What song evokes the most emotion in you?

And why?

The biggest one for me is by a song called "When Paul Sparks" by Copeland. I've always been drawn to songs that tell some kind of story or paint a picture of a situation, as opposed to "I miss/love/need/hate you," although there are plenty of great songs along those lines.

This song is a "situation piece" about a man waiting for his lover to wake up at her bedside in a hospital, imagining what it'll be like when she wakes. There's a lot of great imagery in the song's lyrics, but my favorite lines are these:

"I'll be ready on that evening, when you're starved for my attention,
And you'll say, 'Wake now, sweet prince, there's a brilliant sky above,
And a jealous moon in love, and they are starved for our attention'."

Right after those lines, at about 2:45, for the first time in the song, the big rock guitars come in and I just get chills every time I listen to that part. I don't know if it's the poignancy of the situation, the passionate delivery, or the imagery of the lyrics, but this song kills me.

I'd have to say "King Of Pride Rock" by Hans Zimmer. This song most definetly tells a story to me, as I've always seen the Lion King movie and score as very emotional. Sometimes when I'm feeling down I'll listen to this, as it mirrors the pain I'm having, and the fight to regain myself.

It's heard near the end of the fight between Scar and Simba, and as Simba goes to regain pride rock after fighting to win.

Such a good piece of music....

I'd say "Movie in my Mind", "Bui Doi", or "Fall of Saigon" from Miss Siagon are all pretty emotion for me. In fact, I'd say the whole album is pretty emotional.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

The song that evokes the most emotion in my mind though would probably be (for now) "La Salle De Bain" by Shiina Ringo.

I don't know if I interpreted it correctly, but it sounds like suicide and stuff is involved. The "Harry Potter mystical feel" seems to support it a touch, although the accented English may turn some off:

After hearing the lyrics closely, I think "wow, what a deceptive song" It makes me think, in contrast to the random JRock I just like the melodies for.

"The Spirit Carries On" by Dream Theater, the song has made me cry numerous times.

There are many, but one that comes to the front of my mind ~

April Love by Stillwater

It was played at my son's father's funeral and to this day I cannot listen to it without crying. It was very popular in this area back in the late 70's as was the band itself and was one of Paul's favorite songs.

If anyone laughs at me, I'll track them down and do them bodily harm, but for me it's "The Path of Wind" from the movie My Neighbor, Totoro. My youngest son used to watch that movie every single day, and it brings back memories of the many hours I spent snuggling with him on the couch watching that movie. Sometimes I actually get tears in my eyes when I hear it.

Now he's almost nine years old and won't cuddle with me anymore. =/

Two words.

Linkin. Park.

Those songs always seemed to make me angry. And the strange thing is, I'm usually HAPPY st the time. O_o

Oh, And Linkin Park's "One Step Closer". I don't know why, but that song kicks serious ass.

It's safe to say any really sad country song evokes emotion from me, which is why I don't listen to country. That genera could turn anything into a puddle of misery and woe.

Anyway, the song "My Beautiful"--Lennon W/Travis Meeks causes me to think back to the sadness of the memories I shared with a guy I was involved with years ago. It's a beautiful song, but I don't listen to it very often.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Quite a few actually...lemme think

The ones that make me really think or sad would be:

Muse - Blackout (Just the message behind it, the slow waltz type feel, and I can relate to it since it's helped through the hard times)

Evanescence - Hello (I always thought it was a beautiful song, and I knew the song was about Amy Lee's sister dying and since my best friend passed away recently I'm able to relate to it completely and be moved even more by it)

The songs that make me emotional just for being amazing songs are:

Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek (All the layered vocals, the harmonies she creates with her voice, the lyrics, just an amazing song)

Nightwish - Ghost Love Score (You know when you hear a song for the first time and you think "shit, this song is just perfect", well that's the feeling I get each time I listen to it. It's got everything I could need in a song, beautiful lyrics, the good ol' rock element, stunning female vocals, backed by a choir and orchestra. Pulls on the heart strings each time)

Muse - Hysteria (The bass, the guitar solo, the lyrics, this song just makes me want to rock out and cry all at the same time. Plus the whole "longing for what you can't have" theme to the song just suits me perfectly =p)

Delerium - Silence feat. Sarah McLachlan (Just so beautiful ;_;. Plus there's an awesome FF8 fanmade video that fits perfectly with the song and hearing it just reminds me of the amazingness of it =p)

Muse - Sing For Absolution - (Yes another Muse, they're my favourite band for a reason dammit! Just a beautiful song and the lyrics are one of my favourites)

Some other songs that worth a mention would be Brian Eno - An Ending (Asent), Coldplay - Fix You, Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter, Eisley - I Wasn't Prepared, Evanescence - My Immortal/You/Before the Dawn/Missing, Hans Zimmer - King of Pride Rock, Lacuna Coil - Comalies, Madonna - Frozen, Micheal Giacchino - Oceanic 815, Mozart - Lacrymosa, Muse - I started typing out songs but it ended up being most of them, so yeah everything Muse has ever done >_>, Nightwish - Sleeping Sun/Dead Boy's Poem/Sleepwalker/Bless The Child/End of All Hope/Ever Dream/The Phantom of the Opera/Dark Chest of Wonders/Nemo/The Siren/Higher Than Hope/Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan, Oingo Boingo - Insanity, Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, Within Temptation - Mother Earth/Memories/Aquarius.

That killed some boredom for a while =p

The first song that comes to mind is The Point of No Return from The Phantom of the Opera. No other song that I have heard gives me as amazing of a musical orgasm at its climax than The Point of No Return. Why? I'm not too sure. It's like the whole song builds up to that one moment and the BAM, there's a huge emotional release.

A more mainstream song that evokes a lot of emotion in me is Time of Your Life by Green Day. It's not like the song is anything special, but I have very strong, sad memories attached to it from when someone that I deeply cared about left my life years ago.

I feel the same way about a lot of these songs people are mentioning.

Anything from Miss Saigon is utterly emotional. I saw the show when it was on tour about 2 years ago and I remember I was about to bawl my eyes out during Kim's Nightmare where she and Chris get seperated and he flies away in the helicopter.

Imogen Heap - Hide and Seek - Have to agree with that one two. One of my friends was a fan of the OC and I'm not a huge fan of it, but she told me I had to listen to the song because it was good. So I did and it was very unconventional with the fact that it didn't have any accompaniment, just a layered voice with a little bit of an electronic feel. I like songs that feel like it tells a story and this song has this feeling to it.

Sarah McLaughlin - Full of Grace - Now, anything with Sarah McLaughlin is automatically depressing, but this one just had a connection with me. I heard it during like the 3rd season of Buffy (fantastic show) and it fit so well and I just wanted to cry for Buffy because of a decision she had to make. On it's own, I still listen to it and feel like crying.

Some people have mentioned the music from the films by Hayao Miyazaki and I agree 100%. In particular, I seemed to be moved to tears during portions of Howl's Moving Castle when Sophie was turned into the old woman. The music during that part where she is in the shop gives you the feeling of frailness and sorrow.

There are many songs from Les Miserables that just fill me with tears. I Dreamed a Dream, Bring Him Home, On My Own, A Little Fall of Rain, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables. All of them are sad and convey the true feeling of the story.

Finally, alot of the orchestrations in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun either make me very happy, sad, or hopeful. In particular there is a song at the end of the movie when the main character, Frances, has her house finished, she has her best friend living there with her baby, she had a wedding there (not her wedding), she cooked for people, and she got all her wishes. The song is very much in the background and soft until the very end of the movie when this old man who doesn't acknowledge Frances at all gives her a little smile and a simple tap of his hat and she goes back inside and this faucet that hadn't worked at all since the beginning of the movie is gushing with water and she just laughs and smiles and takes it in. That's when the music swells and it's very bittersweet and happy. Doesn't make me cry, but it just makes you smile. Man I wish I had the soundtrack to that movie.

LOL

I just about freaked out when I saw this as the first post of the thread. That is my favorite Copeland song, and I am a huge Copeland fan. Ran around here with a Copeland Ava-Sig combo for quite a while when "In Motion" came out. Been to 3 Copeland concerts, own all 3 of their discs.

I couldn't agree more.

Most emotional song for me... It's got to be the song "Wedding Dress" by Derek Webb. It's the most emotional song for me 'cause I live it about each day. Yah, it is about my beliefs in Christ, but more importantly, its about my role and what I do. The song is about the deepest kinds of betrayal, and about forsaken love. Pretty strong stuff. The lyrics are so bold, and about as shocking and harsh as an Eminem song.

So many good songs already listed and I would be lying if I didn't agree with alot of them...
King of Pride Rock is beautiful. The entire lion king soundtrack is amazing to listen to - if only it contained more score material and less of Elton Johns extra arrangements of the songs.
One Last Wish by James Horner (Casper soundtrack) is a beautiful track, the piano and orchestra are so haunting.
Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. The fact that he died makes this even harder to listen to.
Les Miserables, like ArchesFan said, has alot of emotion in it. On My Own especially.
Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber. One of my favourite peices of music full stop! Originally written for the war film Platoon has been used so many times since, including a well known dance remix by william orbit which actually doesnt butcher the song!
Edit: A song that fills me with emotion but doesn't make me mad is Duel of the Fates by John Williams for The Phantom Menace of course. It just kinda fills you with passion!

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Richard Ashcroft - A Song For The Lovers: I guess the lyrics really touches the way I feel about being lonely and always too late in love though through this verse.

"Don't wanna wait, Lord I've been waiting all my life but I'm too late again,
I know I was scared,"

The Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now : During the great depression era of my life after got kicked from an Ad Company and cheated by a chick .
The song really makes me wanna get my revenge for good

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Awwww, the hell with it I need to add a few more. Sarah McLaughlin's "Angel" (because of a certain someone who used to sing that), Coldplay's "The Scientist", (from Wicker Park), Hans Zimmer's "Elysium" (from the Gladiator ST), Plumb's "Cut" (because it is sooo emotionally strong).

The song I mentioned previously as my most emotional, yeah scratch that. It's up there but this one takes the cake sooooo much I have to post a link....

How sad. I remember when my mom gave me more hugs...but onto the topic.

I'd say Elliot Smith's Ballad Of Big Nothing. I really like the music to it.
And basically anything that by Chopin. Depends on the time though.

I was playing one of his preludes(in a major) at an elderly couples home. And the wife comes up to me and says how her mother or sister played that. And she keeps thinking about how her time is nearing and her husband(who is really ill. can hardly stand up.). I just can't help but get a little tears in my eyes when thinking about what she said while I play that particular piece...
I get so sad when I go play for them.

Oh yes... that's definitely a very emotional song. I really love that song. Another song from Whitacre that evokes emotion for me is "Lux Arumque". The chords in that song are so beautiful, and they just melt into one another. If you haven't heard it, I suggest you try to find it. It's so beautiful.

By the way, I found the name of the songs on the Under the Tuscan Sun Soundtrack and the song is called The Spigot...it sounds kind of sorrowful actually at the beginning, but fanciful and happy at the same time. Ends kind of abruptly because it picks up into a medley of all the songs into the credits. Anyway, you guys should check it out.

Thought I would mention George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue because that piece of work was played to me by my aunt at nights and has always stuck with me. There is especially one part of it and it's usually 10 minutes into the piece if it's the full thing where it slows down and it's mostly beautiful strings and it always makes me feel light and hopeful and happy.

How ya doing, buddy?
