Oddly enough, I once read an anime fanfic (of all things) that gave a unique insight into what would happen after we die (And happened to coincide with a major religion's beliefs):

In essense in the fanfic: Our soul/essense/spirit would be consumed by the source of life, and that which is gives new life, so while we lose our individual traits, memories, & thoughts, we would help in the creation of new life, and so we would live again, in a sense (Reincarnation homes).
Greeted by death, formed into the closest thing that gives us comfort, this angel of god directs us towards the 'midlight', or the source of souls, and comforts us while we grip with the whole 'omg I'm dead' issue.

Of course it could/probably is all just bullshit, and we could just simply cease to be... which I personally think sucks.

Speaking of God & stuff, The concepts of Heaven & Hell give a relief/scare to those who are concerned about what happens when they die, but one thing I never got around:
1. Generally, with various methods of describing the locales, we are told that Heaven is a place where we live in eternity in happiness & joy... ok but like what happens? We're never really told about what sort of place Heaven Might be, and conversely, we are told that Hell is a place of eternal dammation, that the actions we have done on Earth have sent us here forever...

2. Basically my problem is, that in effect the two places are saying: The entire summation of the rest of my existence is either Bliss or Pain. Very Absolute thinking right? Abolutes generally are never good, in either positive or negative ways, and for religious leaders to say that the rest of eternity is a coin toss between one of two abolutes seems a bit, well illogical and full of plot holes (Obviously the sort of torture/pleasure would depend on your level of good/evilness on earth... sort of like how "Dante's Inferno" described some parts of Hell as being places of loss of emotion, where others were places of endurance in physical torture or emotional rape, and Heaven had different kinds of pleasures, from the simple joys of looking at the clouds on a nice spring day to constant & epic orgasms.

Sorry to ramble on, but it just seems that there's a lot of unanswered questions even in the belief systems.

If I knew that there was at least SOME FORM of an afterlife, it would give me relief. Not to mention, a lot better of a ground to stand on when it comes to decisions in my life.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I do believe in certain things that are a sort of deduction I have made during my various life experiences. In a whole, I do think we re-incarnate. Not all of us though. In fact, as a muscle may shrink from nonusage so may the soul. If you do not keep it "alive" then it will undoubtedly die just like flowers, animals, human beings need to feed themselves to keep going. It is a quite an unquestionable rule of life that cannot be denied... Now, does the soul really exist ? I would answer that yes, it does exist for some of us no matter what truly is. Though we live in the same world we all have different ways to interpret reality and to enjoy it .As long as we are in harmony with our beliefs then everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds ;op

-Hope you won't get me wrong, I do not preach in favor of religions here as I don't adhere to any kind of religion myself as I believe them to be a prison for the soul-

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
