LCD's don't get magnetized, because they don't have anything to magnetize in the first place like CRTs.
Unfortunately, you're going to have to replace the screen. It looks like it got hit, or something, and damaged a bunch of cells. Given the age of the laptop (8MB of RAM?), you're probably best off replacing it instead of trying to repair it. Besides, judging from the error message on screen, the hard drive on it is broken anyways, so no big loss. ^^ Jam it back in, in the dark.  - won't you give me a smile...? -
