Scutigera coleoptrata, big, ugly, and very fast.
I never have seen this bug before until resonantly. They are all over the basement and very fast. Are these creepy things deadly?
Here is a picture of one I found on the internet. ![]() Jam it back in, in the dark.

House centipedes are just scary looking. They rarely bite, and if they do, it's no worse than a bee sting (Wikipedia).
Just how many are in your basement? You may need to do some caulking and dehydration if it seems like a problem to you, as in general with any other insects that can invade the home, there has to be a way in and a reason why they would want to be inside, namely shelter and water/nourishment. But house centipedes are also great in getting rid of other insect pests as they are predators just like spiders. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I've got a 1024x768 picture of one as my desktop at work
![]() They've got poison claws, but as stated, they aren't deadly. And they're more afraid of you, than you (should) be of them. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
So far I've only seen three of this things.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
To be perfectly honest, if you know the scientific name of an animal, I find it hard to believe that you don't know if that same animal is dangerous.
Since your question has been answered anyway, I'll close this thread. I was speaking idiomatically. |
