While at home the other week I was looking at various pictures of the family hanging around the house and I noticed that as far back as preschool I actually had really dark circles under my eyes. So, for me, I'm quite sure it's not a problem stemming from lack of sleep.
I've been told by a doctor or two that it's caused by an allergic reaction in some people (which causes the capillaries underneath the eye to swell/burst giving the purplish color). Of course, they couldn't give me any advice on how to rid myself of them permanently, and they couldn't find anything I was allergic to which could be causing them, so whatever. =\ I've also heard putting cold packs over your eyes can help reduce their appearance since they are a sort of swelling in your face.
