If you like platformers and action games get the Ratchet and Clank titles. Even if you don't, buy them anyway, feed the evil sony machine. Make sure to play them in order or you won't get full enjoyment out of them. And listen to the soundtracks. The Jak games aren't as good and they focus alot less on action than the Ratchet titles, but the two franchises are always getting compared and I hear everyone else likes the Jak series (I personally don't care for it all that much).
Devil May Cry is a good way to kill a weekend, just don't get Devil May Cry 2. Since you like Ape Escape I would definitely recommend Ape Escape 3, it improves on the formula from the first game without all the crap from Ape Escape 2 (do not get Ape Escape 2, it sucks). I always recommend R-Type Final, and it's less than 20 bucks so you might as well give it a shot.

As for your question about would you like Chrono Cross since you liked Chrono Trigger. That's hard to answer, the combat really isn't all that similar. Also alot of Chono Trigger fans consider what they did to the CT characters in it a bastardization.
Seriously though if you can find a copy of Star Ocean: Second Story for a decent price get it. The combat has abit of an action twist to it and it's a nice change of pace from the usual stuff you do in Final Fantasy. Plus there are lots of different endings depending one what characters you manage to pair up together. You can pair up any 2 characters you want as long as they can be in the party together (Either romantically or friendship, depends on the characters in question). It's up there with Valkyrie Profile in my personal favorites. If you want to play an action game where you take on swarm after swarm of troops, you might want to check out the Dynasty Warriors games. Obviously just skip to the most recent ones if you do. There are alot of people that complain that the series doesn't move forward enough with each release, but then there are people like me and my friends who can't get enough of it. This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
As for games... I definitely say try out the Onimusha series, they're set in more of the action horror genre. Great series if you like samurai games and hack n' slashers. Heh, and like Qwarky said get Genji if you end up liking Onimusha. Zone of the Enders is another great series, fast paced robot action. ZOE2 I highly suggest, the gameplay is just outstanding, so much goes on the screen at once. For the Metal Gear Solid series, definitely start with one as Qwarky mentioned already. If you're looking to get MGS2, look out for MGS2 Substance (it's like the director's cut), it's got more play value than Sons of Liberty. Castlevania series is pretty fun too, another action series with some RPG elements to it (well the PS2 games anyway). Really minimal things though. There's two games for the PS2, "Lament of Innocence" and "Curse of Darkness." I'd say get LoI first, as that's most likely the cheaper one. Also, if you end up liking Devil May Cry, you might wanna try Chaos Legion. The gameplay is pretty fun, you summon and command a legion of warriors to do/aid your fighting. I think the real highlight in this game is it's kick ass soundtrack by Hideyuki Fukasawa. For RPGs, try out the Xenosaga series, it's got a pretty interesting storyline with a pretty fun battle system. Episode III should be coming out sometime before the end of the year I believe. The first 2 episodes should be dirt cheap now, last time I saw Xeno2 at EB it was going for $20-30. RPG on PS1... definitely pick up Chrono Cross, awesome game. Heh, while you're at it, you may as well pick up Chrono Trigger. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I'd recommend some PS1 games if you're going that route.
Final Fantasy Tactics - The best of the series. Chrono Cross - An excellent game, far different than Chrono Trigger, but far better, and pretty much the best music in a game to date. Street Fighter Alpha 3 - For classic beat-em-up action Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - THE Castlevania game to get. It destroys all others. Valkyerie Profile - I don't think it's the best, as russ believes, but it is a damn fine game, and if you're lucky enough to find one, go for it. Suikoden 1 - Great game, and fun too. For PS2 games Disgaea - a strategy RPG with great humour. Armored Core 2 and up - if you like fast paced action shooters, this series is great, with tons of customizability. Devil May Cry 1 and 3 - Great games, fast paced action and superb from start to finish. God of War - the best action game made yet. X-Men Legends 1 and 2 - Diablo-style RPG with the X-Men and guests! Dragon Warrior 8 - the best classic console style RPG made yet. Soul Calibur 3 - You can make your own character to fight with, plus it has nearly every character in all of the games. (I'm still bitter that they created Olcadon instead of bringing back Edgemaster though...) Guitar Hero - If you've ever dreamed of playing a guitar, but are too lazy to learn, or if you just want to listen to some classic rock while looking cool doing it, I cannot recommend this game enough. If you are neither then I would think you are kinda "funny", and not funny "ha ha"... ![]() and by the way, stay away from Final Fantasy X unless you want to be turned off from Square forever. That should do you for now. Most amazing jew boots |
I am a huge Final Fantasy Fan, so every Final Fantasy before Final Fantasy X warrants a purchase from me, They're all damn fun, but I dunno about Final Fantasy X, never owned a PS2. But yes, Final Fantasy I - IX are all good, assuming you're not completely anal about graphics. And for the record: Final Fantasy I has got to be one of the HARDEST RPGs I've ever played.....at least after beating everything else.
But other PS1 games, Legend of Mana is a nice game you could go for, it's kinda like Seiken Densetsu 3 if you've played that. If you haven't, well, I dunno, it's like a third person hack-n-slash with RPG elements. That's about it for new stuff. So all in all.... Final Fantasy Origins (I and II) Final Fantasy Chronicles (IV and Chrono Trigger) Final Fanatsy Anthology (V and VI) Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy Tactics Legend of Mana Be warned, the load times on IV, V, and VI are horrendous. If you have an SNES, you'd be better served with the SNES original. (except V which was never released Stateside) What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |

Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil is a fun platformer that I always have to whore out to people buying PS2s. Even my macho friends who can't stand the colorful, bright games ended up liking it. I hadn't heard of Klonoa before that and wasn't too interested when my mom brought it home but once I started playing, I couldn't stop. The 2d-ish level designs are neat, I like the way the camera follows you. I like the gameplay too, it's...fluid. Somewhat challenging to collect all the gems in the game but fun to try...I found it easier than trying to get all the gems in Mischief Makers, anyway. Great soundtrack, too.

Does Tool E let you close the PSTwo? Tool C apparantly doesn't, and I don't want to open the slimline without having to. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
As for FFVII, well it was engaging enough for me during Midgar already, but yes, it does get better once you get out into the world. Although I'm not quite sure how it plays on the PC, I've generally tried to stay away from Square's PC ports as they've not been that great. Most amazing jew boots ![]() |
No one said Psychonauts. Shame.
Unless you already have an alternative version, of which you will share the love of this game. Most amazing jew boots ![]() |
Bought my PS2 finally, I have bought Devil May Cry 3, and God of War with it. The ass-hat I was supposed to buy it from never called back so I just went to the store and bought it new. I ended up paying about $50 than I would have, no big loss.
I will leave this open in case there are other must have games that someone may want to recomend Double Post:

I highly recommend Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, if you can find it that is. Not only is it one of the hardest RPGs ever, it's pretty damn creative and fun to play. Just watch out for that matador... One of the best RPGs on PS2. Actually, it is the best. Followed closely in second by Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2. Grab those too if you can find them. *end ATLUS plug*
I was speaking idiomatically. |
