Actually that checkmark goes to the first new post in that thread since the last time you were online. It certainly does not show what threads you have posted in.

The ignorance in this thread is giving me a headache. The checkmark has nothing to do with subscriptions. Nothing. At all.

Holy shit, two freaking checkmarks. In any case, the one on the LEFT takes you to the last NEW post since you visited. You definately don't need to be subscribed to the thread, or have even posted in it. There is an ARROW next to the name on the right, and that takes you to the last post of the thread.
Edit: This is what I'm talking about.  Although I guess it is more of a down arrow then a checkmark. Still looks like a checkmark to me though This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
