Logically, given that the 3D games have been set in the same cities in the order they were in the first game, the new one will be set in London.

Add to that the many references to London in a lot of the spin-off sites and the fact that there's not much to take the piss out of in Japanese culture that Westerners would find funny and I'll be incredibly surprised if the new game is set in Japan.

I'd bet it will be late '60s London. London had a hell of a gang culture back then and there's plenty of films and what have you to draw inspiration from. Let's face it, GTA 3 was rather Godfather, VC was pure Miami Vice and SA was Boyz in the Hood etc. GTA 4 is far more likely to be Get Carter and the Italian Job than Crying Freeman.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Just because there's a lot of shit 3d medieval fighters about, doesn't mean they shouldn't have made Soul Calibur 3. I hardly think that setting the game in a comedy version of London will make the game in any way similar to the Getaway...

It will be someone completely new. There might be a few cameos from old characters but like Zip said, there's no reason for Tommy to give up being king Vice city. Rockstar are all about innovation so to reuse an old character would be a step backwards.

Thus speaks someone who never saw much Miami Vice and didn't twig why they called it Vice City.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Even if you base it on plot alone "criminal gets out of jail goes to Miami, and has nothing, but gets into the life of crime again and works his way up the ranks to become king of the city". And there are so many Scarface references in that game it's hard to even count. GTA3 even took things from Scarface.

I think the reason they chose the name "Vice City" has less to do to with that they wanted to name it after Miami Vice because it was similar, I think it has more to do with the fact that they wanted the game set in Miami(probably IMO because they used some ideas in GTA3 and wanted to make a Scarface-like game), but didn't want to call the game GTA Miami. So they had to find another name for Miami and if you think "Miami", nothing in paticular really comes to mind, but if you think of the word "Vice", you think "Miami Vice", hence why they called the game "Vice City", because people would quickly realize the game is set in Miami.
The suit with the rolled up sleeves costume is straight from Miami Vice, the black partner, at least half the cutscenes, the time frame, the fact that the tune "Crockett's theme" on the soundtrack (On Emotion) was from Miami Vice. Seriously, watch even one episode of Miami Vice and you'll see it. Sure there's some Scarface influences but only a few. There's influences in there from pretty much every Mafia film going.

Why do some people find it so hard to embrace new ideas? If they made a new GTA game using an old character or the "Son of an old character" it would be exactly the same as the old ones. If you wan't more mafia action, go buy Liberty City Stories.

Also, I'll be fucking surprised if the new game isn't set in the 60s or 70s. Rockstar are huge fans of obscure cultural references and cult tv and movie stuff and the wealth of source material is so much greater for a 60s or 70s game rather than a modern thing that would be nothing special or different from a bunch of other games.

Which again lends itself to London as there was a huge gangster scene in London in the 60s and 70s and a load of awesome films made on the subject, the Italian Job and Get Carter to name but two really obvious ones.

It's a nice idea but it would mean no more voice acting for the main character which I think would detract from the story rather. It'd sound a little odd if they had Dexter Fletcher provide the voice of the main character and you customised them to look like a fat, black woman...

I was speaking idiomatically.

I dunno about replay value. It takes long enough to get through the last couple of GTA games once, let alone finding all the hidden packages etc. I do have rather a short attention span compared to a lot of members here though.

Whilst online would be cool, I imagine it would be pretty unplayable. Look at the carnage one person can cause in the normal game when tooled up with machine guns and rocket launchers and so on. Now imagine if there were 20 people online at the same time with that kind of kit, it's be like playing with the riot cheat enabled, you'd struggle to last more than a few minutes probably and doing anything meaningful would be frustrating at best.

What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now?
