Major Networking Issue
 

I have no idea, but starting a couple days ago, after my brother installed these megaupload toolbars (I'm not sure if this even caused it) my internet will still let me download torrents in uTorrent, but not browse the internet.

What happens is that my computer is hooked up wirelessly through the linksys WRT54G router. For some reason it also affects another computer that is hardwired through the modem as well. I've tried resetting my router (setting back to factory defaults) and obviously just unplugging the power and things like that.

I have no idea what to do. I'm almost about to go buy a new router. I'm not sure if has to do with certain ports, but my internet setup has been working fine for about a month or so (just got a new ISP).

Can you ping major internet services, like Google, Microsoft, Kernel.org??

That's the (a - I assume there are many) Google server.

Nope, I can't get anything. What will happen is my torrents will still run in uTorrent but I can't get any site, Google, myspace, gmail... anything.

I'll try the IP when I get home tonight. I really dont want to have to buy a new router... I've never had a problem like this before.

Try turning off your router for 10 minutes and turning it back on. Sometimes it works for me!

Browser? BitTorrent client connections are IP based. So IP is working for you. I suspect that the hostname lookup fails. But I can't do any diagnosis with only this few bits of information from you.

This should NOT be a hardware problem. The router really doesn't care which program uses its services. That's totally transparent to the device.

A similar thing happened to a friend of mine. The problem was solved by uninstalling his network adapter in Device Manager and then restarting. Can't guarantee that it'll work for you, but it's worth a shot.

I've tried to set up a static IP through my router and internet settings, it seems to be working well. However, my port forwarding seems to not be.

Long time ago, I had a similar problem. I could browse internet and do torrents, and then suddenly I can't browse internet anymore. But I think utorrent still ran. Also, my cousin on wireless had total access to internet.

Eventually I found the problem was the fucking ZoneAlarm firewall software. So I uninstalled it. Does one really need firewall software?

I'm betting you still have the DNS for your old ISP configured in the router.

I had the same problem and, it was the firewall, but it was windows, and I changed to zonealarm and it worked plus you don't get the crazy fluctuations in torrent download speed.

stupid windows firewall, make up your mind! block the torrent? don't block the torrent? I'll just uninstall you so you don't explode.

I second the postulation that DNS could be messed up. reset router to factory defaults, and start over. restart computer, too, since I don't want to take the time to list all the ipconfig/ flushdns stuff.
