First Experience Driving
For those of you who drive, what was your learning experience like? Any interesting stories to share?
I drove a car when I was about 14 and spent the year practicing before attending driver's education. I drove around my neighborhood at night, so when I finally went during the day, driving was easier. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
When I had my temp permit, I learned by driving around the block with one of my parents. Just kind of getting the hang of turning and braking and that kind of thing. After about the third or fourth time going around in the same circle, one man whose house I had just passed screamed nice and loud:
GET THE FUCK OUTTA THE NEIGHBORHOOD!! There's nowhere I can't reach. |
i drove half way home from the permit place. i was pretty terrible then so i drove around an empty buisness district and got better.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
The first time I went driving, I tried to turn without slowing down, as I thought that I only needed to take my foot off the accelerator to slow down. I ended up about an inch from a lamp post, and my dad immediately drove me home. He refused to drive with me until I had a couple sessions with my instructor.

HOWEVER, I got lost AGAIN a couple days later. Somehow, I ended up doing a turnabout on the SAME driveway in the same slow, suspicious manner. As soon as I turned into it, I realized that I've been there before. Well, guess who was just stepping out of the house? Spoiler:
Anyways, he proceeded to yell and scream, and I drove away as quickly as possible. ![]() I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I think I did pretty well to be honest; the car moved about 3 foot. Well, I say moved; I stalled it while we were not moving and it jumped. We were in a carpark on a busy saturday in broad daylight too, and I was only 13 at the time.

hehe in driver's education i almost killed my passengers by driving full on into a huge boulder!
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
My real first experience was doing a burnout in my father's old built chevy C10...then i took the Civic around the block a few times and went to get my license. Passed the test too, surprisingly.
FELIPE NO ![]() While everyone around me is busy drowning, I float.

When I was 15 in North Carolina, you could take a huge written test (like 300 questions) on a weekend, and if you passed that, you only had to take 3 days of driver's ed. The driver's ed was nothing but getting in the car and driving around town.
It was very confusing at first, because I had never driven before, and suddenly, I'm behind the wheel and the instructor is telling me to head out on the highway. That's right, no time on the driving range, just straight into traffic. I did alright (except for that one time where I confused the gas with the brake), but it's amazing they didn't have more accidents. Maybe they did, since the test is no longer an option, and everyone has to take driver's ed. What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
How won't I remember my first time? I hydroplaned after 15 minutes of driving. Other than that, nothing much but it is quite fun!

It took me awhile to actually start driving after I got my permit. I was 15 I think and I drove my mom to the store. It was the first time I had actually been behind the wheel of a vehicle and I underestimated the pressure sensitivity of the acceleration pedal.
Nothing really exciting happened. My mother just got home quicker than she was used to. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
First time was around last year in July. I passed my written test on the second attempt, so a couple of days later I tried to practice in our narrowly confined underground parking complex. It consisted of "drive" and "reverse" without turning. Oh man, the "reverse" part was disastrous! I never knew that the car goes by itself even if you don't press the accelerator, so I reversed and drove much faster than I desired. My dad and I were screaming our heads off at each other, both out of anger. I didn't bother to attempt driving again for a while, where I moved into a nice spacious parking lot a couple of weeks after.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
My first time driving I was 12 and my uncle let me drive his rental car. He always got the insurance on those things and never cared what happened, so I took it for a drive around the block and it was fun ^^ I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
My mom took me to the local mall afterhours and I nearly ran over a cat.

I don't so much remember my first driving experience, however I remember the first time driving on I-75 in Michigan. To make it short and sweet, my hands were numb for a little while after all was said and done.
How ya doing, buddy?
I am myself. You can't change me. I am who I am.

I just got my liscense and now I have to learn to drive a stick. It is living hell and nowhere near as smooth as an auto. Fucking clutch. Stalling in the middle of an intersection is unpleasant.
FELIPE NO |
I would have been no more than 5 years old when i had my first driving experience.
It involved me sitting on my uncles lap holding the steering wheel while he drove up and down the quiet street my nana lives on. I'm sure at the time i thought i was the bomb. Most amazing jew boots |
Can't really say anything interesting. Mainly a high school parking lot, my dad in the passenger's seat, and me behind the wheel, with my dad firing off things that I've forgotten to pay attention to.
Jam it back in, in the dark. |
Let's see, wheelspun the start so my mother's nerves were shot from the start. Kept on the speed limit for the most part but going round a quiet corner towards a farm, my co-driver panicked and shouted 'break! break! break!' thus causing me to panic and hit the accelerator instead...
Nobody was injured, barring the car's bonnet. Thankfully a hedge was on the recieving end and not another car nor a wall... or a person. There's nowhere I can't reach. ![]() "Non-nerdish people are BORING. It's all babies and shoes and kids and cricket." |
I have my L. My driving instructor thought it would be a good idea to learn how to cross intersections first, learn how to turn second, then got tired of me and told me to get some practice, I havn't seen him since. The first day hes like "ok go right, now left, right, NOW LEFT AT THIS INTERSECTION, GO, GO!!!!!! That freaked me out a bit since I only had been driving 5 minutes at the time, then he thought we'd better practice some more turning so he told me to go down this long windy road with a speed limit of 80. I wasn't even comfortable driving slow... The worst part of it is he smells really bad, he smells like the combination of cigarette smoke, and old people. I am not looking forward to finishing my leasons!
I thought it would be worth mentioning that my mom just witnessed a cute fluffy kitty get flattened under the weight of the van in front of her *SQUISH* ![]() This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
The only thing I particularly remember from learning to drive is that the first instructor I had, and who was changed after the first lesson, was a right bastard. I was taking my first lesson towards the end of a school day when I had no lessons, I said to the instructor that I'd like to avoid going near the school as a) it was not a nice area to drive as there was some awkward roads and b) it'd only make me nervous, but even so the git made me go down there anyway during peak traffic time and as everyone was leaving. I wanted to punch him in the face after that.
Once I changed instructors it was a pretty uneventful process and 13 lessons later I had a licence. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
I was eleven when my brother let me have a shot at driving his Series 2A land rover 'round a field. I haven't driven a car since, but these days I dart around the French countryside on an old Vespa.

I remember backing into someones garbage bins when I was learning to drive, I thought it was pretty funny, probably because my driving instructor almost shit his pants. I TOLD HIM THERE WERE BINS BEHIND US, but nooo, keep reversing anyway! Not too long after getting my license, I was nearly wiped out by a bus. That was also kinda funny, but in the horrifying you almost died kind of way. That was like what, six years ago or something. I've never driven since. It's probably for the best!
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Well, well.
My first experience of actual street driving was terrible. I kept making mistake after mistake that I kept cursing to myself, wondering how come I'm so darn stupid. Luckily nobody got hurt. ^^ FELIPE NO ![]() |
I started out as a crappy driver. I barely got my Driver's liscense in January of this year. I'm a bit better at driving compared to when i first started, but I'd still say I am I crappy driver.
What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? ![]() |
My first experience driving was right after I got my permit with my father. I had to drive the stationwagon which we owned at the time. The car always had the tendency to automatically steer slightly to the right, so it was very difficult for me to get the hang of it.
My best experience came when I took a 5-hour driving lesson in Colorado, a place with roads I was completely unfamiliar with. Jam it back in, in the dark. ![]() |
