I just came across "Running Wild"...They have a zillion releases out and I've only heard their recent 2-disc comp (which has, like 1-2 tracks from each album), so I'm looking at them a bit more seriously. I love their general style (which is good, since so many of their tracks sound really similar) Any fans/haters/recommendations/something I might like 10 times more? (Helloween's about the only other experience I have with German Power Metal.) My favorite tracks from the comp were "Prowling Werewolf" and "Treasure Island".
Dear god my good sir. I don't know how anyone could mention "German Power Metal" without Blind Guardian coming up, possibly the most incredible metal (or indeed, any genre) band ever to grace this planet (in my most humble opinion.)

Get yourself some Guardian! Their first 3 albums are probably best classified as thrash slowly morphing into power (their third albums is REALLY weird to listen to), but by the 4th one, "Somewhere Far Beyond" they are entirely power metal.

I know I'm going to probably get some thrash fans riled up over that, but seriously...listen to the first three. Not really sure there is any closer term =/.

I love all their stuff, but there's no doubt that power is what they do best.

How ya doing, buddy?

SONATA ARCTICA! Yes. I'm not much of a concert goer, but the last one I did go to was Blind Guardian's Twist in the Myth tour in Chicago. Amazing concert. I'd like to make it for Sonata Arctica again but I don't know if that works out with school. Don't think it does, unfortunately .

Taking a break from power, I recently got into a band called Decapitated. Anybody else heard of them? They've got some very catchy riffs, for being death metal, which I like but usually doesn't stick in my head like they do.

Decapitated is pretty awesome. Which album did you get? Organic Hallucinations? I'm not too familiar with their new singer but it was quite jarring to me compared to their original which I felt was one of death metal's best. I really like Decpaitated's tight rhythm that almost has a militeristic feel to it, especially on the Negation.
Yeah, Organic Hallucinosis. I haven't heard any of their older stuff though, I should probably check it out, didn't know they had a new singer for this one.

I picked up several new albums the other day and a new one today.

Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time and Piece of Mind

Self explanitory here. These albums are certainly fantastic and I have no idea why I never bought these until now! Oh well it's worth the wait and I'm glad to have them. Now to pick up the rest of Maiden's discography.
Piece of Mind is probably the second best Iron Maiden album, with tracks like "The Trooper" and "Flight of Icarus" on it. My personal fav is Powerslave (definitely pick this one up). "Aces High" and "2 Minutes to Midnight" are on Powerslave, which are both excellent, and all the other tracks are very solid as well. "Duelists" although more unknown is another I really like to listen to.

Beware with their discography though - from 94-99 their lead singer left, and the quality really suffers. I can't stand most of their stuff from those years. He comes back though, for Brave New World, another IM album I love .

Any Judas Priest fans?
They're a hit & miss band for me. Most of the songs I like are from the early 80s, except Lochness from their latest album, which is probably my favorite Judas Priest song, ever.

But when I like their songs, I REALLY like them.

I don't limit my black metal choices just based on lyrical content. Having an entire genre of music being limited upon the lyrical content is just silly anyway. Music is defined by the sound, and when I can barely make out what the hell they are saying anyway, it makes little difference to me whether they are praising Satan or God.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Music is a path through which one can express oneself - not the sole means of. That being so, lyrical content is secondary to the sound. While idealogical may end up creating a genre, such as black metal, there's nothing ridiculous about someone else coming along and saying "hey, I like this sound" and using it for a complete different idea.

While I agree that there is probably a primary motive of "converting" listeners of black metal, I just don't get why people think it's a stupid idea. All they did was steal the sound and change the lyrics to promote a different idea. I don't see the sound of black metal and the lyrical content of black metal as being dependent on one another. Do they go well together? Yes. But I don't think it's any different, or any more dumb than Christian bands piggy-backing on top of other musical genres. Come to think of it, its not really any more or less stupid than the lyrical content of "true" black metal .

I don't really think Jesus would care, on principle, as long as it isn't changing your heart (as much as I hate to sound preachy/sappy/stupid, that's the best way I could think to put it). I listen to Tvangeste on a regular basis, but I don't find myself hating Christians or being any more angry than I normally am. If you let music shape your views and determine who you are, you are an idiot. Just enjoy music for music's sake. I don't normally even like to listen to most Christian music because it exists for the purpose of promoting a cause. It doesn't exist for music's sake, it exists for an ideology's sake. If it's musically sound - then sure, I'll listen. But more often then not when a band starts caring more about their message than they do about writing good music and having a good time, (at least from what I've seen) the quality of music starts sucking.

I like the Nightwish sound, but I don't see anything much original on the new album. Not necessarily a bad thing if you already like them though. They do some cool things, some unintentionally hilarious things (I Wish I Had An Angel, anyone?). I wouldn't put them up there with my greatest bands ever list, but I like 'em and listen to 'em.

I've recently gotten back into Tvangeste. Some of their songs are almost elegant. Definitely a VERY Russian feel to them, which I love.

Firestorm album is better than their first "Damnation of Regiomontum." That album had a lot of long, aimless songs, that while good, got a bit boring after awhile. Firestorm songs have direction and feel to them.

Ditto on that.

I like Nightwish in the same way I like other mediocre music. There's nothing that stands out about it or makes me want to run out and tell other people about them. I listen to it, but that's about it.

Well, except maybe "I Wish I Had An Angel." That song, and especially the music video, is just so hilarious I can't help but want to share it with others.

Well, popularity is relative. 10 years ago, few people really knew who Blind Guardian and Iced Earth were, but now a lot of kiddies worship them.
Wow! What a strange coincidence! Two bands that play exceptionally good, well-written, well-thought out music gained popularity over a period of 10 years, and are now...gasp...more popular!

Is it just me, or is it cool to like shitty bands/music that never go anywhere?

The discussion over the past few posts has been how you've been trying to rationalize your elitism.

Bands becoming popular is not an automatic ticket to suck-ism. And it's pathetic when you think you can't like a band because of that, and instead have to somehow make your taste in music rational. You've been trying to wrap it up in fuck knows what.

Taste in music isn't rational so I don't even see why you are doing what you are doing in the first place. Like what you like because you do, not because it's "cool."

Either way, fuck off.

Jam it back in, in the dark.

And as I said, it's a rationalization for her musical elitism.

She doesn't need to rationalize her taste in music. It's already pretty damn good, at least in most people's opinion, as far as I can see.

Bands become popular because they play exceptional music that appeals to a lot of people. In some cases, yes, that causes bands to stop trying and they just mass-produce repetitive shit. But I don't believe that's the norm. And I'm not saying every band that never becomes popular plays shitty music. They either make some bad decisions in terms of publicity, they don't play music that appeals to a broad audience, etc.

Good songwriting and talent gets you somewhere. While I despise all the "kiddie worshipers" as Morrigan very aptly defined it, I don't stop liking bands because their fans are a bunch of slovering morons. And that's all I'm really seeing here. Maybe it's not cool to like Blind Guardian anymore in the eyes of "true" metal fans, but I still don't give a fuck - they're my favorite band, and it's because I like them, not because of some cultural popular movement.

I'm tired of seeing people complain about band popularity, and it's even worse when they try to package it up as something else. Does anyone else think it's GOOD that metal is moving more 'mainstream' so to speak? That good bands are getting popular with people? That more people are listening to metal, driving up the demand for more bands, more stuff to hear?

I listen to stuff irregardless of how popular it is, and anyone who truly appreciates music should do the same. I don't agree with the standpoint that there's a oft-occurring correlation between a band getting popular and that band starting to suck. Or even "alienating older fans" if you want to try and pawn it off as that. BG changed their sound way before they got popular. Might it be that bands change sound simply because that's the direction they want to take? Maybe they get popular because they've changed sounds? A sort of "hey people seem to respond well to this, let's take this direction" sort of attitude?

Bands aren't always entirely about the money, but you don't keep doing something that doesn't feed you or maintain your equipment.

At any rate I'm going to take this discussion any further - it's just going to spiral downward into a morass of bickering shit and neither one of us are going to change our opinions, and as such, it's an utterly useless venture. Morrigan thinks I'm an ass, and she's probably right, I think she's an elitist who can't admit it, that's not going to change with another 10 pages worth of filth plugging up an otherwise perfectly good thread.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Ah, it all makes sense now. I lumped your favourite band among the "bands that are getting worse lately" category, so your vagina itches. Got it.
No, I just think you are an idiot.

You find them disappointing because they are becoming more popular, and have to hide that fact behind some pathetic facade. I called you out on it and you PMS'd all over the place.

That's all this is, and no amount of douching all over this forum is going to change my view on that.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Anybody heard of the Diablo Swing Orchestra? My best friend recently brought me some of their work, and I love it. It seems to be a very odd mix of Jazz & some of the "progressive"-labeled genres. Female main singer so Gothic metal if you want to make that general of an accusation. Anyway, my point is, pretty hard to peg them down.

^^Balrog Boogie, probably my favorite song off their new album.

I love me some tech death metal. Decapitated just came to my head.
Spheres of Madness, I think, is pretty much always going to be my favorite song. Ever.

I checked out Asmegin, never had heard of them before. A couple of the tracks I really enjoyed (the title track especially) but the rest didn't do much for me.
