Final Fantasy XI - which version?

M'kay, newb FFXI question here. I think I'm finally ready to buy it with my new, faster computer. So which version should I buy, which in a way is asking, which is the latest version. Oh, and are there any advantages of owning an older version instead of a newer?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

You need to buy Final Fantasy XI Online Vana'diel Collection. For 20 dollars you get the full game plus 2 expansion packs with it. If you really get into the game then you can spend another 30 dollars on the newer expansion.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

You are essentially forced to buy the first two expansions, Rise of the Zilart and Chains of Promethia, which as Miles stated now comes with the core game. You can hold off on buying the new expanion Treasures of Aht Urghtan (sp) since most of the stuff that comes with that expansion is pretty much useless for you, assuming you are starting from scratch.

When you get around level 30 or when you make friends who all wanna hang out in the new areas, then you can then decide to purchase it.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

oh and you probably have one, but make sure you have a DVD-drive because vana'diel collection is DVD only. You don't know how many time I saw someone claim that the collection edition are broken because of they can't get they computer to read the disk when they don't have a dvd-drive >.>

It's on DVD? I'd take that over the 4 cds that came with my original version. *install play online* *insert disc 1* *instert disc 2* insert disc 3* *insert disc 1 again for no reason* *now you can insert disc 4* .__.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Getting the pack will probably save you from hours of update time, even on cable it still takes a while (just starting anyway).
