I do reside in the south and for a while my father would not buy an air conditioner--but did own two computers--because he wanted to save energy but could not live without Morrowind or Neopets (very bad addiction). Luckily, we do have an air conditioner that works downstairs but not upstairs within my room.
I think a lot of people in the South learn to adapt to the heat. I know if the temperature is below 75°F here I end up freezing. There are many ways to remain cool such as fans, swimming, going to other air conditioned buildings, wearing less clothing (which can be very disturbing), etc. Granted, I do feel bad for those living closer to the equator who have to deal with the warmer weather, but they know how to adapt.

The state that I am currently residing does become very hot, but the humidity is not as bad as the humidity at the state that I attend college. It could become 100° F and I would be able to handle it here, but it could get 70° F at the college state and I would barely be able to stand it. It was that temperature once at my college and my whole body and pillow was literally covered in sweat.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
