Monster Hunter: Freedom

I just picked up this game for my PSP yesterday with a friend. I haven't tried the PS2 version before, so I figured I would give this one a try to see why Japanese players like it so much.

So far I'm not sure if I like the game very much. Right now I'm doing the beginners quests to get the hang of things. I just completed my first hunting quest which was a nice break from all the item collecting, but now I'm back to hunting special mushrooms. I am a bit sad by the lack of online play. It couldn't be THAT hard to run a server that allowed us to play on through our router or something. Being limited to 30 feet in order to play is kinda lame and makes me wish I had the PS2 version just to see what I'm missing out on.

As for all the weapons, they all seem pretty slow to me except for the hunting knife. The huge sword swings WAAAY too slow. The gun weapon is annoying to switch to FPS mode on and reload with. The lance is kinda neat with the charge and high and low attacks, but the hunting knife wins for combos. I'm hoping you can learn more besides the basic attacks since they already seem to be getting a bit repetitive.

I'll give the game at least 10 or so hours before I decide if I completely dislike it or not. I'll also give it a whirl with my friend next time we go to the gym. I just hope there are a more variety of attacks and moves to keep the game interesting.

How ya doing, buddy?

I love it for:

-The graphics (excellent for PSP)
-Customization (armor and weapons)
-Long-term play (so many quests to do, items to combine and experiment with, upgrade the farm in town)

I don't mind it being offline. Because of that, Capcom focused more on the single player gameplay, and it's somehow more fun than the PS2 Monster Hunter.

Don't worry about the weapons, I'm sticking with Sword & Shield for a while, too.

I'm trying to take the upgrade path to a Poison Battleaxe (I've heard this is a good path for a beginner to take).

Here's a link to the chart (Check the Swords Guide near the bottom):
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/game/914914.html

There's nowhere I can't reach.

This lets you play online, sort of. Good luck setting it up, however. It basically tricks your PSP into thinking it's connecting to other PSP's with adhoc mode.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

If you haven't done it already, win the little pig's affection by talking to it when it walks with that seller of books, and when the exclamation mark appears hit X, it should be your little friend now and will move into your house.

If you do this everytime before you go on a quest your chances of getting more items and possibly better items for your reward is increased.

I couldn't think of anyone who uses XLink Kai so I never bothered with it, but it would be nice to play with people online.

Yeah, I always do that.

If anyone's having any trouble with timing the steaks or pig music, just wait 3 beats after the song ends (press X on the third beat).

You won't even have to look at the screen, it'll always work.

Have you tried it? I was always wondering how the lag is on xlink. If it's good I'll probably try it out for Tekken.

So what weapons are we all using or planning to get?

I'm messing around with a Spiked Spear now, after hunting the Iron Ores to get to the Bone Javelin + and getting the last Machelite Ore for Spiked Spear, it appears that it isn't the final form now in MH:F. Next upgrade is a Dark Lance... requires some Hornetaur Heads, Hornet Bladefins (ugh) and Stun Sacs, in exchange for no green sharpness, but absolute paralysis when striking. It also boosts a hefty 368 attack instead of the 276 I am using right now, so maybe it'll be okay.

They are pretty good weapons, but sidestepping instead of rolling can be bad.

Someday I'll figure out how to get duals to not suck and use those too.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Don't get quests from the Hall (those are harder multi-player quests), get them from the old guy outside of the building (normal single player quests).

The first tutorial missions should teach you all you need to know, as long as you read the chief's notes.

Also, I'd recommend using Sword and Shield, much easier to handle than any other starting weapon.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Loved the PS2 version and am tempted to get this. Load times acceptable?

well i don,t know how the ps2 version work, but the load that are acceptable (not best though) the bigest are when you load your game and entering the village. In a quest the map are divided in zone and the load time between each zone is kind of fast(It doesn't bother me) it's just when you enter or leave a quest that the loading for the village take some time...

and for now i just love the game! I tried most of the weapon and I love great sword! yep they slow but I'm getting the hang of it and really enjoy it. I like how you feel so powerful with those XD

btw when will I see this little pig? well i just recently finish the "first hunting quest" so I at the beggining of the game and now I do this hunting quest constently to get some money for better armor because just the next mission after that is really hard...

I was speaking idiomatically.

The little piggy shows up a bit later, after you've completed the one-star quests provided by the village elder if I remember correctly. (Total of 8 quests plus 1 urgent?)

The game is pretty cool. I haven't played MH on the PS2 but heard about MHF from a friend and just decided to get it. Finding materials and upgrading your armor and weapons is pretty interesting, thanks to the many different combinations you can make. You can also categorize different equipment sets for different needs. The best is, of course, the ad-hoc mode. Nothing beats having 2 or 3 friends over and going on a quest together. 4 hunters beating up a poor Yian Kut-ku? Priceless....

At the moment, I'm alternating between the Bonespike+ (sns) and the Iron Katana "Grace" (gs). Still trying to collect enough machalite ores and earth crystals to upgrade to an Iron Katana "Gospel". The green edge to the sword's sharpness should be pretty handy against wyverns. For the sns, may decide to upgrade to the Corona since it comes with the fire attribute.

What's everyone else using?

I've been playing it for about 3 or 4 months, maybe more. i've never played with others, and im working on getting x-link. I've been soloing the multi-player quests, to get monster bone +'s, and i have the babel spear, and i have the deadly battle axe, along with the corpse blades.

for great swords i have the greater serphant blade, and the eager cleaver+.

I love this game. i play it all the time ^_^ my armor is Soul Rathalos armor.

i agree that the load times are killingly long =\

Also (edit) the lance is my favorite weapon, the back step is actually a large advantage. because it keeps you in range of the wyvern, so you can juggle its head (juggling is when you attack a monsters head, and make it flinch, over and over) but far enough away that you dont get hit. Also, it side steps, if you aim it to the side. Its great against wyverns, but not against smaller monsters like vespoid, and other creatures. i suggest swords and shields until you hit 4 star, but, its ultimatly your choice.

i've beaten all of the offline quests (there are 6 *'s, to unlock the 6th * quests, you have to clear stars 1-5) and soloing the multiplayer quests is hard >.<

Aside from not very responsive controls (OMG MY SWORD IS STUCK AND I CAN'T MOVE AND THE WYVERNS ARE COMING FOR ME *DEAD*) with a rather steep learning curve, and the camera system from hell (OMG I GOT KNOCKED INTO A WALL AND THE CAMERA IS IS AUTOMATICALLY POINTED AWAY FROM THE MONSTERS *DEAD* NO LOCK-ON! *DEAD*) this is actually a great, deep game that has captivated me for hours and hours.

I used to have problems similar to Inhert's since I didn't know there were tutorial quests. I died over and over again and I was just about ready to give up and place the game on the shelf for good. Luckily, I saw it's potential and didn't give up. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd should be out in Japan this month and I'm just hoping they've implented a lock-on system this time around...

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

I dunno, this is a beautiful game and all, but I once I experienced my first wyvern mission (or whatever the first dragon mission is), I got really turned off.

I mean, you pretty much have to dedicate time to gathering enough spider webs and other crap in other missions, then get back to base and create nets and traps and flash bombs and whatever, THEN you'll have an inkling of a chance to kill a monster after about 30 minutes of fighting.

For one mission. That's a hell of a lot of work, especially since this game doesn't have an end (or storyline).

Yea, it was annoying for me the first part...the first time i did it i though i didnt hit him hard enough so i've been searching him everywhere and then when i go to 5 he was asleep for the last 5 mins...so i had 2 fight him more...

The first Lao-Shang versus wasnt tat fun because i didnt know how 2 kill him...

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
