Grand Theft Auto IV

GTA4 was officially announced today. It will come out on October 16th, 2007 for PS3 AND Xbox 360 simultaneously. That is really the only thing announced about it though. :( Interestly enough, this is the first GTA to go back to the numbered system since, well.... GTA3. It makes be wonder if they are returning to an old city. Too bad that is the only info.

Grawl May 9, 2006 06:20 PM

As long as it's not that ganstah-thing from GTA: SA, I'll like it.

evergreen May 9, 2006 06:29 PM

I wonder if Tokyo was ever in their itinerary and if so, if it's still gonna go through with Yakuza coming out. I hope so, still good to see GTA's take on Japan.

Spatula May 9, 2006 06:51 PM

But then you really wouldn't have much of a diversity of the populace in Tokyo now, would you? But I would like to see a few of my favorite spots virtualized, ie Odaiba, Akihabara, Shinjuku and Ueno to name a few. Also, riding the subway system would be pretty neat.

evergreen May 9, 2006 06:57 PM

A subway shootout sounds promising. That's true, but with the new platforms, maybe you could fly to other places, with Tokyo being the forefront of the game.

Here Here!

I don't enjoy being with gangsters in real life and I certainly don't enjoy it anymore in a video game.

Tokyo's only worth it if you can enter maid cafes. You know you want too.

Spoiler:

Every GTA game was fun for me. San Andreas is obviously better for having more features and terms of graphics. I really dont mind the gangsta-slang talk at all though...-.-

Monkey King May 10, 2006 08:55 AM

I almost want to say that Rockstar is likely to keep the setting in an English-speaking country, but considering how much research they did for San Andreas, a Yakuza game isn't out of the question. It'd be pretty jarring initially, though; Japan doesn't look anything like not-New York or not-Los Angeles. High speed chases would be... interesting.

I like how Oct. 16 is the release date, even though PS3 won't be out til November.

vuigun May 10, 2006 09:53 AM

There were some X-Box 360 games that released early. On the PSP as well.

It could happen. The 360 is already functional so sales won't be completely dry.

GTA: Australia?

I'm pretty sure the world knows what happened here in Australia, Sydney. Some redneck Aussies attacked some Lebbo people.

And then there's Melbourne gangland wars.

Peeerfeect.

PS3 will be released in 2006. New GTA game in 2007.

Rockgamer May 10, 2006 02:28 PM

If it was coming out this year, they definitely would have released some details by now.

Anyway, I wouldn't mind it being set in Tokyo or some other foreign city. Not that there's anything wrong with American cities, but there are only so many types you can use before you have to start recycling them, and the past three games have already used the majority of them.

R* said it themself that they use numbers everytime they make something new, GTA3 was the real revolution the others were just add-ons. Expect something big from GTA4. like the wurld is yours.

Hey, that brings up a pretty good theory. What if you travel to completely different countries for like, drug deals or assassinations and stuff?

Wasn't GTA1 very similar to GTA2 though? And didn't GTA2 kind of suck? But you never know. I hope there is something new that is very revolutionary. I hope the new big thing isn't online though. I really have no interest in that.

Spatula May 11, 2006 10:55 PM

So I guess you'd need a zero wanted level if you want to take a plane from Liberty City to Los Santos. Heeeey....

Yes sir, everything looks perfect, here's your boarding pass, despite your six star wanted level and the tanks just right outside the airport terminal...

solid_snake May 11, 2006 11:04 PM

how about gta asia? or gta usa?

Spatula May 11, 2006 11:54 PM

Er, yes, which is what we were just discussing. Snake makes a cameo in GTA4. Hilarious. Must be a bitch to find him though with his urban camo.

Snake is in Gran Turismo 4? Oh shit son, I have to go get that game!

Spoiler:
Sorry about that SILBER-4, but I had to do it.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss May 12, 2006 03:01 AM

Logically, given that the 3D games have been set in the same cities in the order they were in the first game, the new one will be set in London.

Add to that the many references to London in a lot of the spin-off sites and the fact that there's not much to take the piss out of in Japanese culture that Westerners would find funny and I'll be incredibly surprised if the new game is set in Japan.

I'd bet it will be late '60s London. London had a hell of a gang culture back then and there's plenty of films and what have you to draw inspiration from. Let's face it, GTA 3 was rather Godfather, VC was pure Miami Vice and SA was Boyz in the Hood etc. GTA 4 is far more likely to be Get Carter and the Italian Job than Crying Freeman.

Rockgamer May 12, 2006 12:31 PM

I was thinking they might do London, but now that The Getaway has practically cornered the market on it I doubt they will now, especially since there is going to be a next-gen Getaway. Even though GTA most likely wouldn't be an exact recreation of London like in The Getaway, I still think they would rather try to go for something totally new now.

Yeah, he hides in a card board box and waits for the car to make a pit stop, then does CQC then starts racing. Ocelot come outs screaming with a BMW turned Shagohod 3.

But nobody cares about the Getaway. The games suck ass.
