Pick a version (just a style; doesn't matter), then go to the Contest section.

Original post as follows:

This is still a few weeks off, but I wanted to make record of this now. Anyway, this is a contest in a similar vein to the VGMQ. I found out about last year's Mayn Event tournament two days before the deadline and I managed to come in third place. Though I thought that was cool, hopefully I can get some stronger competition this time around, and that's where you guys come in. It's a fun contest, so check it out.

Is this the thing that you said had a lot of fighting game music in it?

If so, I automatically fail. I'm still joining.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Yeah, I'd say roughly around 1/3 of the tracks from the last contest were from fighting games, given that the site is actually dedicated to fighting game tournaments. Regardless, that didn't stop me from snagging third place. I think GoldfishX should enter this year. He seems to know a good amount of fighting game music.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

If I wasn't so pressed for time to complete my thesis, I might just take part for the fun of it. But past experience with similar events suggests that I'll porbably end up somewhere near the bottom rung. Especially if a good proportion of the tunes are from fighting games.

Cool, I enjoy stuff like this. Though if it's mostly fighting game music, I'll do poorly, since I generally don't play fighting games.

I was speaking idiomatically.
Check out my original music at my Soundcloud page!

Latest music rips (updated January 10, 2012):

SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

First post updated.

This started a month ago, apparently, but I didn't start participating until today. However, only the first 30/120 tracks are unlocked at this time anyway, and the contest lasts until next month, so there's still plenty of time left.

Is it just me, or are a lot of the music selections damn good? I want to know the answers just so I can go hunt down the soundtracks.

You can imagine me kicking myself when I didn't participate last year and I knew so many of the tracks when they were announced. Not saying I would've won, but it would've been interesting...

So far...I agree...Even the ones I'm not getting are nice listens. Have to see how those huge scoring ones play out to get an idea of how good I'm doing.

Interesting, interesting...
sho far, I seem to know most of them (too bad there aren't many up yet...).
Sadly, I might not be able to participate. The rules... hidden tracks, trick tracks... this seems quite fun!

Man, I just listened to the first 60 and only got 9. There were also a few that I recognized but couldn't remember.

I only got the most recognizable stuff. :-/

The contest is free entry. Simply use the e-mail on the contest page. That same e-mail is also on the 'Contacts' section.

All I need is a nickname, six characters max. If you win, I will need address info to write out a check to you.

And yes, all you need is the game title.

Tunes 71-80 are up as of now. Due date may be extended till the 20th of June. That gives people time to find the hidden stuff and what not.

For those keeping track, 3 things:

Tracks 71-80 are online

Tracks 81-90 will be up on Monday. Even though it is Memorial Day, the contest tunes will still be uploaded as scheduled.

For those who want additional updates from what I post here, there is now a subscription page availabe for future updates.

Thanks a lot, and hope that everyone has a good holiday weekend.

Hello Again,

I'm here to put up a long awaited update of my music contest, which started shortly after my tournament back in May. As of now, ALL of the tracks are released. All that's left are the Hidden Songs, which are available as well. That's a total of 125 songs to choose from!

Currently in first (subtotal wise) is NXS from SRK, followed by 198One from Soundtrack Central, and Todd (unknown)

29800pts - NXS
23800pts - 198One
08300pts - Todd

This is subject to change, and I received a batch of answers that will radically change some scores around.

----------------------------

Here is a recent question I received:

> Hello! I am submitting an entry for the tune contest with some guesses.
> I would like to go by the name "RDan" in the standings list.
>
> Also, a couple quick questions: If I guess wrong, am I allowed to make
> another guess? And if so, how many times can I do this? Also, songs
> that subtract points as a first guess bonus, are those only if guessed
> wrong? Also, is anything lost on an incorrect hidden song guess?
> Finally, can I go back and guess a song is fan made even after
> guessing the game it's from?
>

--You can make as many guesses as you choose, as long as you don't make
multiple guesses per submission.

--To promote more educated guesses and less spam, the negative points and
multiplication was put into effect. You are correct: if your guess is
INITIALLY wrong, you are subject to losing points from your subtotal at
the end of the contest. Likewise, + values add on an initial correct
guess. The only cumulative penaties is guessing wrong on Fan Songs and the
Booby Trap Song.

--Points won't be lost off a hidden song. The challenge moreso is to find
the song. Only Track E is the challenging one. Also, the hidden tracks are
only valued based on the foundation of your correct guesses.

So if I guess Hidden Song E correctly, and have 200 points, it's only
worth 100 points...the ends don't justify the means. However, if I have
32000 points, it's worth 16000. Correct Hidden Songs are
cumulative...meaning I can multiply my subtotal by 1.1 and then THAT total
by 1.x

So...if I guessed B, C, and E correctly with again 32000...

32000 x 1.2 = 38400
38400 x 1.3 = 49920
49920 x 1.5 = 74880

And with a matter of 3 songs, my score has more than doubled. That is
where the genius of the point system comes in. Look at the rules (or
download them) to find out the final analysis when the contest ends.

--You can correctly guess a title and return to submit the Fan Song Guess.
It's also possible to submit a correct answer and get the Fan Song Guess
WRONG. It has been done...so be careful: 250 points lost for each wrong
Fan Guess.

----------------------------

One more week to go!

Just a reminder, the last day of the contest is SUNDAY.

Between Midnight and 3AM EST, I will be online taking last minute entries. Please look at the current high scores to see what you have to beat to get to first. Good Luck!

PS: If you send your answers between now and Sunday afternoon, I will NOT tally your points, but I will tell you your incorrect answers. That way you'll have time to correct them in time for the deadline.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Congratulations to Nothingxs, who wins the Music Contest once again.

Meanwhile, go to mayn-event.com for the answers. There you will find:
--The location of the Hidden Songs
--Which songs are Fan Arrangements
--The Booby Trap Song, and where it's from
--Bonus Stuff
--Answers to all tunes 1 thru 120, A thru E.

Thanks for participating.

I think I got 5th place, but we'll see. I didn't do bad, but not as good as last time. I'm surprised that I missed out on on a few really obvious ones. Aw well, maybe I'll do better next year.

Also, congrats on stumping me with track 049. I knew it had to be some other version of SMB2, but I had no idea that Doki Doki Panic's music was any different. I figured it would have just been all the same.

I have a question about track 106 though. It sounds exactly like a track from the album BROKEN THUNDER -project Thunder Force VI-, except slightly longer. How is this a fan mix? Is Broken Thunder a doujin album?

There are 5 Fan Songs total. The actual versions of the Fan Songs are on the answer list as links. 106 is an advanced midi version...once you download the actual track, compare the two and you'll hear the differences.
