I downloaded Civ IV after reading through this thread and just launched into it without doing the tutorial. Luckily it's not so different from Civ 1 (The last one I played) and the automation of worker units and such helps a lot.

Next time you play one of these games, add me to the list, I shoudl have got the hang of it enough by then to not do too much damage in ten turns...

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Shin: If you're interested in joining up, I can always put you on the reserves for this one. We've already had a couple people have to drop in and out. If not, I'll put you onto a future game.
Cheers but I think I'll just watch this one. I've never actually been any good at these games so jumping in at Noble level might not be a brilliant idea. In my own game on Chieftan I've got to the point where the map's all been discovered and although I've got like destroyers and bombers and everyone else has macemen, I just find myself randomly building improvements to my existing cities and upgrading my defensive units all the time. Playing for a Spaceship win is always my favoured method over anything more aggressive.

But I digress, I'll keep watching this one and then play next time.

I suppose, thinking about it, this format could easily enough be transferred to other turn based games. Anyone here still play Master of Orion 2?

There's nowhere I can't reach.

They did a pretty solid job on some grenadiers I had but were ultimately defeated by my knights, ironically. I thought I'd use up all my obsolete military units capturing a city that was encroaching on my borders and barely managed it. I'll probably build up a big strike force then go kill the Chinese as they have their own continent. What year does the game run to anyway? I think I'm on about 1920 at the moment.

Heh, that's a pretty neat trick. I've found though that most of the other civs will just give me a load of gold per turn if I ask nicely. Even the Americans, owners of the city I captured, opened up their borders again about two turns after I offered them peace. Like I say, it's set to Chieftan so I think that makes everyone else like you. This first game is just to get the hang of how everything works, I'll go for something a bit more hardcore next time.

1936 already? I have to say though, you guys are doing pretty damn well so far. Then again, I do suck terribly at Civ. I shall demonstrate quite how badly when you finish this and start up another game!

I was speaking idiomatically.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you could jump in now if you wanted to, seeing that we are down to three players from the original five.
Nah, although I've been following your progress in-thread, without having actually loaded up any of the saves I think I'd be a bit lost this late in the game, plus I need to play a bit more Civ IV to really get the hang of it. I'm certainly in if you do this again though.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?

Could you not try to get someone to declare war on Khan to slow down his space programme?

What are the main differences with the expansions? I've got them but not got round to playing with them yet. I started a new game the other day although I fear I might have been a little optimistic on what my laptop can handle, opting for a huge map. It takes a good couple of minutes to process each turn, although the whole thing's been a bit shitty lately so that could just be a symptom of a wider problem.

Cool, I might have a game using one of those then.

Did anyone else here ever play any of the Masters of Orion games? I reckon one of those might work as a succession game.

MoO2 was the last one I played actually, although I did play it a shit load. Ha ha, I guess we could play a few Championship Manager seasons this way too, two weeks each or something although it'd be fairer to play one of the older versions before they introduced the transfer window so everyone would get to buy and sell players.
