Metal Gear Online Discussion

Because this is the next best online game I've discovered for PS2 since FFXI, I feel the online portion of the Subsistence collection deserves its own thread. Post your username, Rank, notable accomplishments (kill counts, headshots, etc), any useful info you discover, etc.

I also hope we can arrange some GFF-exclusive matches later on. Post what kind of matchups you'd like, along with the rules, and maybe I'll personally try and host it (someone with large bandwith would be better though).

Name: SNATCHER

Rank: None (was formally PIG, but I fortunately lost that rating. PIG and TAR are the two ranks you don't want).

I'll post my stats later once I have access, but I don't really have anything to brag about.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

It's both. Also, I'm pretty surprised how very few members own the Network Adaptor. Granted, there weren't that many PS2 games that supported it, but I figured FFXI, SOCOM 1-3, and Madden alone would be enough for some people.

How ya doing, buddy?

I dunno, I think it's fine to post any comments and discussion in this thread. It makes it easier to find info on the game.

I'm having trouble finding a game that isn't full of lag. Too many times I've been unfairly killed by characters zooming in and out of the field. I'm shooting a guy in first person from a mile away, and he's instantly in front of me. Do I blame my connection? His connection? The host's? Or are there actually cheaters out there? Is it because I join a cramped server (Snake)? Or does Konami need to start releasing patches?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

And where can you find out if the server is capable or not? What numbers are good, and which ones can lead to lag?

Mobius, do you get an echo of your own voice too when using your headphone? Maybe that's why no one uses it.

It is true that a headset is pretty much unnecessary in this game. The preset commands do a good enough job, plus you can make like Snake and go solo on your own, and still get the jump on your enemy. Teamwork is still the best though.

Spatula, are you certain you can host all of us without any lag? If so, I'd like to join in.

As for the keyboard, I have a Logitech Keyboard Controller (used for FFXI), but I think it would be too cumbersome to switch from the PS2 pad to the keyboard, considering how frantic this game is.

I don't want to wait for MGS4 Online, I want either some patches, or an expansion pack. This game is too fun, and it can get even better.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

How about that. Here I thought you got the PIG rating if you got killed too many times. It doesn't look like deaths matter too much. If anything, team victories seem to be the key to a higher rank.

I thought I would at least get the F.S rank, considering how often I roll during matches.

I joined in one of Spatula's hosted games late last night. It didn't seem that he recognized me. We played for a bit in the canyon area (which I'm officially sick of since people keep picking it), but did pretty poorly. The other team strategized like crazy while everyone was avoiding Spatula's typed commands. All this whining about no one using headsets, and yet none of us used our own.

Also, I finally gave my old PS2 pad a try in place of my Logitech Wireless controller. As I guessed, the Logitech pad isn't very precise to use, as the firing button is far too sensitive, resulting in too many accidental shootings instead of cocking the weapon. Even though it's wired, I recommend sticking to the original pad for MGS play.

Strafing is the key when taking on someone who has a shotgun. Those things are deadly when they catch you, but can't hit for crap if you stick to the enemy's sides.

The real danger in this game are the snipers. I'm still trying to find a foolproof strategy for countering them, but it seems all you can do is catch them off guard.

It's also fun to kick those who TK on purpose.
What I can't stand is when someone shoots you on purpose JUST to get to Snake. I had Snake cornered and was pelting away at his life until some asshole started firing away with his shotgun, taking me out along with Snake.

They really should make whoever gets to be Snake next based on who does the most damage to him, not whoever lands the finishing blow.

Unfortunately I already had my MGO fix for the night before Spatula decided to host. The game I was playing was real intense too, a TDM where both sides were down to their last man. Too bad mine lost.

The indoor area (the one with the stairs) is my favorite area in the game. There's so many cool things to try and places to hide. Tossing a grenade the right way so it bounces down the stairs never gets old.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Now I just have to get into a game with you so you can record me as well. What do you use for recording PS2 videos anyway? That's one feature I'll be really looking forward to with PS3.

I have a mission in FFXI tonight, so I won't be on, but I should be able to get on tommorow, so long as it's at night.

Wow, you serious? I wonder if there are other secret modes.

When's Spatula going to host another game? I still need to take him on.

I'm going to join in right now. Whether as allies or enemies, expect to run into me (SNATCHER) soon enough.

I was speaking idiomatically.

Spatula wasn't on, but I did run into a Cornered Fox who recognized me from GFF. I don't know which member has that name, but we did have a bit of fun setting up a barricade against our enemies. One of our opponents took advantage of that dead body glitch though. I love this game, but it sure gets laggy.

Oh, cool. I'll make sure to add you to my friends list too. Also, the voice chat seemed to be turned off in that session.

I also joined a HEADSHOTS game, and just like you said, you had to kill your opponents via headshots. The penalty for not using headshots is self destruction (seriously, you blow up). It was a bit too hardcore for me, as I still need to work on my aim.

You mean you still don't know? CQC someone and find out.

Also, the books have no effect on him. Yeah....

Interesting tidbit about the knife. I've often tried to decide what the best course of action is after I CQC someone to the ground. Usually I can't switch back to my primary weapon fast enough, so the guy manages to get up and turn the tables. If a knife strike will take him down fastest, perhaps I'll switch to that.
