Bad news sells. That's the bottom line.
Whether it be nuclear war, nuclear holocaust, mad cow, DDT, SARS, Avian Flu, ozone layers, etc, it will be beaten to death with a stick. Bad news turns heads, and that's what the media wants.
Folks love the idea that they are living in the "end of times" and have always romanticized about it since times immemorial. The fear of nuclear winter in the Cold War is a prime example. Folks panicked and panicked to the point where the fear decided to steer society.
Just because we're in a modern age doesn't mean we're devoid of propaganda -- bear that in mind.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
