I think everyone who owns a PSP can agree on the fact that the XMB interface is plain awesome. Not only is it incredibly slick, it also allows for insanely fast and intuitive navigation while using a minimal graphical overhead without the potential of distracting the user.
PS3 using the XMB interface is one of the best news so far. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
While I have no issues with the PSP or PS3 (Or any Sony one for that matter) interface in question, I have to mention that the 360's UI is hardly bloated garbage like Cetra seems to believe.
The Dashboard for the 360 is intuitive, simple, and easy to use. It's actually QUITE similar to the XMB interface. Major menu items are accessed through a horizontally scrolling menu. Sub items are accessed vertically from there. Both the PSP and 360 have customizable wallpapers. The PS3 looks like it has customizable and personal profiles, much like the 360 has. From a pure usability standpoint, they are both pretty fucking good, and actually quite similar. There might be technical differences and a different sort of system for dealing with buddies and such things, but the 360 solution to this is quite elegant and usable. I'd like to know why you think it's bloated garbage, Cetra. And the 360's Blade system has probably gotten just as much praise as the PSX's. It's hard to find people who don't like it. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I don't like the 360's blade system. It has too many redundant items. You can select "Game trailers" or "Media" to view the same content. You can access the same downloadable content through either the game's name or "latest game movies" or "trailers" or "demos" on the marketplace. It's excessive. What they needed was a simple "music/movies/games/options/internet" interface. That's it. I was speaking idiomatically. |
"Game Trailers" is a filter for the video content. Certain videos do not show up on that page that show up on the other Videos option. You want to look at just game trailers? That's what you pick. You want to view that addidas commercial you downloaded? That's under the "Videos" option.
The same goes for all the Live options, those are merely filters or methods for browsing through the content. You can search for stuff by game, genre, or how new the content is. With two button presses, I can find the newest items on Live. I don't have to find a game list and scroll through it, find a specific game and then check it to see if there is anything new there. The other options are similar. I can search for just gamerpics, if I want, or just new trailers, or what have you. These are nothing more than search parameters. I dunno about you, but being able to search a vast amount of content for something that I specifically want is pretty appealing, as opposed to having to go through it manually. But hey, why have convience, it's redundant, right? What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
PSP has folder-based convenience, smartass.

No kidding, Stealth. Good work missing the point.
Lemme spell it out for you. Having options that one can use to search for specific media is not a bad thing. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |

I don't mind the 360's blade-UI system, but there is one rather disturbing problem with it that neither the PSP nor, presumably, the PS3 will have -- when the UI is brought up during gameplay, the game doesn't frickin' pause. So there are these giant menus that fill up nearly half the screen in the middle of your gameplay, and that button's close enough to the rest of the controller layout to where it can be accidentally touched.
The PSP's UI, on the other hand, doesn't have that problem. It can't be accessed during gameplay without leaving the game itself, which is a damn good thing -- I don't think I'll be needing to view movies or listen to music while I'm playing my game. However, you can access it while watching a movie....and the movie pauses. Dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuun. I suspect the PS3 will have similar features. Jam it back in, in the dark. Not true, it does pause just not in multiplayer games OF COURSE.
There's nowhere I can't reach. |

What? I've watched people lose rounds of Fight Night Round 3 because someone hit that 360 button. They lose because the game is still in-progress when those blades come up.

I think it's down to the games, not the machine. Most games pause when the 360 button is hit, others don't under certain criteria. Hitman: Blood Money, for exampel, doesn't if your looking at the map while pressing 360.
I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? ![]() |
Yeah then its simply the developers being lazy and not executing the pause game button when the ring of light is pressed, just in the way the pause game button pauses the game lol. I can't recall one of my games which does not.
I was speaking idiomatically. |
The Xbox 360 Blade UI is actually pretty good, but it isn't nowhere as easy and intuitive to handle as PSP's XMB. It takes a while to really get used to it and not be confused by the seemingly redundant blade menu eye candy. The 360's UI also takes up the whole screen whereas the XMB is much less intrusive and offers its entire functionality with the game/video/photos/browser/whatever still visible/running in the background.
I just like simplicity and minimalism, so I personally prefer the XMB. Though I'm not interested in getting a PS3 at launch, I can't wait to see its full implementation on the console. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Looks like Sony is giving Resistence: Fall of Man the most attention of the launch games.
Interesting. While Resistence was one of the launch games I was interested in, I'm still reserved on making it the priority game considering it's an FPS. For a look at what next-gen can do, I was leaning toward games like Lair, Heavenly Sword, or Assasin's Creed. FPS games can always cut corners. FELIPE NO ![]() |
Sony's gotta choose something to make a killer app out of. As long as they make people believe Resistance is greater than Christ, people will see it as validating a PS3 purchase.
How ya doing, buddy? |
So then, PS3 is only months away from purchase. Yet, where are all of the pre-orders? I've been waiting for EBgames/GameStop to come out with one, but I'm left hanging in the dust. What is the deal?
Jam it back in, in the dark.
Love it.

I don't know if the other Gamestops/EBs are doing that as well, or just ones in the area, or everywhere. But the manager there even told me months ago that they'd be very unlikely to take pre-orders. I'd have to imagine it'd be due to the precedent set by the 360 launch. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
Last I checked, my Gamestop was taking pre-orders, but I'm still deciding which store is the best place to reserve it. There are some factors to consider, like which store will offer the best bonus (if any), which ones offer the best warranty (for $600, you'd better be able to replace it if it breaks without any hassle), and so on.

Nobody's taking reservations at EB Games or Gamestop. If they are, I'd advise not doing it.
The official word we've received from the upper management is that EB/Gamestop will not be taking pre-orders on the PS3 (and most likely the Wii) until after the Manager's Conference, which won't end until late October. The reason for this lies in part with what happened during the 360 launch. Microsoft told us we would be getting so many units, and to allocate those to individual regions, then districts, and lastly the stores themselves. But, just a week before launch, we were informed that the majority of stores were getting less than half of what they were promised. This year, EB/Gamestop will not be taking any crap from customers. I was more than pissed off at the number of people who blamed me for Microsoft's failure to launch the number of consoles they promised us. So now the company's retaliation is to not take any reservations (and that includes making a call list) for the system until we have it triple-confirmed by Sony that this company is getting X number of units, period. Now, for those of you who believe the stores are taking pre-orders -- it's impossible. At the most, they're making a call list (which the company already frowns on) for when the pre-orders become available. Why is this impossible? Because we don't even have the damn SKU number for the pre-order yet. Thus, it's impossible. We're taking reservations on PS3 and Wii games, but not their systems. Questions? Nope.
Thanks a lot for completely clarifying though. I was wondering what the hell was going on. I was speaking idiomatically.
Love it.

SouthJag pretty much covered it. But I also heard a rumor of *if* EBGames is going to be stocking the PS3. I doubt it is true in anyway, but still, is is out there.
As for me and the PS3, if I get it, it will probably be for Assasin's Creed. I read about it and it looks interesting. Finally something that has not been done before. Or if it has, I do not know about it. But after seeing how well Oblivion came out(which I have yet to play T_T) I have a little more faith in the Next-Gen game creation peeps out there. What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
I forgot my old sig...

Well, it is appearant in my signature, but I'm getting it launch day for two reasons; to have a PS3, and make all my friends think I'm insane, and then if there is a shortage, to sell it on eBay for a million dollars.
That and oh, I don't know Metal Gear Solid 4.... How ya doing, buddy?
Love it.
|
Screw Metal Gear Solid. I want my Armored Core 4! Fear the armored core fanboy!
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
I forgot my old sig...
|
I could go for another Armoured Core game myself, as long as it's better then Nine Breaker and Last Raven... Silent Line was ok.
The reason why I'm getting a PS3 though is for MGS4, Tekken 6, Devil May Cry 4, Final Fantasy XIII, God of War 3 (much later though), and about ten-thousand other games I can't remember at this moment. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
MGS4 and Ace Combat 6, damn nuggets. You know it's coming.
How ya doing, buddy? ![]() |
Honestly, I'll be picking up a PS3 because I have yet to be let down by Sony. I know - I'm a mindless Sony fanboy. I admit it. Oh. And for MGS4/FFXIII/DMC4/RE5. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. ![]() |
