really use Toriyama's style either. Of course, FF didn't have Nomura doing their characters either.

A new artist likely goes in and just redoes everything their way so everything will mix together. Though using the old 90s Mario is certainly interesting, and I suppose in a sense fitting. There isn't too many ways you can draw Mario and make him seem different aside from subtle changes.

I would really love to see a Toriyama styled interpretation of Mario and Company but sadly the Itadaki Street games dont seem to use his artwork as a basis, so theres a different character designer at work here.

I really liked the concept of the PS2 and PSP versions having heard the rips of both so I'm hoping (but not getting my hopes up) that it'll wind up in the states eventually since they are trying to let Dragon Quest grow a bit here in the states. The old school Mario designs are pretty cool I must say.

Aw man, that's really disappointing. I'm not a huge fan of Toriyama's drawings, but that's mostly thanks to DBZ.

I've never played a Dragon Quest game that hasn't been Toriyama's work. Oh well, at least the slimes look the same.

Don't get me wrong now - I'm not the biggest fan of Toriyama now myself (I used to be stupid for his stuff but now I like to think I have better tastes in what I like VS what I dont like.) I was looking at the character designs for Dragon Quest 8 and something caught my eye.

When Akira Toriyama doesn't butchify all of his characters, his stuff can actually look really nice and expressive; stands out a lot more from your usual "big eyed manga" designs. The biggest problem that I've always had with his work was that all his characters look like they can bench press teenagers be they young, old, male or female. :P The early DB influence can definately be seen in his earlier Dragonquest work and during the period where he was doing the series heavily it was especially evident (DQ 3-6). But after the series fully finished, I think his designs kind of toned down a slight bit. 8 had some of the most varied character designs I've seen come from him. His females looked female, his fat people looked fat, Kid Yangus didnt look like some kind of chibi hercules. I dunno. Then again I think I need to see more of his artwork post 7 to form a better opinion, which isn't much.

I've gotten wildly off topic... :P

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Itadaki Street DS: Mario VS. Dragon Quest

Since no one is making this thread, I thought I'd make once since I haven't started a thread in a while (after the Evolution/Revolution disaster!)

http://ds.ign.com/articles/736/736719p1.html

Quote:
October 2, 2006 - Square Enix has successfuly taken Mario to the court with Mario Basket 3 on 3, and now it's attempting to do the same with board games. The Final Fantasy publisher announced today Itadaki Street DS, the latest installment in its long-running board game series, and the first to feature the world's most famous plumber.

While the PlayStation 2 and PSP entries in the board game series featured a Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest crossover, Square Enix has teamed up with Nintendo this time around. Itagaki Street DS will feature characters and themes from both Dragon Quest and Super Mario Bros.

Sadly, aside from the logo, which hints that Mario and Slime will appear in the title, we don't have details on which characters and stages will appear in the game.

Gameplay details are also a mystery at this point. Square Enix has announced that WiFi support will be included, so you'll be able to play over the internet with your buddies.

Although relatively unknown in America, Itadaki Street is quite popular in Japan thanks in part to its connection with the Dragon Quest series. The focus of the game is on raising money by opening up shop and charging other players as they pass over your real estate.

Recent installments have earned worldwide attention thanks to the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest crossover, the first such cross-licensing for the two mega properties. With an appearance by Mario, and Dragon Quest's recent worldwide success, perhaps we'll at last see this series in our parts.
I have absolutely no idea on what this puzzle game is about so someone fill me in on the whole thing. The only detail that's caught my eye is the Wi-Fi and the actual fact that Mario's crossing over with with a Squeenix game.

Discuss discuss.

It's okay, chaofan. I'm sure over half of us don't even know what Itadaki Street is so at least with the merge we got a picture from Guu Final and now the thread is 350% better. =)

Wow, Square Enix has definitely decided to go off into unexplored territory with the Mario-Monopoly-Dragon Quest merger.

I'm really hoping that this game doesn't turn out to be a Mario Party with simply a Square Enix franchise attached, but Square should be able to pull off a unique twist with the game. Heck, they did that for Mario Hoops.

I'd probably still buy the game regardless.

Well, to be honest i dont like Itadaki Street too much, its just a Monopoly styled-game with some extras, i played also the Dragon Quest + Final Fantasy title and its seems that this title is almost the same...

By the way, the character ilustrator of this game is Shiro Amano, not Toriyama.

And Game WATCH has released some HQ images of the characters, just one thing to say: OLDSKOOL!!

If only those desings where the official art of New Super Mario Bros...
