Norton hardly runs quietly. For a virus scanner, it's a retarded system hog.
That said, thirded the whole Thunderbird suggestion, as it's pretty fucking spiffy and it's spam filter has never let me down. I don't think I've had a false positive with it yet.
Also, if you want to export your emails, the easiest way to do it is to use a CSV (comma seperated values) backup, that can be read by pretty much any client and I doubt Thunderbird would have trouble reading that.
The other backup options, maybe, but not that.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
