Yes, it's required for federal aid and if you want to get a government job. Not to mention it's the law. I never gave it much thought, since the draft isn't in effect, and there would be a huge public outcry if they ever tried to reinstate it.
It is blatantly sexist, since women don't have to register. If I have to serve for my country, they should have to as well. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
As for penalties, I don't know. Every job I've applied for has a box that asks if I've registered for Selective Service, but I'm not sure how often employers check that. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I just thank God that all I have to do is register for the draft. The possible alternative is mandatory military service for a few years after graduation, like some countries have, and that's not something I'd want.
This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
