VVVVVV for Vendetta
VVVVVV, the latest game by Terry Cavanagh (Don't Look Back, Judith, Pathways) was released yesterday. Check this shit out, yo.
It's an open world platformer: explore a dimension, find your crewmates, and don't run into the spikes that some fucker left lying around everywhere for no reason. The core mechanic is that you can't jump, but instead you can flip gravity back and forth so you start falling in the other direction. Not an original idea by a longshot, but it explores the heck out of it with a bunch of interesting and challenging room designs. http://thelettervsixtim.es/ The website has a demo available online (Flash) and for download for Mac/Windows (Flash packaged as an executable). The demo contains two of the game's eight areas, but it doesn't have the overworld. In the full version, you can play the areas in basically whatever order you want; there aren't any gates like ammo doors blocking portions of the map, but there are a few sequenced areas you don't have any control over. The full version is $15 (USD). If you're a filthy clockwatcher, I finished the main game to full completion in a shade under two hours, with about 550 deaths or so. There are a few bonus features, like time trials, but nothing really major. It was a pretty damn enjoyable two hours, though, with a lot of difficult challenges that never really get unfair (save for a few rooms, you'll know them when you see them). Just give the demo a shot, it won't take too much of your time. Here's what chat said about the demo last night:
Jam it back in, in the dark. |

A bunch of you already know this, but for those who don't: Terry released version 2.0 of VVVVVV with The Humble Indie Bundle #3 last week. It's a full rewrite of the game that now includes a level editor! The editor is kind of glitchy (I've had lines of scripts and warp tokens mysteriously eaten), and scripting and other functionality is a bit limited at the moment, but you can still do quite a bit with it. I've spent pretty much all my free time lately messing with it.
NO I'M NOT MAKING A LEVEL FULL OF DEATH TRAPS WHY DOES EVERYONE KEEP SAYING THAT IT'S LIKE I HAVE A REPUTATION FOR BEING A DICK So anyway, since it's going to take me like three months to finish this thing at the rate I'm going, by which time fifteen thousand people will have independently used all my level ideas, I'll have plenty of time to crank the two new music tracks SoulEye wrote. Oh yeah! That's right, I forgot to mention that in the opening paragraph! The game has two new themes that you can use in custom levels! Here are some quicko extractions I made with some random code I found on the internet. I didn't loop them because that would've taken a whole five seconds and do I look like I have that sort of time, I'm busy placing spikes here. Hopefully SoulEye will provide the extra tracks in GLORIOUS FLAC at some point in the future. WHAT'S MY NAME, BITCHES
Anyway I am here today to speak to you about SoulEye's new album, Adventure: http://www.souleye.se/adventure. It has some original pieces, a bunch of VVVVVV arrangements and other stuff he wrote for the rhythm game Pulsen, and some arrangements he provided for other folks's albums. Why am I bringing it up in this thread? Because it also has the VVVVVV 2.0 tracks, Pacing Energy and Piercing the Sky! ATTENTION COLONEL T. SKILLS MCINTERNET: TIME TO GET YOUR FLAC ON
