Windows XP does include a content based search, but its made infinitely more useful if you make sure the file extension filter is turned off.
Open up regedit and navigate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/ContentIndex. Find the key FilterFilesWithUnkownExtensions and make sure it is set to 1. Restart the Content Indexing Service and you will be able to search for text content in any file. Jam it back in, in the dark.
