As you guys know, spam can be a bitch at work. And my inbox has been getting increasingly worse and worse these past few weeks.

So. I was wondering if theres actually a GOOD freeware form of removing this shit from my vision. I've tried a few programs and none of them made me too happy for their individual reasons.

I don't want to use it on the server - just my box. If you guys have suggestions for a server form, I'll hear you, but I would really rather not be responsible for everyone else whining about shit. I want to worry about my own box.

So yea. What do you guys suggest?

If you're able to use ThunderBird at work, then I'd recommend it. It's spam filter is pretty smart, and definately helps me alot.

I currently use Microsoft Office at work, but I use Thunderbird at home.

I don't really get too much spam at home and obviously, I don't use the capabilities of either softwares at home since I don't need to. But here at the office, I am sure you understand that I need to use features and shit often.

So, I guess my question is: does Thunderbird and Microsoft Office have comparable features?

Also, just how powerful is Thunderbird's spam filter? Because I get a SHITLOAD of spam. (100+ every morning with only 10 or so real emails.)

Personally, I pay for a provider with bullet-proof spam protection. In the average month, I might get as many as 20 or 30 spam emails delivered to my account. Of those, 80% are delivered to my "Junk Mail" folder, with very few false positives. I get, at most, 4 to 6 junk mail messages in my Inbox.

I've never known anything like this service. It's like rediscovering email for the first time. Whenever I talk about it, I sound like an advert for the company. I'm not in any way careful about who I give my email address to, or where I use it on the net. The server simply kills email from known spam sites silently, without it being delivered to my account. Suspected spam is tagged as such, and delivered to my Junk Mail folder, and mail from my contacts is whitelisted so that it is never flagged as junk.

For this service I pay 20 dollars a year. The site is http://www.fastmail.fm/ and they offer IMAP-4 and POP-3 interfaces to mail accounts, which means they will be compatible with whatever software you prefer to use. Since you mentioned that you'd prefer freeware, I'm sure this probably isn't really of a great deal of use to you, but it is the ultimate protection from spam, as far as I know.

Well, technically, if I WANT to buy spam software, I CAN. It's on the company, you know?

But I would rather AVOID having to pay and install the software. I mean, I have these incredibly high expectations of things I pay for. It's silly, I know.

But worst comes to worst, I'll crack and buy it. ^_^

EDIT: After downloading Mozilla Firebird from Mozilla, may it be noted that there was a virus embedded in the file mapiattach.tmp. Or so Norton tells me. I tried to google it and it seems I am not alone in finding it in the installation.

Is there a better place for me to download an older version or something?

I've had a bunch of problems with Norton and overall I find it a crap anti-virus program. Some free alternatives are better at detection and resource management. (For example, AVG Free)

Anyways, I would recomend Thunderbird too. Turn off Norton's warnings and install it anyway. My brother uses it at work and he says it's neat.
Personally, I use fastmail.fm (sup Soluzar) and I've yet to receive spam~

I use AVG at home, duder. I'm not a big fan of it, though. Too...cumbersome. I like things to run quietly in the background and not fucking HASSLE me all the time.

Norton is just what the company decided to use. I dunno. I hate it too. But hey. Whatcha gonna do. Sometimes, we don't get control of things like we'd want. =D

(Incidentally, I installed and am running Thunderbird. I removed whatever crap was imbedded. Now, I can't have my old emails from Outlook imported into Thunderbird. ;_; Outlook is NOTORIOUS for having shit back-ups of emails, I guess.

I save ALL of mine. For, you know, record purposes. >_>

Norton hardly runs quietly. For a virus scanner, it's a retarded system hog.

That said, thirded the whole Thunderbird suggestion, as it's pretty fucking spiffy and it's spam filter has never let me down. I don't think I've had a false positive with it yet.

Also, if you want to export your emails, the easiest way to do it is to use a CSV (comma seperated values) backup, that can be read by pretty much any client and I doubt Thunderbird would have trouble reading that.

The other backup options, maybe, but not that.

I understand entirely. The service has, however, exceeded my wildest expectations.

I'd suggest that Norton is generating a false positive on this, personally. It would be hard to convince me that Mozilla sofware contains a virus. However, I'm going to keep an open mind, since I can't claim to know for sure that it does not.

Err, if you're running an Exchange server at work, you might want to look into installing the IMF v2 for Exchange. Though, if you're familiar with this kind of stuff, I'd advise you let a pro install it. I'm planning on getting it to run on our exchange server as well, so I'm not really sure if it's worth the effort.

How about Google Mail for Domains? Of all the free web mail services I've used, I've had the least amount of false positives and negatives with Gmail...
