As long as it's definetely fixable by firmware, then I'm okay with it, but the PA guys have doubts over that, so it has me a bit worried.

It starts.

our People Shot While Waiting for PlayStation Console, Including 27 NEWSFIRST Reporter

Elizabeth Dorsett

Police are investigating a drive-by shooting involving people waiting in line for a video game.

Dozens of people camped out in front the Best Buy store on Nicholasville Road. They're hoping to get their hands on a Sony PlayStation 3 console. But the wait turned serious when someone drove by and fired shots at people waiting in line.

Four people were hit by the BB pellets, including 27 NEWSFIRST reporter Elizabeth Dorsett. She was interviewing someone in line at the time. None of them were seriously hurt.

Police came to the store to investigate. They're still looking for a suspect.
Lexington Police say they'll stay at the Best Buy to make sure people in line stay safe.

The PlayStation 3 goes on sale Friday morning at eight. The consoles are selling for more than $600 a piece.
I know there's going to be tons of crazy reports and videos coming within the next couple of days, but things like this aren't worth laughing about.

Playstation 3: I'll gun yo ass down, sucka!

EDIT: By the way, I have to hit the hay soon and then go to work, but if someone could take a look at my HDTV's manual and confirm whether I'll be suffering this downgrade thing going on with the PS3, I'd really appreciate it.

I swear this is the best time of the holidays, reading and watching all these crazies line up, riot, and pay stupid amounts of money for the big item this year (it was today that I learned that similar madness is occuring for a "Tickle-me Elmo XTREME". Come on now).

My job was well aware of this insanity as well. The "Boss" I mentioned previously caught on that I'd be picking up a system tommorow, and asked if I'd be skipping work. I tried to hold my ground and say that I wouldn't, but get this; she also egged me on.

So, I'm off tommorow. I told them the reason was that I had to take my mom's brother's cousin's dog to the vet ("what's the dog's name?" ".....Sony."), which of course no one believed, but I wanted that to stay on record. It sure is a fun job; she reminicsed about previous systems like the PS2 and SNES (she said she found the SNES educational in developing her little boy's coordination skills, the game in question being Donkey Kong Country), but she isn't willing to shell out the amount for a PS3.

One day left, and you bet I'm excited. However, this news of the downscaling in HDTV's really rubs me the wrong way. If I knew about this sooner, I'd probably put off buying a PS3 at launch and settle for the Wii first. No bones about it, this is Sony's biggest screwup, and they better make sure to fix it with an update (and that's if it's even possible to fix via update) STAT.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Maybe not. According to Gamespot, Sony will ship 100k consoles every week after NA launch. Take that with a grain of salt, but who knows.

Getting mine in 8 hours, hopefully. Wish me luck that I A) don't get mugged, B) lose my reserve because someone robbed the store, or C) get a defective system. And also D) Sony updates that HDTV downscaling crap.

Good luck to anyone camping out under the harsh conditions. I wish you well.

Sony is Doomed.:

Just look at this line. I had no chance.:

The store was completely cleaned out. Damn gangstas. Why u trippin' on mah grille:

Spoiler:
But anyway, I'm quite ecstatic, especially since I didn't have to camp out or do anything too extreme. I'm truly thankful for having the rare oppurtunity of being one of the few first NA owners, and I'll treasure this system from here on. To those of you who managed to snag one as well, congrats and I hope you have fun.

Grats on being the second NA owner on GFF (that's posted, anyway).

Right now the system is downloading the update file. I'm just glad that it works (I had some trouble figuring out how to turn it on; I found the little button, and it lit up before my finger even touched it. neat). 28% right now.

Just finished setting up my Playstation Store account. Took a long while inputting all my information without a usb keyboard (which I could hook up, but I didn't want to spend too much time figuring out how to install new accessories). Setting up my IP address was ridiculously easy though.

I couldn't resist, so I'm downloading the Motorstorm demo right now. 7% done.

Quote:
Any FF or MGS fanboy who pays 600 bucks now, for the first (apparently flawed) edition of the console and then waits a year or so for the titles he's made this purchase for ... I don't know, I think that's pretty detached to say the least.
This common reasoning is based on the notion that the launch systems are flawed. I'm not denying it's a possibility (although things are working fine right now), but assuming it runs flawlessly, I don't see what the problem is in buying a pricey system now versus one you'll buy later on anyway. I personally wanted to see what Sony had in store for PS3, even if it was just a fraction of what the system had to offer. Just messing around with the extra features (Blu Ray, Online games, etc) was enough incentive for me while waiting for the "real" PS3 games to arrive.

Speaking of which, I believe the games will follow the same pattern that the PS2 did, with the first stellar titles hitting around March (Motorstorm), to the really good games hitting summer (DMC4, White Knight Story), and then the first true next gen game around fall or winter (MGS4).

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?

Also, I can't wait to see what comes out of the "Other OS Install" feature. QJ.net has a link to a downloadable DVD of Linux, but they mentioned to be cautious with the download. I'll wait until some brave soul gives it a try before I start downloading things into my new system.

It's supposed to be like that, based on what I read. That's just the heat blowing out of the top vent. This is to prevent overheating, apparently.

Motorstorm is at 32% right now. I should've done this download during lunch or something. I have no interest in purchasing either of the online games right now, unless impressions are favorable.

For the record, if I couldn't reserve this system ahead of time like I did, I absolutely would never camp out like these other people. If you have the time and dedication to do something like that (even if your chances are still slim), then I admire your strong will as much I am certain that I don't have it.

I won't lie; a part of me feels pretty proud and smug that I managed to nab a system without putting up with what most of the other people are going through, and I also feel pretty smug being one of an extremely few who owns the system now (I feel like Marty when he went to the future to nab that sports almanac and took it back to the past).

But I do feel bad for the people who just wanted to buy this system to actually keep and play it. I feel bad for the GS employee who sold me the system today, mentioning how he was pissed that his reserve was canceled. I'm truly grateful that the simplest option worked out for me, and grateful to my sister for reserving it for me while I was at work.

57%. If there isn't an option to do other things on the PS3 while downloading, then I hope Sony updates that soon.

Hopefully the reports of 100k units each week hold true. I remember reading a similar claim for the PS2, but I don't remember if they actually held that promise. I really want these poor bastards to be able to buy a system soon, if only so I'll have more competition online. I have a feeling I'll be lucky to find even 5 people to play with in Resistence. :/

The download finally finished, it's installing now. I'm pretty excited to try this out.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Yes. Also, between the update and Motorstorm demo, I'm already down to 14gb.

Gave Ricky Bobby a quick look, didn't see that Spiderman 3 trailer anywhere. Downloading a Lair video while I go eat. Resistence coming next.

Good question. I'll be sure to give Phantasy Star Universe a try later on.

And no, there isn't supposed to be any upscaling or any other enhancements for PS2 games, at least that's what I read (haven't tried BC yet). An update is imminent, but the question is when.

soldier: how do you feel about the L2/R2 "trigger" button... not that I don't like trigger button, but those seem kind of weird to use, you kind of need to push hard on them...well I'll see when I'll play a game that use them often
I like them so far. They feel pretty comfortable and fun to click on, unlike the GC's shoulder buttons. I get what you're saying, as I felt a little ackward ducking in Resistence, but you don't have to push the button down all the way; just a slight click will do the job.

I'll have impressions on Resistence later on too. The online mode is pretty fun.

As for the memory card slot, Gamestop didn't have the adaptor. They said they should receive it around next week. Surprisingly the only PS3 accesories they had were extra controllers.

As for FFXI and the HDD, I have a USB adaptor for HD's that I use for my PC, so I'm going to hook that up later to see if it works on PS3.

EDIT: I inserted a couple of PS2 games, but they wouldn't appear in the menu. It turns out I had to manually restart the system, which would then boot up the PS2 game.

Hoo boy, FFXII got hit with an ugly stick. There's some serious compression issues with the FMV and actual game. Looks like the PS3 has some major updating to do. I'll try a few more games, but I'm not about to sell my PS2 just yet.

Double Post:
On the upside, Shadow of the Colossus seems to have improved a little. I replayed it recently, so I can tell that the textures are a bit cleaner, a few less jaggies. I'll take requests on what games you'd like me to try out later in my journal.

Have you set up a static IP address with the PS3? I think that might help things.

I think I've seen enough of the system now, so expect some journal impressions soon.

You call that trolling?

Quote:
editk when I plug my psp with an usb cable to my ps3, the ps3 detect everything (video, music, photo, etc) but when i put the memory stick directly into the ps3, it detect nothing... is it because when I put it directly into the ps3, it act more like a "external drive" and can detect the folder that are within it?
Wait, the PS3 recognized your PSP? I tried hooking mine up but didn't get any indication that it worked.

As for a static IP, open up your command prompt (type cmd in the "Run" option), then type ipconfig/all. Then just copy the info you see there to the internet settings in the PS3.

No, because that's against the rules. I call it commenting on the sad, pitiful nature of the current topic of conversation.
It's not my fault that only a couple of people managed to snag the system. I'm posting with updated impressions because I assumed the people who missed out wanted to hear about them, but if you're saying that isn't the case, I'll stop. I know the back and forth with just 2 members is pretty stupid, but there's nothing I can really do about that.

I waited 30 minutes to try out the new PS3 demo kiosk. I decided to play Motor Storm. I came.
I'm a bit perplexed by all the Motorstorm love, because I found the online demo slightly underwhelming. The thing even glitched up embarrasingly when I tried to turn motion sensitivity On during the bike races.

Gotta pay a bit more attention there next time, son.
Of course he couldn't just offer his own solution, then. The IP Address was just a guess, but I suppose what Inhert's really suffering from is bandwith problems. In which case I'm not sure how to fix that.

The GC shoulder buttons always felt a bit hard to me. It wasn't too bad when you're just clicking them, but they were an absolute pain when I had to hold down L1 to read text in Metroid Prime. Left my finger nice and sore after a while. The PS3 triggers only feel a little ackward because your finger extends a bit further down, but at least it's soft on the skin.

I tried hooking my PSP up while using it in USB mode, but I couldn't get anything out of it. Inhert says otherwise though. I'm a bit busy cleaning up my room to mess around with the system some more at the moment.

Finally back up. I read on another forum that to fix the problem with FFXII, you have to set your resolution to 420p. I haven't actually tried this, but it makes sense.

Resistence in single player is good fun, but so far nothing that the PS2 couldn't really handle. Online Mode, however, is the real meat and potatoes of this game. It's chaotic, clever, and it has yet to lag for me.

Other than that, I haven't used the system much since yesterday, and instead have spent most of the day moping. I've been tempted to sell my PS3 on Ebay, not out of greedy profit like everyone else, but because I wanted to use the money to buy this very pricey but very sexy TV.

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN-S40...productDetails

But after a lot of thought, I've decided not to worry about things too much and enjoy the system I have now. Yes it sucks that I have to play Resistence in 420p and not 1080i (what I wouldn't give for an update announcement) and I also hate the grayish blurs I occasionally see, but I've decided to stop letting that stuff eat away at me. The blurs may go away all on their own, and a firmware update should come eventually.

That said, I DO have the system up on Ebay, but only to see how much I can get from it. I'll only go through with the sale if the bid goes above $1,000, but I'll cancel it if I don't see the price improve in the last hour or so.

Also, there's a youtube video showing a possible NES Emulator in action.

Haven't experienced that, but I'm using audio thru either HDMI or Optical.

That said, I did run into one problem; when setting my audio to Optical, I got no sound off of Resistence. When I set it to HDMI though, I got sound off of my Home Theater, which is a bit odd. Also, the sound isn't quite as booming as it usually is for my Home Theater. I wonder what the deal is, or if this is yet another thing to fix in an update?

Another thing that's been bugging me is the supersmall text in the Internet Browser. I also don't know how to set it to Fullscreen. Tips on how to achieve either would be nice.

Also, I'd like to test the BC some more. I'm going to try God of War first, as I have a theory that PS2 games with progressive scan will receive a slight boost on the machine (as SotC did), but I'm open to suggestions on what other games you'd like me to check out for you.

What, you don't want my bikini-clad body?
