Files Types and New Object menus (adding and deleting)

Is anyone familiar with adding or deleting entries from the File Types menu? I've always noticed that there are tons file types and objects that I don't use and it's probably slowing down my computer (maybe not by a lot, but I'd like to clear them out anyway). Is there an easy way to back up these extensions and objects (like the registry, just in case I mess up or want something back) and then delete them to see how I like it?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

TweakUI (an official windows XP powertoy) lets you edit the new menu options.
