Seeing as you've played through most of it and still have an avid interest in it, I'd say go ahead and finish FF8. Certainly at that point you've gone through the most-vilified parts without being turned off to it, and Disk 4, along with Disk 1, are FF8's highlights.
FF7's ending isn't the best part of that one, but certainly knowing it'll keep you from wondering how it wound up, whereas you seem sorta stuck of that point with FF8. Jam it back in, in the dark. DAMN good coffee!
