Hmm, I'm not sure what my first is. First LAN game I played was Command and Conquer I think (either that or Skynet), and then I remember later doing modem-to-modem with Red Alert (not quite online, but same basic concept). I played Starcraft online at my school for a long time before I had internet at home, so that one I played for a while.
As far as best goes, once I got internet (dial-up, which I was on for another 2 years), one of the first games I played online (after having the game offline and just running around the levels alone) was the Natural Selection mod for Half-life. My god I sunk a lot of hours into that, never was I so drawn into a game. I think I literally played it for a year practically every day. Found a nice server that I got good pings to (good being under 200 on dialup), made it my "home", got to know all the regulars...those were the good old days. It was nice being able to always have an online game to play and fall back on. I should play that again...although the community is pretty small now and Combat kinda overshadowed the "real" mode in the game.
Jam it back in, in the dark.
