Yes, it's possible through ACPI. Mostly you can configure this in your BIOS. And it is 'software' because of the way ACPI works (something like a VM).
I can for example boot up my laptop at a specific time. Check out if your BIOS exports this feature. If you're lucky it does. If you're using a linux kernel you can try writing a alarm time into /proc/acpi : sometimes this works and the data is injected into the ACPI system, so you get a system power up on alarm. EDIT: Another cool tool for automatic power up: http://sourceforge.net/projects/nvram-wakeup/ Jam it back in, in the dark.
