Good God do I hate Doomsday Scenarios

It's happening time and time again lately.

Every piece of bad news that affects a super-wide variety of people (like the US, Global economy, or the world even) many report the bad news and the oncoming downturn of the economy/the status of the world or some such.

Take for example the rising gas prices coupled with the fall of the dollar. Many news outlets are talking about this, but not a damn word on what to do about it. Many news articles on Global warming don't even mention a simple "do your part to slow it down, don't waste resources, etc." most of the time!

I find the bigger threat not of the bad news but the effect it will have on the populace as a whole. FOR THE LOVE OF CHAOS, IF YOU'RE GOING TO PREDICT DOOMSDAY SCENARIOS, DON'T SIT ON YOUR ASSES AND TELL THE WORLD WE'RE ALL DOOMED, LET US FUCKING DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

K thanx.

Midna Nov 10, 2007 10:35 AM

I personally like doomsday scenarios because it gives me good reason to go screaming down the street in a panic.

What incentive would the media outlets have for people to stay tuned then?

What I meant was don't just broadcast the bad news, tell us what we need to circumvent/prevent/soften the blow.

Hey Midna you don't nescessarily need a doomsday scenario to go screaming up and down the street in a panic. Plenty of people do that all the time when they're in a slightly intoxicated or drug induced state.

Bad news will always sell on TV. More often than not when I watch the news the top story is always bad news in one way or another.

In terms if a doomsday scenario ever existed your better off using your own common sense to try to prepare yourself instead of waiting for the media to tell you what to do.

I personally welcome doomsday scenarios; whatever makes life a bit more challenging.

Well geez, don't wait for nature to do that for you. If life's too easy try quitting your job, take out a third mortgage on your home, max out your credit and then default on all of it. Because, you know, then life would be more challenging.

Are you saying, like, you welcome nuclear war, the great depression part two, how about a complete loss of personal freedom as society regresses back to feudal serfdom? That'd be a real hoot right?

Yeah, I think so too. That's a great way to bait viewers to tune in later on.

"Next week on Channel 7! World War 3 is just around the corner, learn what you need in your fallout shelter!"

When you report on wide trends, sweeping generalizations are bound to be made in order to induce more fear in viewers. That's what sells. Local news media is especially guilty of this needless fear-mongering. I usually ignore such news outlets.

I find it so amusing that the first people to fall for the whole "global" bit is teens (Im in my 30s). The same happened when PhD's starting hyping up Y2K as the end of the world bug. Nothing happened.

Same thing with Global this..global that. Nothing but media scare tactics designed to increase viewer ratings and..wait for it...MONEY (i.e. ad revenue).

Back in the 1890s, tree huggers kept saying that by the year 2000..the world would be engulfed in 5 ft of horse manure from all the buggies.

Much ado about nothing.

The ancient space gods will take over the earth when they wake up from their deep slumber.

That's why we need to collected them POKEYMANS!

Sin Ansem Nov 10, 2007 03:11 PM

I should've known.

I figured Global Warming was kind of a natural trend and likely Isn't Our Fault, but isn't fearmongering the REAL reason why our economy screws up? The stock market dips because of things like that. If the media wants to fearmonger, shouldn't they do something that WON'T screw them over in the long run?

...bleh.

Nehmi Nov 10, 2007 03:21 PM

Good luck trying to avert doomsday. Maybe we'll get lucky and actually do something before its too late. I doubt that very much though... unfortunately most people would rather live in a fantasy world.

Of course that won't last forever. Everyone wakes up when they're beaten in the face by the truth.

Gechmir Nov 10, 2007 03:27 PM

Bad news sells. That's the bottom line.

Whether it be nuclear war, nuclear holocaust, mad cow, DDT, SARS, Avian Flu, ozone layers, etc, it will be beaten to death with a stick. Bad news turns heads, and that's what the media wants.

Folks love the idea that they are living in the "end of times" and have always romanticized about it since times immemorial. The fear of nuclear winter in the Cold War is a prime example. Folks panicked and panicked to the point where the fear decided to steer society.

Just because we're in a modern age doesn't mean we're devoid of propaganda -- bear that in mind.

Look at that, all because S-Man spilled a glass of milk on his fucking carpet. What a douche.

Thanatos Nov 10, 2007 10:25 PM

It's lies I tell you, LIES!!! We are alive, aren't we? There's no doomsday scenario.

Not much can be done on either. Just sit back and enjoy the apocalypse. It's only the end of the world.

Yeehaw!!!

Ozma Nov 12, 2007 06:59 AM

Rather than anticipating doomsday, why don't we fasten it?

Let's destroy the world!!! :D

LordsSword Nov 12, 2007 11:07 AM

I'm cool with doomsday.
First it reinforces my biblical perspective.
Second the sheer rush of just thinking about it fuels my ambitions. I am full of zeal in everything I do.

Doomsday is the new black in fashion, everybody wants to wear their own shade without it things would be so bland.
