Can you ping major internet services, like Google, Microsoft, Kernel.org??

Try pinging through hostname first and if that fails (hostname resolution lookup fail) try this IP
209.85.135.147
That's the (a - I assume there are many) Google server.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Browser? BitTorrent client connections are IP based. So IP is working for you. I suspect that the hostname lookup fails. But I can't do any diagnosis with only this few bits of information from you.

This should NOT be a hardware problem. The router really doesn't care which program uses its services. That's totally transparent to the device.
