If you request a name change, what happens to your previous one?

Situation: Tails is using the name YUKTOBANIA. Can somebody else register as Tails, or is it reserved/permanently taken?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I was thinking about temporarily changing my name, is all.

Chances are if I did somebody would deliberately reregister as Elixir just for the sake of doing so.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

It isn't that, it's just I don't want somebody registering it afterwards out of spite simply based on the fact that I've changed it. It was only going to be temporary, but with Sass around it wouldn't be a wise career move.
