Ripping DVD Movies to iPod Video
Alright, I bought a 60 gig iPod Video yesterday, and I wanna put a few of my favorite movies on it. The question is: What's the best way to do that?
I'm mostly interested in ripping my DVDs to my computer, and then converting them to .m4v files or the best kind of video filetype that iPod videos support. I don't really know if there is an efficient utility for ripping movies straight to an iPod video capable file type, but that's why I'm asking. (Also, to be honest, I don't have much experience ripping DVDs to my computer, because I never really had the need until now, so any tips on that would be greatly appreciated as well.) EDIT: CRAP - Multiple windows open leads me to posting my thread in the wrong forum. Please move this to Help Desk. The report button is gone. How ya doing, buddy? |
There is no *GREAT* way to do it. But I HIGHLY recommend you use three programs.
DVD FabDecrypter - For ripping the DVD to your hard drive. DGIndex - This program you will use to make an info file about the DVD *.VOB files you select. This info (.d2v) file can be read by MeGUI (with its AviSynth Script Creator). AviSynth (also needs to be installed on your system, though you won't "use" it). MeGUI - This is the program that makes the MP4 file that your iPod can read. It has a x264 preset for iPod output. You will need to allow MeGUI to update itself so that you have all the stuff you need. This has to be the easiest, most efficient, and highquality way to do what you want. You will probably have to scour the forums at http://forum.doom9.org for more specifics, however, I can help you with some. I have made iPod compatible clips this way -> here <- and you can try to upload it to your Pod to verify. Anyway, PM me or post here with questions ASSUMING you use the above programs and try to jump right in and figure it out. I'm not gonna babystep you the whole way ![]() Just found this << http://www.project357.com/MeGUIwiki/...nversion_Guide >> It's a good place to famliarize yourself. They recommend using DVDDecrypter which is great. But it does have problems with decrypting some newer DVD's which is why I recommend DVDFab Decrypter and using DGIndex. I'd rather learn one way that works with everything, different ways that work some of the time. There's nowhere I can't reach. ~ Ready To Strike ~ :Currently Playing: League Of Legends(PC), Skyrim(PC), Golden Sun: Lost Age(GBA), Twilight Princess(Wii), Portal2(PC), Dragon Warrior II(NES), Metroid Prime 2: Echoes(GC)

I was speaking idiomatically. |
I personally prefer finding a legacy version of DVDDecrypter and going from there as the ripping app. I used the trial of PSPWare for a while, but then I ended up getting Nero 7 instead.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
If you're on a mac the best way to do it is with HandBrake, the single best H.264 Encoder on the planet :-D You can find it on versiontracker.
