Best/First Online Game you ever played.

I'd like to know what games you guys started out with, and which one was the best experiance for you. Today I can't even count how many multiplayer games are out there. For the past three years I've spent the majority of my time playing games online. But lately I've been trying to reintigrate my roots by playing regular RPGs.

So what was the game that introduced you to playing online? And which one, of all the ones you've played, did you enjoy the most and why?

My first online game was Unreal for PC. Back then I still had dial-up so I laged like hell, but it was still alot of fun. The best online experiance, thats a tough one but I'm going to have to say Final Fantasy XI. Although I absolutely hate that game now, I spent a good two straight years playing it. For me, it was supposed to be the new PSO but it turned out to be quite different. Different in a good way because it had so much more depth to it. I'll never forget reaching 75 on my first job, getting rank 10 x2, sky access, sea access, and beating Chains of Promathia.

My latest online game is World of Warcraft, but my account is currently unactive. The game is really fun but the people on here are so apathetic. Most of the time I felt like I was playing the game alone.

Well, the first online game through internet was... umm, not sure, but it was Diablo I (on the "brand new" battle.net in those years) or Quake 1, but before that i play Doom II with some friends via modem calls... yeah, 11? 12 years ago? i was about 13 years old... damn.

Mine was ragnarok, i started to play ragnarok around 2001 on our official server (philippine ragnarok online) til march of 2004, after that i decided to stick to private servers which were fun too, after that i did a year hiatus again from december of 04, i stopped playing and like started around december of 05 and now i still continue to play.

Mine was Dark Ages, an old 2D MMORPG what was hard as hell to progress in. Dieing = losing ALL magical items. I spent so much money on staves and elemental belts it was rediculous.

Still a fun game though, played it for a good two years.

First started with Ragnarok Online as well and quit after about a year or so. Too much grinding and for no real purpose. :/ Although after a long break, I eventually got back in to it. Sigh.

Diablo II came shortly thereafter (the first break in RO). My roommate wanted me to play with him over the LAN so that's what we did, and we also played online. Lots of fun to be had, moreso because we could just yell at each from across the hallway and essentially, we weren't playing online by ourselves, per se`. But that, too, came to an end. Patch 1.10 fucked it up for me.

After that came another Blizzard favorite -- World of Warcraft. Played for a good year until I moved into a townhouse with two roommates. Internet was never stable enough for me to play, so I left it alone for about a year. Got back into it recently, although my time expired and I haven't renewed it yet. Can't really bring myself to.

As far as what the future holds, I'd really, really like for Phantasy Star Universe to turn out to be something spectacular. It looks great, I can always switch to offline play if I get bored online, and hopefully it'll be free. Can't decide if it's gonna be an Xbox 360 game or a PC game for me though. I'd like to try it out on the 360, but who knows.

I'd also like to try RF Online, but I'm just not willing to pay for it. Granted, it's only $20, but I don't think they're offering the first month free to play. I'll wait until they offer that before I buy it.

Believe it or not, my first was Midtown Maddness 2 - the old Microsoft game. Damn that was a while ago. That really got me into playing online, although the game I played the longest for was Warcraft 3. Midtown Maddness started it for me, but it never kept me coming back like War3 did. I've been playing War3 online since three months after it was released, and I still haven't stopped logging in every once in a while.

I can't even get that damn game to work :aargh: So i've been playing guild wars for sometime until it stopped working ><

Ah, mine was nox. I found it hilarious how you can kill yourself and others in less than two seconds, only to be ressurected to do so yet again. It was the only game to give me tears from laughing so hard while playing at the same time lol XD

I'm not sure if it was the first game I've played online, but certainly the one that got me "hooked" with online gaming is none other than StarCraft. I remember even using dial-up NetZero free internet to feed my addiction.

BlueMikey Aug 28, 2006 02:42 PM

I'm not sure which came first, but it was one of the following:

1) AOL's trivia games
2) something on The Sierra Network
3) Barren Realms Elite (dial-up BBS game)

I can't remember because this all occured something like 12-14 years ago. One of those.

MTGNecro Sep 2, 2006 09:26 PM

Starcraft. Saw my friend playing the Beta of it, and bought it once it actually hit shelves...BAM, so much fun. I still remember playing and making those MTG maps....then evolves....then missile turret defense....then sunken colony defense....*trails off*

My first online game was also Starcraft. I bought it when it first came out and I was addicted to it. I remember old school bunker wars where you had no masser so you had to move all units at once. I still play starcraft sometimes, so it's the first and best online game I've played.

acid Sep 4, 2006 02:26 PM

Command and Conquer.

Starcraft gets all the glory, but C&C kicks it's ass. GDI > Zerg.

Prinnydood Sep 4, 2006 02:30 PM

I guess the first online game I really got into was either Age of Empires or Diablo II....great games...great times hehe

avanent Sep 4, 2006 03:17 PM

My first online games was the demo for diablo 1, ha.

As far as bests go... I'll have to say FFXI also. Primarily for the fact that its held my interest for this long, and still does. Like all MMORPGs, it can get very repetative, but overall, I enjoy the world SE created for it.

Most of my online expierances consisted of Blizzard games, but on occasion a shooter can be a nice change of pace. After Warcraft III, I thought WoW was going to be the best online expierance to date. But it just couldn't hold any interest from me, I had expected far too much from Blizzard on that project. This was also back when Blizzard could do no wrong though, and back when Starcraft Ghost was still looking like a great game.

Only other current online game I currently play, besides FFXI, is Pangya :)

The no pay MMORPG Guild Wars tweeks my interest from time to time, but I haven't tried it as of yet. I've heard the quests and plot is laughable, which is a big con for me. However, the screenshots I've seen make the landscapes look beautiful, which is a big plus... so... Lineage II, although I know pretty much nothing about it, has some very attractive graphics as well... although I really haven't looked much into it.

Ah yes, I recall playing the original C&C over dial-up and even oldies like Terminal Velocity and Duke 3d to think of it.

I remember that clearly. I had cable internet for like a week when I told a friend "What should I try to play online?" he said Counter-Strike. Didn't really know much about the game at at the time. I was at a LAN party once where we played it for 15 minutes or so, and I seemed to enjoy it. I gave it a shot.

Man was I impressed when I started playing it again. Counter-Strike 3.0 the good old days. Oh yeah...not the shit it is today. I played that game for like 2 years.

I still play CS:Source every now and then with some buddies of mine, but it's nothing like how I was in the old days. The competitive part of me died a long time ago. I quite frankly suck at the game now. When I was in top form in the old days and I couldn't quite get into a game and sucked it pissed me off, I was too obsessed back then. Now I just laugh.

Gechmir Sep 10, 2006 05:45 PM

Diablo 1 followed by Ultima Online Beta.

God DAMN I feel old =( Those were awesome though <3

SouthJag Sep 10, 2006 06:09 PM

Why the beta version specifically, Gechmir? I've never played UO myself, but to see someone say "beta" like that seems sorta odd. Why would an incomplete version of the game be your favorite?

speculative Sep 10, 2006 06:17 PM

The first game I played online, that I can remember atm, was UT99. Good times! :D Unfortunately, that was back when I was on AOL because of their free CD's - I had just moved and didn't want to pay for Internet the first month. Trying to play UT through AOHell was annoying to say the least!

Kenichi Sep 10, 2006 06:18 PM

First online game was probably ARC back on Ten.net (anyone remember that site?).

However, my favorite online game of all time is PSO.

Solis Sep 10, 2006 06:49 PM

Hmm, I'm not sure what my first is. First LAN game I played was Command and Conquer I think (either that or Skynet), and then I remember later doing modem-to-modem with Red Alert (not quite online, but same basic concept). I played Starcraft online at my school for a long time before I had internet at home, so that one I played for a while.

As far as best goes, once I got internet (dial-up, which I was on for another 2 years), one of the first games I played online (after having the game offline and just running around the levels alone) was the Natural Selection mod for Half-life. My god I sunk a lot of hours into that, never was I so drawn into a game. I think I literally played it for a year practically every day. Found a nice server that I got good pings to (good being under 200 on dialup), made it my "home", got to know all the regulars...those were the good old days. It was nice being able to always have an online game to play and fall back on. I should play that again...although the community is pretty small now and Combat kinda overshadowed the "real" mode in the game.

Was moreso referring to my First ones. Since the title says Best/First.

Diablo 1 was just multiplayer. UO was a MMORPG. Naming my first of each bracket. I was in UO beta and it was my first MMO.

Plus, on a connected topic, UO underwent drastic changes after beta. It was much better originally but oh well.

Kimchi Sep 10, 2006 07:59 PM

Starcraft would be my very first online game. Yea I just had to follow along with my buddies since I didn't want to be left behind.

Best online game is pretty hard =X ATM I would have to say either R.O or CS:S or SC >.>

Domino Sep 21, 2006 10:15 AM

My first online game was Doom 2, I think. We set it up at college and sepnt half an hour on it. It was quite fun, couldn't aim or shoot anyone to save my life, but still fun.
My first LAN was at my old workplace, we used to play CounterStrike: Source, we managed to persuade the manager that it was good for teamwork, and he believed us :)
Other than those the only other online game that I have played is Battlefield 2, and I've only started out on that.
Yeah, I guess I'm new to the whole online gaming experience.
