Fitness

How often do you work out and exercise? Do you really care about what you eat? Do you play any sports? How important is staying fit to you and how do you ensure that you make it happen?

I've been mostly sedentary my whole life. As in, fast food, video games, rarely played sports, etc. The most I ever did in my youth was ride my bike and skateboard [badly]. But starting about 2 years ago I started to do some moderate exercise, mainly calesthenics in my room and some random shit outside. January of this year I joined a gym and started to go as often as I could [about 3 days a week.] At first I didn't make the most of it and was so out of the exercising cycle that I couldn't/didn't do much, but I'm making the most out of this summer and making every effort to stay fit.

I'm of average height and weight. 5'7". About 145 lbs. I'm really interested in shedding fat and letting the muscle show, along with building muscle. I'm beginning to make progress in terms of weight lifting... well, everything, really. As I've already said, I'm making the most out of this summer. Not only going to the gym but playing tennis, badminton, and swimming. I'm trying to fuse my normally sedentary life into as much action as possible, because I plan to be this way for the rest of my life. I've become quite the health nut, I admit, and strongly monitor what kinds of foods go into my body. I dont' starve myself, that's retarded, but I don't touch fast food and try to get like 6 small meals in a day and whatnot.

I can elaborate but I don't want to seem too much like a freak. I blame/thank the Rocky movies for inspiring me, rofl. I'm curious on how high of a priority fitness is to the members of this board, so please, entertain me [maybe even inspire me] with your ways.

How ya doing, buddy?

I play DDR at least a few times a week. After 6 years of playing, I've become extremely proficient at it, and I usually play for about an hour on heavy. I can even play MAX 300 without the bar. This is my primary form of cardio. I also do a LOT of walking, mostly around my own neighborhood.

I lift weights three times a week, doing 5 sets of 5 reps each. When they get to easy to lift, I'll add another set, and when I get to 10 sets, I'll increase the weight I use and go back to 5 sets. I've only been working out for a short time, but I've already made some pretty big gains. If I keep gaining muscle at this rate I'm going to be pretty ripped by the end of the year.

Quote:
Do you really care about what you eat?
Heh, not really. I still drink Mountain Dew and eat lots of candy and other stuff I probably shouldn't eat. But that hasn't stopped me from losing 30 pounds just this year alone. I just don't eat when I'm not hungry, and I stop eating the very moment I begin to feel full.

Quote:
Do you play any sports?
Only if you count DDR as a sport.

Quote:

Being healthy is very important to me because I want to live as long as possible, and with as few bodily problems as possible. I also want to be attractive as possible, both physically and mentally. I must say, I feel a lot more confident now that I'm getting buff, and I look a hell of a lot better than I did before as well.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Shit man, I'm your height and that's my current goal weight. I hope I don't show any fat on my stomach by then.

Currently, I'm 5'7" and 156 pounds.

I started the summer (specifically May 22nd) at 193, and have lost 37 pounds so far.

Basically, I do 30 minutes of aerobics (running on an elliptical machine that I have) every day, plus some minor weight lifting and an ab-machine.

My diet has drastically changed from before the summer. I no longer eat fast food (and if I do, I order the smallest calorie items such as chicken soft tacos "fresco style" from Taco Bell). I subsist on a low calorie diet, some may consider extreme (less than 1000 calories a day, usually 2 lean cuisine meals and snack on vegetables + maybe a 100 calorie snack pack). However, the results are really showing, since I'm losing around 3 pounds a week at a constant rate. Also, I'm never hungry, since I drink tons (and I mean TONS) of bottled water and after the first 3/4 days, your body adjusts to the smaller diet.

Other than the aerobics and such, I don't get much other exercise except for constantly crouching/walking/standing at my retail job. The rest of the time is spent watching TV/playing games/computer.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

This year I've become increasingly focused on staying in shape.

I've always considered myself pretty flexible because I've been stretching everyday since my adolesence began! However, just recently I've been developing a little regmine. I'll do a number of push-ups in the morning after stretching and right before going to work. Some days I'll do pull-ups in the morning. And on other days I will spend some time on the Ab Lounge.

My family has had the Ab Lounge for a number of months, but for a while it was merely collecting dust. Once I started using it I realized how fortunate we were to have it. I've never had a full blown gut, but I have definitely lost my solid definition in the torso since high school. Now, my goal is to have a 6-pack by the end of the year!

One important tidbit I'd like to share. The first thing you should do when you wake up is a drink a full glass of water. This activiates your metabolism for the day.

On that note, my diet actually consists of mostly water. I only have time to eat breakfast at work, but no lunch. I try and drink as much water as possible because this curbs my hunger extensively. My diet is a peculiar one because I cannot eat fruit. This removes a solid chunk outta my food pyramid, so I fill the gap with various herbal supplements. No protien builders or anything, just vitamins.

I basically stopped eating most fast foods after watching Supersize Me last year.

I guess I could say that I'm pretty healthy in terms of fitness, but I still need to work out a lot more than I do. I did start lifting weights just to increase my biceps, but I hardly do that anymore.

I do drink a hell of a lot more juice and water than I did a few months ago, and I don't eat nearly as much junk food, though I still need to lose a few pounds. I may have changed my diet, but the fat is still there, so I guess I'll need to get my arse in gear if I want to actually lose any weight.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Well I'm 5'8" and 115lbs. I put a lot of effort into making sure I eat healthily and I make sure I have at least 30mins of exercise each day, but I drink and I smoke so that kind of defeats the object of staying fit, as much as I want to be. Considering my BMI you'd think I'm healthy but I'm not going to be winning any sporting events for many years to come yet. I used to be part of many sports clubs (hockey and basketball) but now I really can't be arsed to be frank. I've reached my lazy stage.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

I started working out again when I had a required PE class in June and I've been keeping up with it since. I work out three to four times a week and I do cardio, weights, and abs in each workout. I change my weight training focus on different muscle groups with each workout. For example, yesterday was legs, hips, and butt day and tomorrow will be arms, chest, and back day, then legs, hips, and butt again the day after (I had too much crap to do to workout today and often have a lot of work, hence three to four workouts a week instead of five or six).

So far I've lost 5% body fat and gained about ten pounds in muscle, which I think I gained mostly in my freakishly strong, yet still feminine-looking, legs.

My diet is pretty healthy and has been for about three years now. I'm not really a health food freak: I just don't like the way that junk food tastes. I stopped eating junk food years ago and now it tastes like crap when I eat it.

I'm 5'something and 100 lbs.
Waif-like in appearance and no weights or anything. The closest thing to exercise I have involves:
- (arms) - drummania, taiko drum master, piano pieces with lots of octave chords
- (legs) - ddr, random walking to the mall/around town

I usually associate having to exercise with larger people. I don't really seem to gain weight, however much I eat and I don't mind people calling me out on how thin I am, so I don't bother exercising.
I might want to be slightly muscular, but definitely not too much, but that would involve many sessions of lifting weights.

Um..... I go to the gym just about every day or two days for ~1 hour or more. To start off, I do a 10-15 minute jog and then I move onto the other exercises. At this point, I just work on whatever muscle I haven't already worked on. Here is my weekly schedule, but in no particular order.

Day 1: Biceps, Abs
Day 2: Chest, Triceps
Day 3: Back, Shoulders, Abs
Day 4: Legs, Abs
Day 5: Day of Rest! (THANK GOD!)
Day 6: Biceps, Shoulders,Abs
Day 7: Chest, Triceps, Abs

Haha, I tend to work my abs all the time, but only small exercises and nothing greatly intense.

As for other exercises, I golf quite a bit, so while I'm out in the sun using some sort of muscles and sweating my ass off, I feel good after it. I haven't really been involved in any sports because I pretty much retired from hockey after god knows how long of playing, but I might decide to get involved in martial arts. We'll see.

Oh, and I'm 6"1, 162 pounds. Yes, I'm very skinny, but I don't eat enough! I can't cook. =\

I'd like to think I'm in pretty good shape since I fight in MMA events in Hawaii and Utah for the past 8 years. So to be in shape I train to get my strength and endurance the best I can for those brutal 3 rounds. I like to try to get 5 work days and rest on saturdays and sundays so that I'm all fresh and ready to go come monday.

Mondays I like to go through a circuit that usually last 10 or 20 minutes long. Depends on what the circuit is, I'll workout with either kettlebells/sandbags/weight sleds/sledgehammers/flipping tractor tires or going through Tabata intervals.

Tuesdays are probably the easiest since I run sprints. Usually 5 long sprints and 5 short sprints. Sometimes I run more, but it depends on the day.

Wednesday are strength days. I hit the heavy basics like heavy squats, bench presses, deadlifts, military presses, weighted dips and chinups. It's always a full body workout since I only have 2 strength days in the week.

Thrusdays ae GPP days. I hate these days because these days are like Mondays. Long circuits that get you huffing and puffing, and by the end of the workout you're drenched in sweat and your heart is beating like drum. These last 10 - 15 minutes, no more than 20 minutes.

Fridays I have my second strength workout. Not as heavy as the first day though, but still a full body workout.

Saturdays, when I don't have a fight saturday night I like to go through Strongman exercises. It'll go like throwing beer kegs filled with water or sand. Then flipping the tractor tire across the field next to my house. Then farmer's walk with heavy dumbbells or kettlebells. Then working out with the weight sled. And then I like to finish up by hitting the tractor tire with my sledgehammer for 200 or 300 swings.

That's pretty much my entire week. I have muay thai or jiu jitsu classes throughout the week at night so I like to get those workouts finished furing the day.

As for nutrition, lots of fresh fruit and vegtables, etc. You know the usual you have to eat right diet. But I like to supplement with Optinum Nutrition 100% whey and Opti men along with fish oil. I found that I feel better when I supplement with those supplements.

Geez, just looking at my post makes me tired. haha.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

I work out anytime from 3 to 4 times a week for about 2-3 hours. I go to the gym and do 30 minutes of cardio (20 on the elliptical machine and 10 running on the treadmill) and an hour of weight training. Then sometimes, if I'm up for it, I'll do an additional 30 minutes of swimming.

Earlier this year my dad just randomly bought me a gym membership so I feel wasteful if I don't go. I actually saw my skin and hair quality improving after exercising regularly and I toned up all around so I just keep going for my health now. But trust me, I'd rather sit on my ass at home staring at the TV than sweating with some smelly fat guy causing earthquakes on the treadmill next to me.

Unforutunately I don't have the metabolism to just eat whatever I wanted so I have eat pretty carefully. I still eat stuff I want but I try to stay away from fried foods and white starch since that stuff is bad for you anyways.

6'2'', 215 lb. I'm a bit fat, and would look much worse if I wasn't tall. I'd like to look attractive and feel good, but I just don't have the motivation to exercise. Being attractive is more than being in good shape, and I'm screwed in those other departments, anyway. So what's the point in trying?

I don't eat very much, but that doesn't help me lose any weight, which is frustrating. I'm gradually working my way towards being able to go a whole day without eating, though, just as an experiment, and maybe I'll do that a couple times a week when I get there. I'll see what happens.

I was speaking idiomatically.

I despise exercise, I really do.

But since being diagnosed with diabetes, I have begrudgingly tried to raise my activity level. Even for a Type I diabetic, exercise is essential; it helps to lower the insulin requirement, among other things.

I don't exercise much, but any exercise is a vast improvement over my former habits of ZERO exercise.

-I ride my bike to campus; this is a solid 20 minutes of exercise each way, a lot of it uphill.
-I take the stairs. This isn't hard, because I hate elevators; and lemme tell ya, jogging up 5 flights of stairs can really get the heart rate going.
-I walk or run a mile, occasionally... I try to a couple of times a week, but it's usually a sporadic thing.
-I clean house. I clean this lady's house once every two weeks or so, and it's a huge workout. It takes 4+ hours, and... well, many of you may not be used to cleaning, but it's quite the physical workout.
-I babysit. I always get a good workout when I babysit the 3-year-old twins that I adore. I run around with them, toss them in the air, and do some cleaning while I'm there. At 40 pounds each, it's like lifting weights for hours on end! I usually get home and flop on my bed, exhausted.

As for food, I'll be the first to admit that I eat very unhealthily. However, I have successfully made the switch from regular soda to diet, which must have cut a good 500 calories from my daily intake... Also, I've been forcing myself not to get fries when I eat out, or at least to get the tiny size.

This clearly isn't enough, though. I am 5'7" (joining the club) and 160 pounds. 'Tisn't enormous, but it's definitely too much. I would love to be 140... that is where I am comfortable. 130 would be my ultimate goal, but... let's not overdo it.

I'm 5'9'', 135 lb. which makes me underweight I guess (every one tells me I need to eat more). I don't have any exercise equipment, don't play any sports, and I'm way too cheap to get a gym membership, but I do try to workout at least 6 times a week, although I can't really think of a particular reason I do so other then a vague fear of becoming overweight (although I don't really I think I have to worry too much about that ).

My little "routine" that I put together consists 100% of just bodyweight exercises. What I do is after I come home from work or school, every hour I do:
- 5 handstand push-ups (feet against a wall, as I can't actually do a handstand)
- 5 "pistols" (one-legged bodywieght squats)
- 5 one-armed push-ups per arm
- 5 pull-ups (I go outside and find a tree for the pull-ups).
In addition to that, I do 30 calf raises and 15 V-ups, knee-hugs, russian twists, and knee to wrist curl-ups 6 days a week as well. I also try to run about two miles and stretch three times a week.

I don't really adhere to any diet, and pretty much eat whatever is at hand whenever I'm hungry, although I make a mild effort to avoid fast foods and sodas.

The great thing about bodyweight exercises is that the lighter you are the easier they are, so these are great for a lazy bum like me . However, I will admit that lifting weights is the best way to get big and strong, but I'm not really interested in that.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

5'8" and 147. Since freshmen year in high school I have gained 30 pounds and only one inch. So I've gone from being very skinny to reasonable. I am going ot be a college sophmore.

I have been doing track since high school. College track keeps me in good shape.

During the off season I:
- swim about 20 laps
- about 100-120 situps
- back extensions
- lift weights twice a week

I also try to eat healthy. I am a vegetarian so it is tough to get protein.

Let´s see: 198-200 pounds and 6´1¨. I MIGHT go down to 190, but anything below that and my bone frame will leave me looking ridiculous, I´ve been about 185 before.

Last year I was running track, playing handball, and doing massive calisthenics. Now just swimming and hitting the weight four times a week. I do half my body on Monday, the other half on Tuesday, rest on Wednesdays and repeat Thursday and Friday and rest the weekend. When I can complete the given amount of sets with the given amount of weight for the max reps of that routine (depends if I´m going light or heavy) I increase the weight by 2.5-5 pounds.

It´s hard to eat right in this country. The good stuff is rare and expensive. But I get by. I try to avoid sweets and chips and baked goods as much as possible, and drink nothing but tea and water. And milk in the morning. I quit soda altogether March of 2004.

I´ve been back in the gym only a month now, have kept the same bodyweight, but can notice the difference already (thank God for muscle memory). Even my clothes fit better.

It is hard as hell to eat right in this country. The good stuff is rare, expensive, and the wholesome foods take too long to cook and... you have to COOK them. The easiest thing i can make that's healthy are veggie burgers [I'm not a vegetarian and I don't even do it for health reasons, it just tastes good and you just put it in the microwave... easier than the george foreman grill (which btw is VERY easy nonetheless)]

It's really all will power. I remember how hard it was for me to resist fast food, shit liek KFC owned my soul. But it's nice how I have a shitload of KFC downstairs [rest of my family] and I didn't touch a single piece and kept to my Health Choice frozen dinners, which by the way ROCK! Chicken Tuscany, omg.

I never paid much attention to my caloric intake, because I always figured it was amazing since I read the nutritional labels wrong. I recently discovered serving sizes and was shocked to see how the ramen noodles [which I usually consume two of for a meal] had a serving size of 1/2 block of one packet. I was like "WTF!?" and realized my caloric calculations have been wrong for so long.

Serving sizes are really ridiculous, and it has taken me a while to get used to them but I'm starting to be able to live on them without passing out from famine.

I like eating food a lot, and I love different varieties of food, so sometimes I put the effort and money and get different kinds of things to enjoy. Powerbars and drinks were never my thing and I read some nasty stuff about them so I try to stay away.

I joined the gym in January and kept at a wimpy pace for much of the year. Until this summer when I started using deadweights and discovered a new machine to add to my workout everytime. Working out to me is like ironing, each time I go a little further and discover new limits and boundaries but I never forget to go back to where I started to make sure I get the full work-out.

I don't just want a 6 pack, I dont' just want an 8-pack for that matter, I want to be completely and utterly fit and I want to keep it up for life. I see people like AHNOLD, Stallone, and Van Damme [people who were like my childhood heroes] who are like pushing 60 and still making movies and still looking and feeling as great as ever, and it honestly inspires me to take the extra step and enjoy the verve of life.

It's hard though. It honestly is. I've never been one for routines, and it takes a lot of will power for me to stick to my regimen and take the right steps. Often when I don't have work or school I get up at like 1PM and just fuck around the entire day, and it's horrible. This entire "outlook" has somewhat recently dawned upon me and isn't very innate to me, but of course, I hope to change that.

...green tea kicks ass too.

I REALLY should be exercising more. I'm a Type I diabetic (like Blue) and, as she said, it helps to be fit to reduce the intake of insulin. Exercise is like one of the three pieces of the diabetic Triforce along with diet and insulin.

I literally do absolutely no physical activity everyday. Computer 24/7. Luckily, my body hasn't grown out of 'kid mode' yet and my metabolism is just nuts. I eat about 5 times a day and, for example, I eat about the equivalent of 3 - 4 cups of Raisin Bran at each meal. I eat pretty damn healthy, thanks to my mom.

I'm about 5'11" and 145lbs. I look quite skinny, and due to the lack of exercise, I'm pretty weak although I do have kind of bulgy arms. I notice I'm starting to gain a little weight here and there, but nothing compared to the amount I should dictated by how much I eat. :/ I'm trying to change my life around, and working out may find a way into my routine.I eat tons of protein and carbs all the time, and I hear that's like a bodybuilder's diet.

I wonder if my body will just go all-out 'Hulk' if I started lifting. ?

I never want an all-out Hulk body, in fact I don't want to really "bulk" up at all. People think that if they start lifting that they'll Hulk out overnight... it's fucking impossible even if you want it. It's a gradual process and involves a lot of mirror watching [trust me you will buy a mirror and masturbate to yourself if the results come out nice] and you'll be easily able to control where you go.

I just want a lean and fit body... anime-character stylezzz

I was speaking idiomatically.
The only way out is through.

20 minutes each day. I usually use those 8-minutes workout videos, preferrably the abs and arms ones. I work out in the morning right after I woke up because that also helps me to get awake without drinking too much coffee.

No, not really. In fact, I would say that I have a pretty much disastrous way of feeding upon something. I am a big fan of fast food and I'd rather eat four cheeseburgers instead of a healthy salad, yet I have slight underweight, which is great of course. I mean, I can eat whatever I want and won't become fat, that's not bad.

I used to be a tennis player. Nowadays, I just play football and some minor exciting sports like darts and bowling for fun.

Well that's a good question. Of course I want to stay fit and live in a rather healthy way, but sometimes, I think I could do much better. Instead of sitting in front of the computer for hours, I could run a few rounds around the block. I am happy that I am at least doing something, but it could definitely be better.

Oh and I'm 6'2" and 154 lbs which makes me slightly underweight, I guess.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

I exercise around half an hour a day, if I could. Mostly jogging on a treadmill. Then I do a few calisthenics like push ups, sit ups, etc. as part of my routine. Now during the summer, it's likely, but when I was actually doing work, I would come home a little late for exercising so I would just forego it. During school, I would really try for daily, if not, every other day. There were times when I would just shoot for weekly. XD

As for home, I already lost several lbs. over the summer. Mainly a good diet and moderate exercise will do. Heck, I especially believe in the power of food, so mayyybe no exercise is doable, but results would be slower. I've cut down significantly on unhealthy things, like ice cream (wahhh summer with no ice cream!) but instead of eating a few scoops I would limit myself to like 2 spoons twice a week or something ridiculous. All you need is the taste; not a cupful. Diet, to me, is very important. Especially my experience with freshman year of college, I literally got the freshman 15. That's because I just ate too much at the servery. =\ Still trying to downsize myself!

I don't normally play sports. Pretty sad. But I do play tennis and can be coerced to play soccer if there needs to be an extra member.

I think staying fit is very important. It really boosts your self esteem and having a goal during the summer at least gives you something to shoot for.

5'1" and 115 lbs. Back in school, I used to play basketball and racquetball a couple times a week. Then there were also intramural sports that I would join, namely soccer, basketball, and volleyball. I got to play ping-pong, ultimate frisbee, and dodgeball now and then. But as for running/lifting workouts, I didn't do any regularly. I think only twice in my four years of college did I run a few miles in the indoor track. And a few more times did I actually do any weight-lifting. I guess I just prefer training twitch muscles instead of doing repeated motions over and over again. Also, if you count breakdancing/DDR as some kind of fitness thing, I used to do a lot of that.

Now in my new job, I probably won't be able to get even that much activity anymore. There's an on-site gym here which I have yet to visit. Other than that, not much to do for exercise. The company has discoutns with various fitness programs, and I can see myself trying one out in the not-too-distant future.

For the past few years approaching summer, I've always aimed to work on my fitness during the summer. However after a few days it usually falls apart but this year I felt it was even more important I knuckled down and exercised more. I suffer from RSI and my health has not been the best over the past few years I am in my worst ever shape. I put on so much during the University semesters.

If it is good day then probably at least half hour spent doing football keepy ups, skipping rope, hooping. Sounds silly but I am building up gradually. My fitness is not too great usually when I do something I get cramp almost immediately. Once a week about I would play football probably for the most 2 hours. I need to get back to jogging but I haven't been able to stick to my schedule.

Not too much. There was a low point during last semester I was eating so much during studying but now I eat at the right times and I don't eat fat of the meat.

Well as I said I suffer from RSI. I'm hardly the outgoing type, the amount of times I would actually use my legs before then was almost nil, I would be on a computer all day. Now working into fitness makes me feel better, my RSI is not so severe, and I like to work a sweat. I need to think of more activities for myself to do though, during the winter it'll be wet and cold.
